EL CAMINO ELIMINATES RIVERSIDE AS TIGERS ALLOW 5 UNEARNED RUNS AND LEAVE 15 RUNNERS ON BASE BASEBALL MEN (5/12/2012) |
GLENDORA Unable to overcome a 5-0 deficit, thanks to five unearned runs, coupled with leaving 15 Tiger runners on base, the visiting Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers saw their season come to an end Saturday afternoon with a 6-4 loss in a Southern California Super Regional Tournament elimination game at Citrus College.
No. 8-seed El Camino (30-10), originally the No. 9 seed, parlayed a pair of errors into three runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the third to post a 5-0 lead. RCC cut the deficit to 5-2 with two in the fifth and crept to within 6-4 in the eighth, but The Tigers left 15 runners on base, and would have left more (or scored more) if not for three double plays turned by the Warriors.
No. 7-seed Riverside (20-21), originally seeded number 10, was in it until the end. After a double play erased freshman 1B Daniel Arellano (Corona / Centennial HS), who had singled to open the top of the ninth, the Tigers were able to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate before a fielderrâs choice resulted in a force out at third to end the game.
A dribbler down the first-base line that RCC freshman starting LHP John Kappmeyer (Cathedral City / Cathedral City HS) threw into right field for an error, followed by a pair of singles gave ECC a 1-0. Freshman LF Daniel Timmerman (Torrance), the Warriorssâ No. 9 batter, socked a 3-2 pitch into the left-center field gap for two RBI and a 3-0 ECC lead.
In the third, with the bases loaded and two out, a routine groundball up the middle was muffed by freshman SS Jake Middleton and two runs scored on the error for a 5-0 Warrior advantage.
Undaunted, Riverside mounted a comeback to get back in the game when a pair of walks sandwiched around a fielding error loaded the bases with one out for the Tigers. A wild pitch allowed freshman LF Jackson Jones (Hemet / West Valley HS) to score RCCCâs first run After a base hit reloaded the sacks, Arellano lofted a sacrifice fly to right-center field. Freshman 3B Ricardo Rodriguez (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) raced home to make the score ECC 5, RCC 2.
In the top of the seventh, RCC sophomore CF Cade Gotta (Solana Beach / San Diego Christian HS) doubled to left-center field to open the frame. Running on a pitch to freshman RF Ryan Garvey (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS), Cotta, trying to make something happen, stole third as the pitched skipped past the ECC catcher for a would-be wild pitch. Never breaking stride, Gotta ran toward home, but was erased on a close play at the plate.
In the eighth, RCC loaded the bases on an infield single, a hit batter and a fielding error by an ECC relief pitcher. Another double play pushed across a run before Rodriguez singled up the middle to drive in a run, reducing the deficit to 6-4. In the ninth, Arellano led off with a single, but was erased on a double play. Again refusing to roll over, RCC put two runners aboard on a single and a walk, but a fielderrâs choice resulted in a force at third to end the game. ECC freshman starting RHP Rafael Ramirez (Torrance) went the first 7.0 innings (138 pitches, 77 strikes) and allowed seven hits, two runs (one earned) on six walks with five strikeouts to improve to 9-2. Sophomore RHP Alex Mistuloff (Redondo Beach), normally a starter, came on with two on and two out in the ninth and induced the game-ending groundball out to notch his first save in his first relief appearance of the season. Kappmeyer went the first 1-2/3 innings and allowed three hits, three runs (none earned) and saw his record dip to 2-6.
In later action on Saturday, host Rio Hondo topped Santa Ana, 5-1, in a winnerrâs bracket game, and later, Santa Ana defeated El Camino, 9-6, in another elimination game. On Sunday, May 13, undefeated host (in tournament action) Rio Hondo (36-3) will be the designated visiting team against once-beaten Santa Ana (33-8) at 11 a.m. Should Santa Ana defeat Rio Hondo, an âif necessaryyâ game will be played 30 minutes after Sundayyâs first game. -30-

East L.A. wasted no time getting back into the series in the first game on Sunday when sophomore 2B Ruben Ramirez (Northview HS) slugged the first pitch of the day over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season. The Huskies made it 2-0 in the sixth when freshman C Armando Lomeli (Temescal Canyon HS) singled to open the sixth inning, was sacrificed to second, went to third on a single and scored on a RCC infield error. After only getting nine hits in the first two games, RCC exploded for 13 safeties in the finale. Four Tigers had two hits apiece, led by sophomore C Jacob Rogers (Temecula / Chaparral HS), who broke the game open with a two-run double down the left-field line.

