FASTPITCH ADVANCES TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

FASTPITCH WOMEN (5/13/2012)

For just the second time in Riverside City history, the Tigers' fastpitch program will participate in the CCCAA State Championship Tournament after rallying to win the winner-take-all-game in Valencia, CA. After dropping the opening game 8-0 to host College of the Canyons, Riverside rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 5-3 win in the winner-take-all-game.

Riverside, the second-place team from the Orange Empire Conference, will be joined at the state tournament in Bakersfield, CA by Cypress, the defending state champions and the champions of the Orange Empire Conference, and from Northern California, College of the Siskiyous and Sierra. Pairings for the four-team, double-elimination tournament will be announced on Monday, May 14.

Riverside's only other trip to the state finals was in 2009 when the state took four teams from the south and four teams from the north for an eight-team tournament. In that appearance, the Tigers lost back-to-back games to Siskiyous and Cerritos colleges.

Canyons wasted little time in setting up the winner-take-all-game as the Cougars scored in all five innings for the first game, cruising to an 8-0 victory in five innings. Canyons collected eight hits off Riverside starter Nichole Zink, who struck out four and walked a season-high seven batters. Canyons' Kimmie Lockhart pitched a complete-game, one-hitter, striking out seven, while walking one. Lead-off hitter Natalie Barrios registered the Tigers' only hit in the fifth inning.

Zink, who has pitched every inning in the post-season, but a third of an inning in the first game against Canyons (42-5-1), regrouped in the winner-take-all-game. Zink, the state pitcher of the year, battled Lockhart pitch for pitch. Zink, who allowed single runs in the second, third and seventh innings, settled down after the third inning. She allowed just two hits over the final four innings, striking out four, while walking four. Lockhart wasn't as sharp as she was in the first game. The Tigers managed six hits off Lockhart and took advantage of three Cougar errors. Trailing 2-0 through 2 1/2 innings, Riverside pushed a run across in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Chelsea Crawley. The Tigers (33-13) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as Crawley singled home Barrios, who singled to center field.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Riverside pushed across three runs on two hits and two Canyons' errors. An infield hit scored one run and another scored on an error by Cougar catcher Amy Droege. Chelsea Rosario singled home the final run of the inning, giving Riverside a 5-2 lead. Canyons threatened in the top of the seventh inning as Zink walked back-to-back batters with one out. After a double steal put runners at second and third, Lockhart pushed across a run with a sacrifice fly before Zink got Droege to pop up to first base for the final out.

FASTPITCH WITHIN ONE WIN OF ADVANCING TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT

FASTPITCH WOMEN (5/12/2012)

Riverside City's fastpitch team advanced to the finals of its Southern California Regional Tournament with a 5-2 victory over Southwestern. The Tigers, who are trying to make the state finals for just the second time in the program's history, will face College of the Canyons, the host for the four-team, double-elimination tournament. Canyons advanced to the finals after knocking off Southwestern, which on Friday had beaten Canyons in the tournament's first game.

Riverside (32-13) will need to win one game on Sunday to advance to the CCCAA Championship tournament, which will be held in Bakersfield, CA next weekend. Two years ago, the Tigers advanced to the state finals, but were eliminated in straight games. Should Riverside lose the first game tomorrow, another game will be played 30 minutes after with the state bid on the line.

In the win over Southwestern (28-13), Riverside broke an early 1-1 tie with three runs in the second inning. In the inning, Tylar Hyatt walked to open the inning and was sacrificed to second. Chelsea Rosario moved her to third with an infield single. Natalie Barrios followed with a single to right field, scoring Hyatt, and when Southwestern right fielder Alex Gallegos couldn't handle the hit cleanly, Rosario scored with Barrios ending up at third base. Barrios then capped the scoring when she stole home.

The cushion was more then enough for sophomore pitcher Nichole Zink, who finished with a 10-hitter (all singles), striking out three, while walking one. The victory was Zink's 23rd of the year.

CRAWLEY DRIVES RIVERSIDE PAST SADDLEBACK IN REGIONAL TOURNEY

FASTPITCH WOMEN (5/11/2012)

Riverside City freshman first baseman Chelsea Crawley went 3 for 3 with 4 RBI's as the Tigers opened the Super Regional Tournament with a 12-4 rout of Saddleback at College of Canyons in Valencia, CA. Crawley doubled twice and hit a three-run home run to highlight the Tigers' nine-run third inning.

Riverside, which advances to the regional semifinal game against Southwestern, which upset No. 1 seed Canyons, 10-7, at 2 pm. Saddleback, a member of the Orange Empire Conference, will meet Canyons in an elimination game at noon.

Riverside (30-13) mustered 11 hits in the game, which was called after five and half innings due to the run rule. Of the Tigers' 11 hits, five were for extra bases. Riverside also benefited from four Saddleback errors. The Tigers - once again - got a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Nichole Zink, the state pitcher of the year. Zink allowed seven hits, walking three and striking out two. Saddleback (30-11) scored single runs in the first and third innings and two in the second off Zink, who is expected to pitch every inning of the post-season for the Tigers. With the win, Zink has now won 22 games this season.

