Coach McCarron encourages Pelarde at 3-mile mark

Riverside sophomore Jeff Pelarde finished third at the California Community Colleges Athletic Association State Meet in Fresno over the weekend. Pelarde, a graduate of Riverside Poly who covered the course in 20 minutes, 13 seconds, finished behind Hartnell's Daniel Tapia (20:05) and El Camino's Cardona David (20:12). At the three-mile mark he was in 31st place, making up 28 spots in the final mile. Pelarde's third-place finish was the highest finish by a Riverside runner since 1994.

With Pelarde's third-place finish, Riverside managed to finish 12th overall. The Tigers' next best finisher was Jesse Dorado in 64th place (21:10). Jeff Blakely was 74th in a time of 21:38 and Daniel Cooper was 92nd in 21:52. Joshua Fishelburg was Riverside's final scoring runner as he finished 106th in a time of 22:01.

Riverside's overall time of 107 minutes and 13 seconds was over five minutes faster than when the Tigers ran the course in September at the Fresno Invitational.

San Bernardino Valley was the overall winner, earning its fourth consecutive state championship. The Wolverines finished with 67 points. Orange Coast was second with 133, Glendale was third (164) and City College of San Francisco finished fourth (180) with Sequoias (228) coming in fifth.

"We ran well as a team," said head coach Jim McCarron, "but our number two runner all season, Daniel Cooper, was hobbled with a hip injury that made the difference between us placing in the top 6."

Despite his injury, Cooper was able to finish the race.

"I believe that these young men will make big impact this track season as we battle for a third straight state championship, and our freshmen group will be ready to come back next cross country season to fight for a top spot at the state meet, especially with the group of freshmen we have coming in" said McCarron.

Riverside men's cross country team advanced to the Southern California Championship meet after finishing second at the Orange Empire Conference meet on Friday (Oct. 30).

The Tigers were led by Jeff Pelarde, who won the individual championship with a 20:21 clocking over the Central Park course in Huntington Beach. Ironically, Pelarde was led off the course for 20 seconds, before rejoining the 68 runners and winning the race. He becomes the second Riverside runner in the last four years to win the conference title.

As a team, this is the Tigers third second-place finish in the last four years. Orange Coast was the overall winner. The Pirates finished with a score of 26 points, 27 points head of Riverside. Fullerton (75 points) was third, followed by Saddleback (90), Santiago Canyon (147) and Golden West (175).

Riverside had four runners earn all-conference honors - Pelarde, Daniel Cooper, Jeff Blakely and Jesse Dorado. Cooper finished fifth overall, while Blakely was 14th and Dorado came in 16th.

"Jeff and Daniel ran great races," said head coach Jim McCarron. "I was impressed with Jefffâ€s focus and drive to win after he was taken off course by the lead bike. He had a 30-meter lead before the incident, and after it he had to make-up a 20-meter deficit."

According to McCarron the "surprise of the day" was the Tigers' fifth runner Alberto Camacho. Camacho finished 19th in a time of 21:54. His time was two-and-a-half minutes faster than when he ran the course in September.

The Tigers will be competing in the regional meet on Friday, November 6th at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. The top 12 teams will move on to state to face the top 12 from the north in Fresno later in the month.

RIVERSIDE 2ND AT GOLDEN WEST INVITATIONAL/OEC PREVIEW

CROSS COUNTRY MEN (9/25/2009)

Competing in the Golden West Invitational and the Orange Empire Conference Preview Meet in Huntington Beach, Riverside finished second against all of the competition and first among the conference teams.

The headline, however, is Riverside finishing second overall since the Tigers were competing against five programs ranked ahead of them in the most recent regional cross country rankings. The meet featured 22 teams and nearly 200 runners.

Riverside finished with 72 points, 37 points behind traditional power Glendale, but 10 points better than El Camino, 80 points than Fullerton and 81 better than Mt. San Antonio, respectively.