ESPINOSA HR IN SECOND GIVES RIVERSIDE 1-0 WIN OVER EAST L.A. BASEBALL MEN (5/5/2012) |
NORWALK Grady Espinosa picked a perfect time to sock his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the top of the second inning, and freshman starting RHP Blake Burrell made it stand as the visiting Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers, the No. 10 seed, shaded the No. 7-seeded East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Huskies, 1-0, in the first game of their best-of-three series Saturday afternoon at Kincaid Field on the campus of Cerritos College.
Espinosa, a sophomore LF from Yucaipa HS, deposited a 3-1 pitch to deep left field off ELAC sophomore starting LHP Juan Vera (John Glenn HS) for the only score of the game. Burrell (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) â the Tigersssâ No. 3 starting pitcher â looked like an ace as he went the distance and made it look easy. Burrell (115 pitches, 81 strikes) scattered seven hits (one double) with no walks and seven strikeouts. No ELAC base runner reached third base and only two reached second. Burrell improved to 6-0 on the season.
Except for the home run allowed, hard-luck loser Vera (6-4) was just as effective as he also went the distance (125 pitches, 79 strikes) and yielded only five hits (including a double) with one walk and one strike out. Freshman DH Ryan Garvey (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS), son of former Major League Baseball first baseman Steve Garvey, stroked a two-out double in the top of the first for Riverside (19-18). Missing a chance to become playoff eligible, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers saw a pair of infield errors lead to a pair of unearned runs as the visiting Saddleback College Gauchos played the role of spoiler (part one) with a 5-3 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) win Tuesday evening at the Evans Sports Complex.
Saddleback (14-19, 8-12 OEC) scored single runs in each of the first four innings and added an insurance run in the sixth to keep the Tigers at bay. TIGERS TOP NO. 1 ORANGE COAST, 4-3, IN 12 INNINGS BASEBALL MEN (4/20/2012) |
RIVERSIDE In a game which was scoreless for six innings, host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers came from behind to push across a pair of runs in the bottom of the 12th inning and shade the Orange Coast College (OCC) Pirates, 4-3, Friday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game at the Evans Sports Complex.
Riverside (17-17, 10-9 OEC), with the win over the number one-ranked team in the state, kept its playoff chances on the table. Freshman SS Kadyn Glass (Redlands / Redlands HS) dumped a single into short right field to open the bottom of the 12th. Sophomore CF Cade Gotta (Solana Beach / San Diego Christian HS) pushed a bunt single wide of first base to put Tigers on first and second. Sophomore 2B Elijah Briseno (Rancho Cucamonga / Rancho Cucamonga HS) got aboard on a sacrifice bunt when OCC sophomore 1B Eilert Meyers (Vista HS) elected to try for a force of Glass at third, but his throw was wide to load the bases. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, sophomore DH Brad Burcroff (Redlands / East Valley HS), who leads the Tigers with a .333 batting average, reached on a force out which plated Glass with the tying run. (The OCC second baseman waited for a convenient hop instead of charging the ground ball.) After Burcroff stole second base, freshman 1B Daniel Arellano (Corona / Centennial HS) laced a 1-2 pitch down the right-field line and Gotta scored the winning run. Arellano led the Tigers with three hits in six at-bats.
Orange Coast (29-4-1, 16-3 OEC), which broke a scoreless tie with a run in the seventh and tied the game with a run in the eighth, took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th. Freshman CF Boog Powell (Mission Viejo HS) rolled a two-out single to center field to get the Pirates going. Sophomore SS Joel Licon (Diamond Bar HS) followed with a single to left. Up stepped freshman RF Bijan Rademacher (Anaheim Hills HS) who sent a ground ball to short stop where Glass booted it for an error to allow Powell to score.
