CYPRESS SCORES A 7-0 VICTORY OVER TIGERS

FASTPITCH WOMEN (3/10/2010)


Cypress pitchers Katrina Pinkowski and Mia Magalona combined for a two-hit, shutout as the Chargers (9-0, 18-0) scored a 7-0 victory over Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference game in Cypress.

Jackie Serna (single) and Lindsay Monk (double) had the only hits for the Tigers (5-4, 10-9). Pinkowski, a graduate of Corona High School, struck out 12 batters and walked one in 5 2/3 innings. All but one Riverside player - Shelby Vanderwall - was a strike out victim.

Riverside returns home on Friday for a 6 p.m. game against Fullerton at the Evans Sports Complex.

FASTPITCH CAPS WEEK BY WINNING 4 OF 5 IN FRESNO

FASTPITCH WOMEN (3/7/2010)


Riverside's fastpitch team capped a busy week by winning four of five games. The Tigers won six of seven games last week and have won eight of their last nine and nine of their last 11 games after starting the season with four consecutive losses.

At the Fresno Tournament, Riverside scored wins of 6-3 over DeAnza, 15-0 over Reedley, 5-0 over Redwoods and 9-1 over Victor Valley. The Tigers' only blemish was a 9-3 loss to host Fresno.

Sophomore outfielder Jackie Serna had a big week, going 9 for 21 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Olivia Wilcox had a strong tournament with three home runs and 5 RBIs. She went 5 for 15 in Fresno.

Riverside (10-8) returns to Orange Empire Conference play on Wednesday (March 10) when the Tigers take on Cypress, the defending conference champions, at 3 p.m. in Cypress. They return home on Friday to host Fullerton at 6 p.m.

RIVERSIDE WINS ITS FIFTH STRAIGHT

Riverside's fastpitch team won its fifth straight game with a 1-0 victory over Santiago Canyon.

Tiger pitcher Tracy Hampton won her fifth game of the season. Santiago Canyon managed to get the leadoff hitter on base in five of the seven innings, but Hampton worked out of the jam each time. The Hawks' best scoring opportunity came in the third inning when Jessica Brillants led off with a single,, went to second on an infield hit and then tried to score on Ashley Flatten's single to right field. Patti Mosner fielded the ball and threw Brillants out at the plate keeping the game scoreless at the time.

Riverside (5-3, 6-7) scored its only run in the fourth inning when Jackie Serna singled and then scored on Lindsay Monk's RBI double to right field.

RIVERSIDE BACK IN THE CONFERENCE RACE

Riverside's fastpitch team continues to climb back into the Orange Empire Conference race after a 6-2 victory over previously unbeaten Saddleback in Mission Viejo. With the win, Riverside improved to 4-3 in conference, 5-7 overall. The Gauchos fell to 6-1 and 13-2.

Scoreless through three innings, Riverside erupted for five runs in the fourth inning and tacked on another in the top of the seventh. Patti Masner was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and teammate Audriana Gutierrez was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Riverside pitcher Reylene Cornado picked up her first victory of the season, working seven innings. She allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one. She allowed two runs in the sixth inning.

Riverside travels to Orange on Wednesday for a game against Santiago Canyon at 3 p.m.

HAMPTON PITCHES RIVERSIDE PAST SANTA ANA

Riverside freshman Tracy Hampton pitched a five-inning, one-hit game as the Tigers knocked off Santa Ana, 9-1, in an Orange Empire Conference game at the Evans Sports Complex. Hampton took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but pinch hitter Ashley Ross singled, breaking up the no-no.

Riverside (3-2, 4-7) continued to rough up opposing pitching. The Tigers collected eight hits, including a home run from sophomore Jackie Serna. Riverside also benefited from five Santa Ana (2-4, 7-8-1) errors, which led to six unearned runs. Serna's two-run home run in the first inning stacked Hampton to all of the runs she would need.

Riverside's Patti Masner also knocked three runs, behind three hits. Riverside's top four hitters went 6 for 12 with 7 RBIs and four runs scored.

The Tigers continue their conference schedule with a road game on Monday (March 1) with a game at Saddleback in Mission Viejo.

