ROGERS TO SIT OUT 2010 SEASON BASEBALL MEN (2/5/2010) |
Riverside Community College District Athletic Director Barry Meier announced today that head baseball coach Dennis Rogers has taken a leave of absence as the Tigers' head baseball coach for the 2010 season. Meier said assistant Eddie Cornejo would serve as interim head coach for the upcoming season, which begins tomorrow when the Tigers host Compton College in a 1 p.m. game at the Evans Sports Complex.
Cornejo is a former Rogers' player, who played on the Tigers' 2000 and 2001 state championship teams. He later transferred to University of Oklahoma, where played for two years and received his degree before playing six years in the minors with the Oakland A's and the Colorado Rockies.

The Riverside Sport Hall of Fame's Class of 2010 was announced this morning and once again Riverside Community College will be well represented as current baseball coach Dennis Rogers, winner of four state championships, and former athletes Tony Adams, Bob Rule, Luann Ryon and Wayne Gross will be enshired on May 10 at the Riverside Convention Center.
Rogers, who is in his 21st year as the Tigers head baseball coach, 13th on the California community college baseball win list with a record of 632-282-4. Known as a developer of talent, Rogers has coached at the high school, college and professional levels.
Ryon went from a physical education class archer to an Olympic gold medalist in 1976, as well as a World Champion in 1977. In 1971 she enrolled in an archery class because the tennis class was full at RCC. The rest - as they say - is history.
Rule teamed with legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian to win two California championships and compile a record of 66-3 during his time as a Tiger. Rule earned the state tournament MVP award in 1965 and was called by Tarkanian as "the most dominant JC player in California history." After attending Colorado State, he went on to make his mark in the NBA, playing eight seasons. he concluded his NBA averaging 17.4 points and 8.3 rebounds.
The Riverside County Player of the Year in 1967, Adams played for the Tigers and eventually went on to Utah State and then to professional football. A 14th-round selection by the San Diego Chargers, Adams spurred the NFL and signed with Southern California Sun of the fledgling World Football League. He concluded his professional career by throwing for 3,905 yards and 23 touchdowns.

2010 Tiger Backer Golf Tournament
The Riverside Community College Tiger Backer Association is accepting player applications for the 2010 Tiger Backer Classic Golf Tournament, which benefits the District's 19 athletic programs. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, April 5 at Canyon Crest Country Club.
The tournament is limited to the first 175 entry fees. Fees cover green fee, lunch, dinner and awards. It is a four-man scramble.