RCC freshman starting RHP Blake Burrell (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) went the first ten innings for the Tigers. During his time (130 pitches / 92 strikes) he allowed two runs (both earned) on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts but had to settle for the infamous no decision. Freshman RHP Joe Molina (Redlands / East Valley HS) pitched the last two innings and allowed just the one run (unearned) on two hits to get the win and improve to 1-2.
OCC freshman starting RHP Dallas Draviczki (Mission Viejo HS) went the first 4-1/3 innings to also leave with a no decision. Pirate ace, sophomore RHP Keegan Yuhl (San Diego), who came on in the 11th, was saddled with the loss and saw his record fall to 10-1.

IRVINE VALLEY PUSHES ACROSS TWO RUNS IN EIGHTH FOR 6-4 WIN AT RIVERSIDE BASEBALL MEN (4/17/2012) |
The visiting Irvine Valley College (IVC) Lasers pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning and came from behind to nudge past the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers, 6-4, Tuesday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game at the Evans Sports Complex.
Irvine Valley (13-19, 6-11 OEC) saw RCC build leads of 1-0, 3-2, and 4-2, through three innings before scoring single runs in the fourth and seventh to tie the game at 4-4. In the eighth, with two outs and no one on, the Lasers saw freshman 3B Tim Ralston (Villa Park HS) draw a walk. Sophomore 2B Scott Kaplan (Dana Hills HS) sent a pop fly into short left field which fell for a double and sent Ralston to third base. Sophomore CF Bryce Hara (Northwood HS) then sent a 0-1 pitch rolling just inside third base and down the left-field line for a two-run double and the 6-4 lead. Hara went four for four with one run scored and three RBI to lead the Lasers.
Riverside (16-16, 9-8 OEC) scored in each of the first three innings, but was then shut down the rest of the way. In the first, sophomore CF Cade Gotta (Solana Beach / San Diego Christian HS) singled up the middle and was on his way to stealing second, but a single through the hole at short stop by freshman 1B Daniel Arellano (Corona / Centennial HS) allowed Gotta to scoot over to third. After Arellano was caught stealing on a pick off attempt, freshman RF Ryan Garvey (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS) singled through the right side to drive in Gotta.
In the second, with one out, freshman SS Jake Middleton (Corona / Santiago HS) reached first on an infield fielding error and scored on a RBI triple by sophomore 2B Elijah Briseno (Rancho Cucamonga / Rancho Cucamonga HS), who later scored on an infield out.
RCC freshman starting LHP John Kappmeyer (Cathedral City / Cathedral City HS) was sailing along until the fateful eighth. Kappmeyer went 7-2/3 innings and allowed six runs (all earned) on nine hits and two walks and struck out six on 108 pitches (74 strikes) to see his record fall to 2-4.
IVC hard-luck (until today) starting sophomore RHP Jordan Geiger (Garden Grove HS) turned in a gutty performance as he went the distance with a whopping 134 pitches (87 strikes) and allowed four runs (two earned) on 13 hits and three walks with three strikeouts to improve to 2-6.
Five Tigers had two hits each to co-lead the squad.

BASEBALL FALLS TO IRVINE VALLEY, BUT REMAINS TIED FOR THIRD PLACE BASEBALL MEN (4/14/2012) |
Irvine Valley's baseball team used a four-run fifth inning to pull away from Riverside City for a 6-4 Orange Empire Conference victory in Irvine. The loss dropped the Tigers (16-15, 9-7) a game further back in the race for the second place as Santa Ana scored a 9-3 victory over Cypress. Despite the loss, however, Riverside remains tied for third place as Golden West was pounded by Orange Coast, 21-1. GOLDEN WEST EDGES RCC, 3-2, IN 12 INNINGS AS BOTH TEAMS ARE NOW TIED FOR THIRD IN OEC BASEBALL MEN (4/12/2012) |
Avoiding a sweep of the three-game conference series, the Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning and edged the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers, 3-2, Thursday afternoon in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game at the Evans Sports Complex.