Tigers Celebrate Their Clinching Victory

Riverside City's fastpitch team advanced to the Super Regional Tournament for the fifth straight year after taking the final two games of a three-game series with Citrus at the Evans Complex. After losing the first game on Saturday night, 2-1, Riverside turned the table on the Owls with a 2-1 victory, forcing a third game. Riverside (30-12) jumped out to a 4-1 lead and held on for a 6-4 victory. With the victories, Riverside will travel to College of the Canyons for a four-team, double-elimination tournament. Canyons is the tournament's top seed.

Riverside rode sophomore pitcher Nichole Zink throughout the series. Zink, who collected her 21st victory over the season in the final game, allowed six hits in the final game, but got plenty of run and hit support as Natalie Barrios and Courtney Brown each hit home runs. Brown's three-run home run in the first staked Zink to an early 3-0 lead. Barrios' leadoff home run in the fifth started a two-run rally which resulted in the Tigers taking a 6-1 lead. Citrus got to Zink, who struck out two and walked three, in the sixth as the Owls scored three runs on Taylor Ward's three-run home run.

In the seventh, Citrus (25-17) threatened again as the Owls got a single and a walk with one out. After Katherine Cunningham groundout, moving the runners to second and third, Zink got a weak pop-up to Barrios at shortstop to end the game.

Riverside had its best game of the series offensively, collecting nine hits off Citrus starter Carissa Bender and Devin Dean. Brown finished with three hits as did Barrios.

RIVERSIDE FORCES WINNER TAKE ALL WITH 2-1 WIN

FASTPITCH WOMEN (5/6/2012)

News image

Citrus freshman pitcher Devin Dean has been nearly perfect in this Southern California Regional best two-out-of-three series with Riverside. Her lone mistake on Saturday in Game 2, however, cost her dearly. Her throwing error in the third inning allowed one run to score and eventually led to another run allowing the Tigers to escape with a 2-1 victory over Citrus, forcing a winner take-all third game in 30 minutes.

Dean, who allowed just one hit, fielded a come-backer from Chelsea Rossario. Dean turned to get Kylee Dattilo at second who opened the inning with an infield single. Dean, however, threw high and wide and the ball skipped past center fielder Angela Anguinaga, allowing Dattilo to score and sending Rossario to third. She would later score on a sacrifice fly by Natalie Barrios.

The two runs proved more than enough for Riverside starter Nichole Zink. She scattered four hits, striking out one, walking two and hitting two others. The victory was Zink's 20th this season. She worked out of jams in the first (hit batter and walk with no outs), the fourth (first and third) and the seventh when - with two outs - pinch runner Carmen Carrillo was thrown out at third base by left fielder Tylar Hyatt as she tried to go from first to third on a single by Lauren Vargas with two outs.

Citrus freshman pitcher Devin Dean pitched a complete-game, four-hitter as the Owls (25-15) opened the Southern California Regional best two-out-of-three series with a 2-1 victory over Riverside at the Evans Complex. The two teams will take to the field on Sunday, May 6 at 2 pm for the second game. Riverside (28-12) will need to win twice on Sunday to advance to the regional final tournament next weekend.

Dean struck out seven and walked three. She allowed two of her four hits in the second inning as the Tigers tied the game score 1-1. In the inning, Riverside got hits as Sarah Vasquez and Tylar Hyatt opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After Dean hit Ingrid Williams to load the bases, Vasquez scored on a ground out by Kylee Dattilo. Citrus wasted little time in getting Riverside pitcher Nichole Zink, the state's pitcher of the year, Zink, who allowed five hits, walked three batters, while striking out just four. One of those walks cost her in the first inning as Angela Anguinaga walked and eventually scored on Shyann Ramirez' single to centerfield.

Citrus broke the 1-1 deadlock in the fourth as Laura Vargas' single scored Taylor Ward, who had singled with one out.

Riverside, who left seven runners on base, got runners to second base in each of the fifth inning and a runner to third in the sixth inning, but couldn't push a run across. In the fifth Chelsea Rosario singled and was sacrificed to second, but Dean got Chelsea Crawley to strike out after Natalie Barrios had walked. In the sixth, Courtney Brown doubled to left center. Pinch runner Jazmine Carbajal was sacrificed to third, but Dean Hyatt to strike out and Williams to ground out.

TIGERS SCORED TWO UNEARNED RUNS IN SIXTH TO EDGE GOLDEN WEST, 6-4

FASTPITCH WOMEN (4/18/2012)

RIVERSIDE Taking advantage of an errant back pickoff attempt which allowed one run to score and set up another, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and posted a 6-4 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) victory over the visiting Golden West College (GWC) Rustlers Wednesday evening at the Evans Sports Complex (Brown Field).

