RIVERSIDE WOMEN FOURTH AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP CROSS COUNTRY WOMEN (11/21/2009) |
Riverside women's cross country team surpassed expectations at the California Community Colleges Athletic Association State Meet in Fresno, when the Tigers pulled off a fourth-place finish. The finish gives Riverside's program its fourth top 5 finish in the last seven seasons. Riverside went into the meet ranked No. 5 in Southern California.
Glendale won the state title, edging Orange Coast 43 to 80. Mt. San Antonio was third (92) followed by Riverside (129), De Anza (277), Los Angeles Trade Tech (279), Hartnell (298), Cuesta (321), American River (344) and Sacramento (353).
Riverside sophomores Katherine Gomez (Patriot) and Brenda Perez (Arlington) led Riverside with 15th and 23rd finishes, respectively. Both runners set new personal times for a 5 kilometer run - Gomez in 18 minutes, 54 seconds and Perez in 19:15.
Meanwhile, first-year runner Adrianna Davidek (Patriot) shaved 90 seconds off her time from her run over the same course in September. She finished 25th overall in a time of 19:18. Freshman Casey Candelaria (King) and Ashley Perryman (Yucaipa/Cal Lutheran) would round out Riverside's scoring runners. Both finished in the top 40, with Candelaria finishing in 26th at 19:21 and Perryman in 40th at 19:39.
"This team has certainly run very well coming down the stretch (Conference, Regional and State championships)," said head coach Mike Barbee. "Each week the girls were running faster and finishing closer together. The results are a product of their hard work and dedication.
Needless to say, I am very proud of these ladies. Though our top five runners often changed positions, the results just kept getting better. Anytime you can do better than your rank or previous position against the same teams, you have succeeded."

Brenda Perez was the second finisher in a time of 19:23 good enough for 28th overall. Casey Candelaria, Ashley Perryman and Adrianna Davidek would round out the scoring with respective places of 37th, 45th and 46th. Riverside's sixth and seventh runners, Daniella Retano and Bekah Fairley also ran very strong performances.
"To see everyone run the best race they've had all season is extremely gratifying," said Barbee "The post season is the time of the year you aim toward to run your best and that is exactly what the ladies did today. We hope to retain this momentum and be at full strength for the CCCAA Championships in two weeks, the gap between us and third and fourth place is very large, so we have our work cut out for us." |

Mesa, Arizona and Pima, Arizona were third and fourth, respectively. Host Mt. San Antonio was fifth with Riverside finishing 55 points behind the Mounties. Johnson County of Kansas was seventh with Cerritos, Victory Valley and Oxnard rounding out the top 10.
For Riverside, Katherine Gomez (Patriot) had a very good race, pacing us with a twenty-third place finish, said head coach Mike Barbee. Larissa Davis (ML King), who had been the Tigers' top finisher in the their previous four meets, finished in 32nd place. Rounding out our scorers were Casey Candelaria (ML King), Brenda Perez (Arlington) and Daniella Retano (Kaiser).
"During the race, it was apparent we were not having a good race," said Barbee. "The conditions were very hot and dry and our team obviously didn't react as well as some to the adverse conditions. The race had a very large field. I am really happy to see some girls able to step up and help while there teammates fell back a bit."
Barbee cited the performances of Katherine and Daniella.
"We have the important races yet to come with the Orange Empire Conference Finals coming in two weeks and exactly three weeks from today we'll be back at Mt. SAC for the Regional Championship meet," said Barbee. "It's comforting we won't be a “bubble” team as far as qualifying to state is concerned, but rather a team which can contend for a top-five position in the region."