Golden West (17-11-1, 9-6 OEC) received some timely two-out hitting when freshman SS Kyle Jones (Huntington Beach / Edison HS) dumped a shallow fly ball into short right field which eluded a diving RCC freshman RF Ryan Garvey (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS). Jones might have wound up with a triple, but he tripped over second base and had to settle for a double. Sophomore RF Josh Cunningham (Savanna HS) drilled a RBI single to center field for the winning 3-2 margin. Cunningham went three for four to lead the Rustlers.
The game was scoreless through seven innings when GWC scored twice. Riverside (16-14, 9-6 OEC) scored in the eighth and ninth innings to send the game into extra innings.
RCC freshman 1B Daniel Arellano (Corona / Centennial HS) singled and scored on an infield error in the eighth. In the ninth, freshman DH Seth Walston (Hemet HS) walked, stole second with two outs and scored on a RBI single by sophomore LF Grady Espinosa (Yucaipa HS) to tie the game at 2-2. Espinosa went two for five for the Tigers.
RCC freshman RHP Blake Burrell (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) went the first nine innings and received a âÂno decisionnnâ for his efforts to keep his record at 5-0. Burrell allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts on 104 pitches (78 strikes). His counterpart, GWC freshman RHP Nic Hanson (Huntington Beach HS) was more than effective as he lasted 7-1/3 innings and allowed one run (unearned) on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
GWC freshman RHP Spencer Giron (Long Beach) went the final 3-1/3 innings to notch the victory and improve to 1-1, while Riverside freshman RHP Joe Molina, who pitched the final three frames, took the loss (0-2).
Both teams-now tied for third place in the OEC, one game behind second-place Santa Ana-return to action on Saturday, Apr. 14, at 12 p.m. when RCC visits the Irvine Valley College (IVC) Lasers and GWC visits the Orange Coast College (OCC) Pirates in OEC action. |

CYPRESS TOPS TIGERS, 4-1, AS RIVERSIDE AVOIDS SHUT-OUT WITH NINTH-INNING RUN BASEBALL MEN (3/24/2012) |
RIVERSIDE -- Taking advantage of several miscues, the visiting Cypress College Chargers topped the host Riverside City College (RCC) Chargers, 4-1, in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) game Saturday afternoon at the Evans Sports Complex.
Cypress (15-7, 5-5 OEC) pulled to within one game of the second-place Tigers as it pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the second inning and unearned runs in the third and fourth frames in support of sophomore starting RHP Josh Anderson (Murrieta / Murrieta Valley HS) who went the first six innings (109 pitches, 66 strikes) and allowed no runs on just four hits while allowing three walks and striking out five to improve to 4-0.
Riverside (11-12, 6-4 OEC) was blanked until the bottom of the ninth when freshman SS Nick Bruno (Hemet / Hemet HS) was hit by a pitch with one out. In came pinch runner Kadyn Glass (Redlands / Redlands HS), who raced to third on a single to center field by sophomore CF Cade Gotta (Solana Beach / San Diego Christian HS), and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman RF Ryan Garvey (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS).
RCC starting freshman LHP Chad Diffine (Chino / Chino Hills HS) lasted only 1-1/3 innings as he allowed the first two runs (both unearned) of the game on two hits and two walks and saw his record fall to 0-1.
The top of the second inning had its quirks to say the least. Freshman LF Trent Zaks (Cypress HS) led off with a single through the left side of the infield. After a fly out, the at-bat of freshman SS Parker Starr (Orange / Canyon HS) gained additional life when a foul pop up was dropped for the first of four RCC errors. Zaks stole second base before Starr eventually worked a 3-2 count for a walk as Zaks was stealing third base. After a RCC pitching change, a passed ball moved Starr to second base. Cypress lead-off batter, sophomore CF Pierce Bily (Anaheim Hills / Orange Lutheran HS) hit a pop up to short left field which was fielded by SS Nick Bruno for a sacrifice fly as Zaks scored the game's first run.
The next two runs of the game scored on wild pitches before Bily drove in the Chargers' fourth run of the game on a more conventional sacrifice fly to right field in the fourth.
