WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SECURES SECOND PLACE

BASKETBALL WOMEN (2/12/2010)

Riverside women's basketball team assured itself of second place in the Orange Empire Conference after edging Saddleback, 53-47, in an Orange Empire Conference game at Wheelock Gym.

In addition to second place, which is Riverside's best finish since the 2005-06 season, the win probably assures the Tigers of at least two home playoff games. The win also gives Riverside 20 wins for the first time in four years, and the fourth time under head coach Alicia Berber.

Despite the win, which snapped a two-game losing streak, Riverside struggled on the offensive side of the ball. And at times had trouble getting the ball up the floor. The Tigers turned the ball over a season-high 26 times, leading to 15 Saddleback points. The Tigers also finished the game shooting 35 percent (23 of 65) from the floor. They managed to make just two three-pointers and missed half of their free throws.

Samera Dorton, the state player of the month for January, was held to 10 points and just 5 rebounds. Maria Mesa-Nauls led Riverside with 14 points, but needed 15 shots from the floor. She also made one of the Tigers' two three-pointers. Saddleback was led by Justine Chacon who had 16 points.

Riverside concludes the regular season next Wednesday when the Tigers host Cypress in a 5:30 p.m. game at Wheelock Gym.

FULLERTON SECURES SHARE OF CONFERENCE TITLE

BASKETBALL WOMEN (2/10/2010)

Fullerton assured itself a share of the Orange Empire Conference title with a 79-64 victory over Riverside in a conference game in Fullerton. With the win, the Hornets, ranked No. 2 in the state, improved to 9-0 in conference and 25-1 overall. The Tigers, meanwhile, are 7-3 and 19-8 after losing two consecutive conference games.

Riverside returns home Friday to face off against Saddleback in a 5:30 p.m. game. The Tigers remain in second place with two conference games remaining.

In the loss to Fullerton, Riverside struggled in the first half. The Tigers made just 9 of 27 field goals and 2 of 8 free throws as the Tigers fell behind 40-29 at halftime. Their struggles continued in the second half as Riverside was 10 of 31 and missed all five three-point attempts.

IRVINE VALLEY UPSETS RIVERSIDE, 60-58

BASKETBALL WOMEN (2/5/2010)

Irvine Valley's Erika Garcia hit a short jumper with four seconds left as the Lasers upset Riverside, 60-58, in an Orange Empire Conference game in Irvine.

Down by six (29-23) at halftime Riverside rallied to tie the game as Arianna Oyebanji hit a lay-up with 13 seconds left. After an Irvine Valley (5-3, 19-4) timeout, Garcia broke open and hit the jumper, giving Irvine Valley the lead with 18 seconds left. Riverside in-bounded the ball, but didn't get a shot off in the final seconds.

The loss hurts Riverside's chances of claiming a share of the conference title. The Tigers (7-2, 19-7) are headed to Fullerton on Wednesday in what many thought would be a showdown for the conference title. Now, Riverside heads west for what appears to be a must win situation if the Tigers want to claim a share of the conference title.

Riverside had two players score in double figures. Sophomore Gloria Thomas had 13 points and sophomore Crystal Vazquez also had 13. Irvine Valley was led by DJ Butler who had 18 points. Garcia and Ashley Fajardo had 12 apiece.