Riverside (25-9, 16-4 OEC) opened the bottom of the sixth when freshman RF Kimberlee Bentley (Imperial / Central Union HS) drilled a comebacker toward GWC starting sophomore RHP Tanya Dowler (Anaheim / Savanna HS) for an infield single. Freshman pinch runner Jazmine Carbajal (Bloomington / Bloomington) went in to run for Bentley. Sophomore C Ingrid Williams (Riverside / Woodcrest Christian HS), who socked a two-run home run in the second inning (her third round tripper of the season), followed with a walk. With sophomore DP Kylee Dattilo at the plate, the GWC catcher fired the ball down to second base in an apparent back pickoff attempt upon Carbajal, but the ball eluded the fielder and rolled into center field as Carbajal scored and Williams raced to third. TWO UNEARNED FIRST-INNING RUNS ARE THE DIFFERENCE AS MT. SAN ANTONIO WINS, 3-1, AT RIVERSIDE

A dropped fly ball in right field with two outs in the first inning proved to be the difference as the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers dropped a 3-1 non-conference verdict to the visiting Mt. San Antonio College (MSAC) Mounties Friday evening at the Evans Sports Complex (Brown Field).

Riverside (21-9) retired the first two batters of the game and it looked like it would wriggle out of a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the top of the first inning, but a dropped fly ball in right field allowed two runners to score for a quick 2-0 MSAC lead.

Mt. San Antonio (23-3) loaded the bases in the first on a walk, a hit batter and a passed on a strikeout before MSAC sophomore RF Diana Gutierrez (Sonora HS) sent a routine fly ball that was dropped by RCC RF Taylor Connor (Mentone / East Valley HS) that permitted two runs to score.

RCC cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of fifth when sophomore C Ingrid Williams (Riverside / Woodside Christian HS) double to right-center field to lead off the frame. After a sacrifice bunt moved Williams to third, she scored on an infield error.

MSAC added an all-important insurance run in the sixth for the final margin.

MSAC starting sophomore RHP Ariel Whiteman (Bishop Amat HS) went the distance and allowed the one run (earned) on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Her counterpart, RCC sophomore RHP Nichole Zink (Corona / Roosevelt HS), also pitched seven full innings and allowed the three runs (one earned) on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Both teams resume conference play next week. MSAC will visit the Cerritos College Falcons in South Coast Conference play on Tuesday, Apr. 10, at 3 p.m. before RCC treks to play the Santa Ana College Dons in Orange Empire Conference action on Wednesday, Apr. 11, at 3 p.m.

SANTA ANA DELIVERS WALK-OFF

FASTPITCH WOMEN (3/16/2012)

For the fourth time in their last five games, the Dons had a game come down to the final inning. This time it was a 5-4 walk-off win over Riverside City in an Orange Empire Conference game.

In those four games, the Dons are 2-2 with their other walk-off win coming against Orange Coast. They followed that with a seventh inning loss at Golden West before Saddleback scored the game-winner in the seventh inning on Wednesday. Today's game, however, might have had the most drama after the Dons fell behind 4-0 in the fifth inning. Riverside (13-7, 7-3) scored a pair of runs in the first inning before getting one run across in the fourth and the fifth innings. That's when the Dons (14-8, 5-5) offense came alive. The late rally started in the fourth inning with a leadoff bunt-single by Cheyanne Tovar before Sonia Florido reached on an infield single.

Hannah Dowling then grounded out to advance both runners before Tovar was thrown out at home on Angelica Cesena's fielder's choice. Keila Tenorio followed with a two-run double, scoring Florido and Cesena to cut the Tigers lead to 4-2. Melissa Biddle then reached on an error, advancing Tenorio to third. Rachel Prentice, who came in to run for Biddle, was then caught in a rundown when attempting to steal second. After Prentice avoided the tag, the Tigers defense threw home but Tenorio beat the throw, making the score 4-3.

After each team stranded runners in the sixth inning, Kaitlyn Hooper made quick work of the Tigers in the seventh. She retired the side by inducing three ground balls on just four pitches to set up the Dons half of the seventh. Dowling led the frame off by flying out to right field before Cesena, representing the tying run, was hit by a pitch. Tenorio followed with a triple to right field that scored Cesena to tie the game at 4-4. Riverside then intentionally walked Prentice and Kristen Hooper to load the bases for Alexandra Perkins. After falling behind 1-2, Perkins hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Tenorio for the game-winning run.

Kaitlyn Hooper (11-6) pitched the entire game to pick up the win. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Nichole Zink (9-4) suffered the loss for Riverside in relief. Zink allowed two runs on one hit in 1.2 innings pitched.

"Viewpoints is a top-notch college newspapers and (associate professor of Journalism) Allan Lovelace does a tremendous job working with his students to put them in a position to pull off a project like this. In the end, this is a win-win, a win for our student-athletes and win for the students wanting a career in broadcast journalism."