Both teams return to OEC action on Tuesday, March 27, at 2 p.m. when RCC visits Cypress.

RIVERSIDE -- Maintaining second place in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC), the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers topped the Santa Ana College (SAC) Dons, 6-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Evans Sports Complex.
Riverside (11-10, 6-2 OEC) converted five walks into two runs in the first inning to post a 2-0 lead. Riverside City freshman pitcher Blake Burrell pitched a complete-game, one-hitter as the Tigers scored a 6-0 victory over visiting Irvine Valley in an Orange Empire Conference game at the Evans Complex. Burrell (Canyon Springs HS/Moreno Valley), who threw 98 pitches, 68 for strikes, had a no-hitter for 7 1/3 innings. Irvine Valley pinch-hitter Sean Guite broke the no-hitter with a single into left field. He finished with 12 fly outs and 9 ground outs. Burrell (2-0) struck out five and walked one for the game, which took just two hours and 10 minutes to play.

Riverside (8-9, 3-1 OEC) led, 1-0, trailed, 2-1, led, 4-2, and was tied, 4-4, heading into the bottom of the seventh when - with two outs and nobody aboard - freshman SS Nick Bruno (Hemet / Hemet HS) laced a single to center field and stole second base to give sophomore CF Cade Gotta (Solana Beach / San Diego Christian HS) drilled a line drive which just eluded the outstretched glove of the leaping GWC sophomore CF Donald Sneed (Huntington Beach / Edison HS) and bounced all the way to the base of the center-field fence, chasing Bruno home with the go-ahead run and Gotta raced around the bases for the inside-the-park home run and a 6-4 Tigers lead.
Golden West (11-5-1, 3-1 OEC) tied the game a 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning on a pair of unearned runs. A pair of singles, a fielding error, a stolen base, a walk, a wild pitch and a run-producing fielderrrâÂs choice helped forge the short-lived tie.
The Tigers pushed across three runs in the third when they loaded the bases on a bloop single to left field, a walk by Bruno and a single by Gotta. Freshman RF Ryan Garvey (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS) sent a 0-1 pitch through the left side to drive in the first run of the frame. Riverside starter, sophomore RHP Matt Chabot (Riverside / Woodcrest Christian HS) lasted only 5-1/3 innings and was in line for the win when he left with the 4-2 lead, but he eventually allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks to wind up with a no decision. RCC''Âs second reliever of the game, freshman LHP John Kappmeyer (Cathedral City / Cathedral City HS) came on in the seventh inning to spell freshman RHP Joe Molina (Redlands / East Valley HS) and went the final 2-2/3 innings to pick up the win (1-2), but not without some ninth-inning drama by Golden West.
The Rustlers loaded the bases on a single, a walk and an error on a sacrifice bunt, before freshman 3B Bobby Webb (Long Beach / Wilson HS) delivered a RBI-single through the left side to reload the bases as GWC crept to within 6-5. After a shallow fly out, Kappmeyer induced freshman SS Kyle Jones (Huntington Beach / Edison HS) to hit into a 5-3 double play to end the game in only 2:11.
For RCC, Gotta and Bruno each had two hits. Gotta added two RBI and two runs, while Bruno scored three times. For GWC, Webb went three for four and was also hit by a pitch. BASEBALL KNOCKS OFF SANTA ANA, 4-3 BASEBALL MEN (3/1/2012) |
After a tough preseason, Riverside City baseball opened the Orange Empire Conference schedule by knocking off the five-time defending conference champions Santa Ana, 4-3.
Riverside, which began conference play with a 5-8 record, scored all four of its runs in the second and third innings. MSAC HANGS 5 IN TOP OF FIRST, CRUISES TO 9-4 WIN OVER TIGERS AT RIVERSIDE BASEBALL MEN (2/28/2012) |
RIVERSIDE -- Watching the visitors score early and often, thanks to some shoddy fielding, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers dropped a 9-4 non-conference decision to the Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties Tuesday evening at the Evans Sports Complex.