Lindsay Monk knocked in five runs

Riverside pounded out 11 hits as the Tigers pounded Orange Coast 11-0 in an Orange Empire Conference road game in Costa Mesa. The victory improves Riverside to 2-3 in conference and 3-7 overall. Ironically, in all three wins this season Riverside has scored double-digit runs (12, 11, 11).

The 11 runs, however, was more than what pitcher Tracy Hampton needed. The freshman from Yucaipa limited Orange Coast (1-4, 6-8) to four hits, while striking out one. She walked none.

Lindsay Monk, a freshman from Paloma Valley, knocked in five runs - four coming on a grand slam in the sixth inning. Sophomore Jackie Serna, who had two hits, also homered in the fifth inning.

Riverside hosts Santa Ana in a 2 p.m. Orange Empire Conference game on Friday (Feb. 26).

SERNA DRIVES RIVERSIDE PAST GOLDEN WEST

Sophomore Jackie Serna knocked in four runs and Rickki Scates knocked in two as Riverside pounded Golden West, 11-3, in an Orange Empire Conference game at the Evans Sports Complex.

Serna staked Riverside (1-3, 2-6) to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with home run to left field, which landed on hitting cage on the baseball field. The Tigers added three runs in the second and then erupted for six in the third to put the game out of reach.

Tracy Hampton limited Golden West (1-3, 4-8) to five hits through 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Reylene Cornado who recorded the final two outs of the game.

FASTPITCH FALLS TO FULLERTON, 3-1

Fullerton scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and then held on for a 3-1 victory over Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference game in Fullerton.

The loss drops Riverside, which qualified for the state finals last year, 0-2 in conference and 1-6 overall.

Riverside took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Olivia Wilcox's RBI double, but the Hornets stung the Tigers for three runs on RBI hits by Diana Payan, Brandi Escarzaga and Melissa Myers.

CYPRESS ONE-HITS RIVERSIDE IN 2-0 WIN

Cypress pitchers Katrina Pinkowski and Alyssa Freight combined to throw a one-hitter as the Chargers edged Riverside, 2-0, in an Orange Empire Conference game at the Evans Sports Complex.

Pinkowski, a graduate of Corona High School, pitched the first five innings. She allowed no hits, striking out five and walking two. Freight, the 2008 state pitcher of the year, worked the final two innings, allowing Riverside's only hit. She struck out one.

Cypress (1-0 in conference and overall) scored a single runs in the first and third innings. Riverside had one serious scoring threat, but the Tigers couldn't push across a run. They stranded four runners, one in scoring position.

Riverside takes on College of the Canyons in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 13 beginning 2 p.m.

RIVERSIDE SQUANDERS LATE LEAD, FALL 10-9

Three outs away from scoring a come-from-behind win, Riverside surrendered four runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Tigers fell 10-9 to Saddleback in both teams' Orange Empire Conference opener at the Evans Sports Complex.

After scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Riverside (0-2) held a 7-6 lead, but the Gauchos (5-0) managed to score four runs, capped by Stephanie Chotkevys' two-run home run.

Riverside collected 14 hits in the game, but four errors and two Saddleback home runs doomed the Tigers. The Tigers also stranded 11 runners on base, with over half left in scoring position.

Riverside hosts defending conference champions, Cypress College on Friday in a 2 p.m. game at the Evans Complex.

RIVERSIDE DROPS SEASON OPENER, 8-0

Cerritos broke open a 1-0 game with a five-run third inning as the Falcons rolled to an 8-0 victory over Riverside in a non-conference game in Norwalk.

Cerritos, who knocked Riverside out of the state tournament in 2009, then scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning, allowing the game to be called after five innings.

Riverside managed just three hits against freshman pitcher Jessica Lozano. She held the Tigers to three singles, while striking out two and walking none.

2010 Tiger Backer Golf Tournament

The Riverside Community College Tiger Backer Association is accepting player applications for the 2010 Tiger Backer Classic Golf Tournament, which benefits the District's 19 athletic programs. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, April 5 at Canyon Crest Country Club.

The tournament is limited to the first 175 entry fees. Fees cover green fee, lunch, dinner and awards. It is a four-man scramble.
