BASKETBALL WOMEN (2/8/2012)

Riverside City women's basketball team snapped its five-game win streak with a 62-52 victory over Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference game played at California Baptist University. Riverside, which hosts Irvine Valley on Friday, February 10 at 6:30 pm at CBU, won despite turning the ball over 36 times, a season-high for the Tigers.

Riverside, which had all seven players score, benefited for Santa Ana's shooting woes. The Dons (6-18, 1-9) was 20 of 65 from the floor and 3 of 28 from beyond the three-point line. Fullerton's Aunjanay Chambers led all scorers with 22 points.

Cypress had 13 players score as the Chargers used its bench depth to defeat Riverside, 67-52, in an Orange Empire Conference game at California Baptist University. The loss was Riverside eighth in its last nine games headed into next Wednesday's road game at Fullerton.

Cypress, which entered the night tied with Fullerton for first place in the Orange Empire Conference, used a quick start, using a 15-0 run to take a 18-5 lead. A lead the Chargers (16-8, 6-1) would never surrender. At one point, Cypress had opened a 25-9 before eventually settling for a 34-18 halftime lead after the Tigers (7-16, 1-6) had gotten within nine at 26-16. A minute into the second half, Cypress had opened a 20-point lead at 38-18, but the Riverside 7 rallied, getting within 9 points at 57-48 with 1:36 remaining in the game. However, be as close as Riverside would get.

RIVERSIDE PUTS UP FIGHT, BUT FALLS TO SADDLEBACK

BASKETBALL WOMEN (1/25/2012)

Riverside women's basketball team continues to frustrate and fight till the end, but the Tiger 7 just can't get over the hump. Tonight, it was a 55-48 loss to Saddleback in an Orange Empire Conference game at California Baptist University. The loss is Riverside's third straight and seventh in its last eight games. Four of the losses have been by a margin of 11 points or less.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS IN OVERTIME TO ORANGE COAST

BASKETBALL WOMEN (1/20/2012)

The game-tying buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Ashley Engeln will be the key memory from Friday night's overtime win for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team, but it took a total team effort for the Pirates to pull out the 70-64 victory over the gritty Riverside College Tigers.

Playing with just seven players due to an early-season dismissal of several players, Riverside (7-14, 1-4) led for most of the game before the Pirates (10-12, 2-3) finally found some team-wide intensity on both sides of the floor. Trailing by as many as 13 points (40-27 with 16 minutes remaining), the Pirates turned things around and slowly began to narrow the gap against the tiring Tigers. A 15-4 Coast run cut the deficit down to just two with just under 8 minutes left to play.

Strong play by the Pirate trio of Engeln (game-high 20 points), Jalecia Wilson (eight points, 10 rebounds off of the bench) and Megan Hanson (12 points, eight assists) helped spark the second-half comeback.

However, the comeback seemed for naught as Tigers forward Heather Wohlk (team-best 16 points) hit a running jumper in the key with 25 seconds left, putting Riverside up 59-56. A missed jumper and OCC foul sent Tiger forward Christine Pascua to the line, but she missed both free throws, giving the Pirates one final chance to tie the game.

Hanson drove up the floor with nine seconds left and found Engeln at the arc. The sophomore guard let it fly just as the buzzer sound and found nothing but net, sending the game into overtime. It was the third straight OCC-Riverside game inside the Peterson Gym that went to overtime on a buzzer-beater by the Pirates.

And, just like the previous two, the Pirates would take full advantage of their opportunity. Jordyn Terukina opened the OT with a 3-pointer, giving the Pirates a lead they would not lose the rest of the way.

OCC's Jenna Arnett added 13 points and six rebounds in the victory. For the Tigers, other standout efforts came from Rikki Frohmader (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Dreanna Underwood (15 points, nine rebounds).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO IRVINE VALLEY

BASKETBALL WOMEN (1/18/2012)

Riverside women's basketball team played just five players, four of which scored in double figures, but it wasn't nearly enough as host Irvine Valley downed the Tigers, 61-49, in an Orange Empire Conference game. The Lasers, who used 12 players in the game, also had four players score in double figures, led by Megan Blackwell with 14 points.

For 20 minutes, Riverside (7-13, 1-3) made a game of it. The Tigers made 11 of 26 field goals, but was 0 for 9 on three pointers. Despite it, Riverside was within six points at halftime at 32-26. But the second half wasn't kind to the Tigers as they made just 7 of 31 shots and continued its struggle from beyond the three-point line, making 1 of 7 attempts. Riverside also committed 11 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.

Riverside, which travels to Orange Coast on Friday for a 7:30 pm game, was led by Shanika Ezell with 13 points. Rikki Frohmader added 12 points while Heather Wohlk and Dreanna Underwood each chipped in 10 apiece. Berniz Change, who had 4 points, grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds.

The loss keeps Santa Ana (5-13, 0-4) winless in conference play. Meanwhile, Riverside snapped a four-game losing streak.

Santa Ana's Anna Nguyen opened the game with a three-pointer but the remainder of the half belonged to the Tigers (7-12, 1-2) as they went on a 19-2 run, taking a 14-point lead with 6:14 left in the half. The Dons (5-13, 0-4) were able to bounce back and cut the Tigers lead to 29-16 going into the half. But the second half belonged to Riverside as the Tigers built their lead to as large as 19 points. Nguyen led all scorers with 25 points as the Dons lone scorer in double digits.

For 32 minutes, Riverside did just that, but the final eight minutes proved to be the difference as the Tigers fell 63-62 to the Hornets in an Orange Empire Conference game at California Baptist University.

Riverside (0-2, 6-12) built a 17-point lead with 17:37 remaining in the game, but the Tigers couldn't maintain the energy. Five of the six players played 33 minutes or more and it began to show down the stretch. Fullerton went on an 13-0 run to get within 45-41 with 14:33 left.