Last week at MSAC saw the Tigers win an 11-inning, 3-2 nailbiter at Mazmanian Field in Walnut. But what a difference a week makes as the Mounties parlayed two singles, two walks, a hit batter and three RCC errors into five runs (four team/unearned).
The Mounties (8-4) added a pair of runs in the second and two in the fifth on a bases-loaded double by sophomore left-fielder Jeff Crowe as MSAC vaulted to a 9-3 lead after 4-1/2 innings to cruise to the win and snap a four-game losing streak in the process.
Riverside (5-8) tallied three times in the fourth inning on RBI-singles by freshman 2B Kadyn Glass and freshman DH Maurice Rodriguez and a run-producing forceout off the bat of freshman C Jacob Rogers. The Tigers added a run in the fifth when sophomore CF Cade Gotta singled home freshman SS Nick Bruno, who led RCC with two hits.
RCC freshman starter, RHP Troy Scott (0-1), never made it out of the first inning as he surrendered four runs (two earned) on one hit, one walk and one hit batter in one-third of an inning. MSAC freshman RHP Eric Morell (2-0), who came on in relief of starter Taylor Jimenez in the fifth inning, allowed one run (unearned) on two hits along with two strikeouts to gain the win.
With the loss, RCC has lost its last two games heading into its Orange Empire Conference (OEC) opener on Thursday, Mar. 1, at Santa Ana College (SAC) in a 2 p.m. first pitch against the Dons. MSAC will continue non-conference action on Saturday, Mar. 3, when it visits the Ventura College Pirates.

11TH-INNING ERROR GIVES BASEBALL A 3-2 WIN BASEBALL MEN (2/21/2012) |
Mt. San Antonio second baseman Robert Mier's error in the top of the 11th inning allowed Jacob Rogers to score from second base, giving Riverside City a 3-2 non-conference win over the Mounties. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tigers, who are headed to Sacramento for a three-game series with Sacramento City beginning on Thursday, February 23.

WESTERN NEVADA SWEEPS THREE-GAME SERIES WITH 4-3 WIN BASEBALL MEN (2/18/2012) |
Western Nevada completed a three-game sweep of Riverside City with a 4-3 win on Saturday, February 18. The loss was Riverside's third straight and sixth in eight games headed into a four-game road trip, which includes three games in Sacramento against Sacramento City College.
Riverside showed a bit more effort in this loss as the Tigers (2-6) collected a season-high 10 hits. The Tigers had a chance to tie or possibly win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning as Riverside had the tying run on second and the winning run on first, but Western Nevada reliever Rayne Raven got Richard Rodriguez (Moreno Valley/Canyon Springs HS) to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Western Nevada (11-5) scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and seventh innings in opening a 4-0 lead. Riverside pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Cade Gotta (Solano Beach, CA/San Diego Christian). The Tigers then got within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Elijah Briseno singled home two runs, but it would be as close as the Tigers would get. |

WILDCATS TOP TIGERS, 3-1, IN MIDDLE GAME OF THREE-GAME SERIES BASEBALL MEN (2/17/2012) |
Playing in a much closer game than the night before, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers lost a 3-1 non-conference game to the visiting Western Nevada College (WNC) Wildcats Friday evening in the second of a three-game series at the Evans Sports Complex.
Western Nevada (10-5), from Carson City, Nev., didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard by scoring once in the first and twice in the third inning to jump to a 3-0 lead. In the opening frame, 2B A.J. Hernandez rolled an 0-2 pitch up the middle for a base hit to open the game. CF Dillon Ness drilled a 1-0 pitch for a line drive down the left-field line which two-hopped the fence for a double as Hernandez raced home with the gameeeeâÃs first run.
In the third, Ness had another run-producing hit, a single, which chased home RF Bobby Gazzola for a 2-0 lead. A Tiger infield error allowed the game's third run to score and it was WNC 3, RCC 0.
Riverside (2-5) got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when freshman DH Ricardo Rodriguez (Moreno Valley / Canyon Springs HS) walked to start the inning and scored two outs later on a RBI-single by freshman SS Jake Middleton (Corona / Santiago HS).
