San Antonio (123) was third, followed by Cuesta (147), Antelope Valley (149), Moorpark (174), LA Trade Tech (201), Palomar (302), DeAnza (307) and Pasadena (316). Riverside finished with 353 points.

Riverside was led by Nakeya Alexander, who finished in 31st place in a time of 19 minutes and 31 seconds. Teammate Jennifer Dixon finished in 34th place with a time of 19:33.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY NINTH AT REGIONAL MEET

CROSS COUNTRY WOMEN (11/4/2011)

Riverside women's cross country team finished ninth at the Southern California Championship meet, giving the Tigers a spot in the state championship meet on Saturday, November 19 in Fresno. The Tigers was led by Jennifer Dixon who finished 22nd with a time of 18:53. That time was faster than her previous personal best of 20:04.

"The conditions were ideal by any means," said women's head coach Damien Smith. "So for her to break her previous best time by nearly two minutes, it was a pretty amazing race for her."

Pace by Dixon, Riverside finished with 298 points. Glendale was the overall winner, finishing with 27 points as the Vaqueros' five scoring runners, finished 1, 2, 3, 9 and 12. Orange Empire Conference champion Orange Coast was second with 100 points, followed by Los Angeles Trade Tech (101), Mt. San Antonio (137) and Antelope Valley (171).

After Dixon, Riverside had runners place 33rd (NaKeya Alexander, 19:17), 70th (Tara Trevino, 20:04), 83rd (Lisbet Castaneda, 20:17) and 90th (Suzanne Holt, 20:29).

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM THIRD AT CONFERENCE MEET

CROSS COUNTRY WOMEN (10/28/2011)

Orange Coast College swept the Orange Empire Conference Cross Country Championship meet, which was hosted by Riverside City College on the cross-country course at district's Moreno Valley College campus. The hilly course, comprised of grass and dirt, proved to be to the liking of the Pirates.

In the women's race, Orange Coast - as expected - won the conference title as the Pirates placed four runners in the top four and its fifth-scoring runner in sixth place. Orange Coast finished with 16 points, a near perfect score for cross country. Fullerton was a surprise second-place finisher as the Hornets placed its five scoring runners in the top 22. Riverside, which had expected to challenge Orange Coast for the title, was third with 82 points.

Riverside's top runner, NaKeya Alexander, who had been sick all week, finished a disappointing 16th. Jennifer Dixon, a sophomore, was Riverside's top finisher as she finished seventh at 21:05. Teammate Lisbet Castaneda was ninth, but it was enough to offset Alexander's finish and the strong running of Fullerton. The Hornets were led by Jacqueline Escobedo who was eighth (21:20), and Nicole Brennan who finished 12th at 21:35. Fullerton then got a strong grouping with runners finishing 18th, 19th and 23rd. After Alexander, Riverside's next highest finisher was 24th.

Finishing fourth was Saddleback with 103 points followed by Santa Ana (116), Santiago Canyon (149) and Golden West (185).

Orange Coast sophomore Meghan Foley was the meet's overall winner, finishing the hilly three-mile course in a time of 20 minutes and 14 seconds. She beat teammate Analicia Silva, a sophomore, to the finish line by 14 seconds.

The top five teams advanced to the Southern California Championship Meet, which will be held in Ontario next Friday.

Riverside men's team was trying to repeat as conference champions for the first time since 1992, but Orange Coast put that hope to rest early as the Pirates had their five-scoring runners finish 3-4-5-6-7, giving them an 18-point margin of victory over runner-up Riverside. Things looked good for Riverside early as freshman John Guzman led the race for a vast majority. Saddleback's Ricardo Campuzano, however, ran him down, but Guzman's second-place finish in a time of 21:31, 2.5 seconds behind Campuzano appeared to put the Tigers in the chance to repeat. That was until Orange Coast's five emerged.

Paced by Campuzano's finish, Saddleback was able to finish third with 64 points. Fullerton was fourth with 129 points, followed by Golden West (148) and Santiago Canyon (163).

The top four finishers advance to the Southern California Championship meet next Friday in Ontario.