WNC starter, RHP Tyler Spencer (3-1) went the first five innings and allowed just the one run (earned) on one hit, while walking three and striking out six on 79 pitches (47 strikes). DH Rayne Raven came on in the ninth and induced a game-ending double play to notch his second save. RCC starter, sophomore RHP Matt Chabot (Riverside / Woodcrest Christian HS) went the first six innings and allowed the three runs (two earned) on three hits, while walking three and striking out four (104 pitches, 61 strikes).

WILDCATS TAME TIGERS, 12-4, THANKS TO 10-RUN SEVENTH INNING BASEBALL MEN (2/16/2012) |
RIVERSIDE Watching a close contest explode out of control in the last third of the game, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers lost a 12-4 non-conference game to the visiting Western Nevada College (WNC) Wildcats, out of Carson City, Nev., Thursday evening in the first of a three-game series at the Evans Sports Complex.
Riverside (2-4) trailed only 1-0 heading into the top of the seventh inning before the Wildcats erupted ofr ten runs (one team earned run) on eight hits and four RCC errors to forge ahead, 11-0. RCC got on the scoreboard with one run in the eighth and three in the ninth.
Western Nevada (9-5) pushed across the first run of the game with two out in the top of the second when 3B Alex Schmidt singled up the middle, went to second on a balk and scored on a run-producing double to left-center field by the No. 9 batter, designated hitter Cole Ferguson.
The Tigers nearly tied the game in their half of the second inning when freshman 3B Jake Middleton (Corona / Santiago HS) opened with a double to medium left field when the ball was apparently lost in the lights. Freshman C Maurice Rodriguez (Lake Elsinore / Temescal Canyon HS) singled to center field and went to second on the throw home which cut down Middleton. Rodriguez soon went to third on an errant pickoff attempt by the WNC catcher, but was stranded there when the next three Tigers struck out.
RCC starter (and loser), freshman LHP John Kappmeyer (Cathedral City / Cathedral City HS) was sailing along until the fateful seventh. By the time he was pulled after his 100th pitch (66 for strikes), Riverside only trailed, 3-0, but the efforts of relief pitchers (freshman) Michael Davis (Riverside / Woodcrest Christian HS) and sophomore Chris Neff (Rancho Cucamonga / Rancho Cucamonga HS) were scuttled by three additional errors after there were two outs. Catcher Neil Lawhorn singled and RF Bobby Gazzola doubled to each drive in two runs and essentially put the game away.
WNC starter (and winner), RHP Andrew Woeck went the first seven innings, allowed no runs on four hits, while striking out eight and issuing three walks to improve to 2-0. Kappmeyer saw his record drop to 0-2. Schmidt led the Wildcats three hits (in five at-bats), with three runs and two RBI. Ferguson also went three for five with one run and two RBI. Late-inning substitution, freshman 2B Kadyn Glass (Redlands / Redlands HS) singled down the left-field line with two outs in the ninth to drive in two runs for the Tigers.
Both teams return to action on Friday, Feb. 17, in the middle game of a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. before concluding the three-game series with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.

In the Tigers' fourth, Gotta stroked a two-run single to plate sophomore C Brad Burcroff (Redlands / East Valley HS) and freshman SS Brandon Van Horn (La Canada / St. Francis HS) to give RCC a 5-3 lead. In the fifth, Riverside added a pair of tallies on a double-play grounder and a RBI-single by freshman 2B Kadyn Glass (Redlands / Redlands HS).

CUESTA'S GOLDSMITH SILENTS RIVERSIDE'S BATS BASEBALL MEN (2/8/2012) |
Cuesta starting pitcher Jordan Goldsmith allowed two hits through eight innings as the Cougars handed Riverside a 9-0 loss in a non-conference game in San Luis Obispo. Riverside, which will host Fresno City in a two-game series beginning on Friday, was held hitless for the six innings. Goldsmith gave way to Sean Mullen in the ninth, and he worked a scoreless inning.
Meanwhile, Cuesta, who knocked around five Tiger pitchers for 10 hits, benefitted from five Riverside City errors. The Cougars (1-3) wasted little time in getting to starter Frankie Orejel. He surrendered three hits and two walks as Cuesta scored three first-inning runs. Riverside didn't have a pitcher last more than two innings, include Orejel who suffered the loss. Cuesta, who left 12 runners on base, held a 5-0 lead in the seventh inning when they added to its lead with another three-run inning.
The loss dropped Riverside, which began the season ranked No. 11 in the country, to 1-2 on the season. |

RIVERSIDE ROUTS ECC-COMPTON, 10-1, FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON BASEBALL MEN (2/4/2012) |
Breaking open a close game with a three-run sixth inning, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers went on to post a 10-1 non-conference win over the visiting El Camino College-Compton Center (ECC-C) Tartars Saturday evening at the Evans Sports Complex.
Riverside (1-1), leading 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, pushed across four runs âà all unearned âà when it sandwiched a pair of Tartar infield errors and walks around one hit to build an insurmountable 7-1 lead. Freshman SS Brandon Van Horn (La Canada / St. Francis HS) blooped a single to short left field to drive in the inninggggâÃs first run. A passed ball and wild pitch delivered the next two runs and the second error of the inning allowed the fourth run to score to cap the inning.
ECC-Compton (0-2), which lost 15-13 at home to Allan Hancock on Friday, scored its only run in the top fifth frame when sophomore 3B Alex Sixtos (Banning HS) drilled a single which rolled under the right-fielderrrrâÃs glove and all the way to the wall for a three-base error and the Tartars lone score.
Sophomore starting RHP Jordan Mejia (Riverside / Arlington HS) lasted only 4-1/3 innings (two hits, one unearned run) before yielding to freshman LHP Joey Gallardo (Hemet / Hemet HS) who tossed the next 3-2/3 innings, allowing only one hit, and improving to 1-0. RIVERSIDE WATCHES EAST L.A. STEAL A 4-3 WIN IN SEASON OPENER FOR BOTH BASEBALL MEN (2/3/2012) |
RIVERSIDE Going from ahead to lose, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers saw an early lead disappear as the visiting East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Huskies literally stole this one and posted a 4-3 non-conference win Friday evening at the Evans Sports Complex in the season opener for both clubs.
East L.A. (1-0) tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh, went ahead 3-1 in the eighth and posted the winning run in the top of the ninth on an infield error. Riverside (0-1) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fifth and tied the game at 3-3 with two in the eighth.
In the fateful ninth, ELAC sophomore CF Robert Gonzalez (Long Beach / Millikan HS) hit a shot back to the box for an infield single and promptly stole second base for his third swipe of the game. Sophomore 1B Manuel Estevez (Cathedral HS) then reached first base when his groundball went through the legs of the RCC first baseman enabling Gonzalez to come around to score. Estevez stole second base for his fourth theft of the game as the Huskies had 11 steals in 11 attempts in the game.
Riverside got on the scoreboard when freshman LF Ryan Garvey (Palm Desert / Palm Desert HS) â with his famous father, Steve, in attendance â blooped a double down the right-field line and later scored on a one-out single to left field by sophomore C Brad Burcroff (Redlands / East Valley HS) for a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, Garvey missed a home run by inches when his drive off the top of the left-field fence went for a double.
After ELAC plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, RCC did likewise. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for RCC before a pair of passed balls with sophomore RF Cade Gotta (Solana Beach / San Diego Christian HS) at-bat. ELAC reliever Greg Aldrete (San Dimas HS) came in the squelch the Tigersssâ rally and pitched and uneventful ninth to get the win and improve to 1-0. Hard-luck loser Michael Davis (Riverside / Woodcrest Christian HS), who snuffed ELACCCâÂs rally in the eighth, took the loss (0-1). RCC pitching, despite allowing the 11 stolen bases, did notch 16 strikeouts.
Riverside will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when it hosts the El Camino College-Compton Center (ECC-Compton) Tartars in a 5 p.m. non-conference game. ELAC will visit the Citrus College Owls on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m., before visiting the Rio Hondo College (RHC) Roadrunners on Sunday, Feb. 5.
