DISTRICT SETS ASIDE $5 MILLION FASTPITCH (9/20/2007) |
On September 11 the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees approved spending $5 million to build a new aquatics complex on the downtown Riverside campus. The expenditure, drawn from Measure C funds, will go toward the construction of a joint-use facility that includes a 65-meter Olympic quality pool that will be home to RCC water polo, swimming, and dive teams.
The planned aquatics complex, with an estimated cost of $14 million, is the result of a partnership between RCCD, the city of Riverside, the county of Riverside, and the RCCD Foundation. Construction is expected to begin by 2009. When completed, the new facility will provide a venue for water fitness education, youth aquatics instruction, and training and competition for RCC teams, local swim organizations such as the Riverside Aquettes, and the community. Popular programs such as the College for Kids swim classes will continue at the new aquatics complex.
In voting to approve the project funding, board member Virginia Blumenthal said, "This is the type of partnership that I love to see. Not only does it provide much needed 'water' for our young athletes who have had to travel outside the region to train and compete, but it brings the community on to the campus and gives people an opportunity to learn more about RCC."
The board's action follows a similar vote by the Riverside City Council in August, which approved the allocation of $3 million for the project and the development of a joint-use agreement between the city and the College District. Riverside County Supervisors John Tavaglione and Bob Buster recently pledged support over the next four years.
Blumenthal's comments were echoed by local businessman Ted Weggeland, who has agreed to chair the RCCD Foundation's effort to raise private support to complete construction and help cover ongoing operations. "RCC is the single best location for an aquatics facility that will benefit both the community and student athletes," Weggeland told the board. "The College has a great tradition of first-rate aquatics programs and of welcoming the community onto its campuses. The youth in our community deserve the very best aquatics facility we can build."
Plans for the aquatics complex include adding to the existing Cutter Pool building and swim and dive pools a 65-meter competition pool, which can be sectioned off to allow simultaneous multiple use. New locker rooms, coaches' offices, and grandstands will also be constructed, said Riverside City College interim president Dr. Linda Lacy. And the possibility of installing a photovoltaic system on the shade cover over the grandstands is being discussed with representatives of Riverside Public Utilities.
"The community recognizes the need for a facility of which we can all be proud," Weggeland said. "I'm confident that individuals and businesses will step forward with the necessary private support to complete what will be one of the premier aquatics complexes in California." |

ATHLETICS LAUNCHES STATE-OF-THE-ART WEBSITE FASTPITCH (7/23/2007) |
Riverside Community College District today unveiled its new state-of-the-art athletic website. The website uses the latest technology available in statistical gathering, video presentation and other features which will help promote Tiger student-athletes to four-year programs.
The site also allows the District to reach out to former Tigers by creating an alumni page where former student-athletes can register and keep in touch with one another.
"This was a huge undertaking by our Sports Information Office," said athletic director Barry Meier. "Our goal was not to only service our current student-athletes, but to reach out to our former players. We want this site to be inclusive to all of our players-both present, past and future."
Former players can register through the Alumni section. Meanwhile, future players can contact coaches through Become a Tiger.
"From the beginning our thoughts were centered on helping our student-athletes to move on through timely statistical posting and game stories," said Robert Schmidt, Sports Information Director. "But the further we got into the site, the more we realized how much more potential the site had to offer."
The site will give potential students the ability to find out not only about athletic teams, but athletic programs like the District's Athletic Training Program, the cheer program and physical education classes.
"I still think there are areas that can be enhanced," said Schmidt "and we will be looking at them as we begin the process to bring everything online." |

Frequently Asked Questions 1. Do the Cheer & Dance Teams cheer at School Sporting Events? Answer: Both the cheer & dance do cheer for Football and Basketball and any other events that the school requests. We also do performances for other school related events throughout the year. 2. How much does the team require? Answer: You will be required to be enrolled in the designated cheer and dance class/es through RCC every semester. These classes form your practices. Practice days and times will be determined at a later date, but typically practices are held in the late evening two nights a week. 3. Does the team compete? This selection process will occur throughout the season.
4. What are the requirements to make the RCC Dance Team? Answer: We are looking for dancers with formal technical training in jazz and ballet. We are also looking for students with Hip Hop experience. It would be in your best interest to have training in both dance formats. We would like to see a minimum of double pirouettes, turns in second, leg hold turns, and jumps in second. 5. What are the requirements to make the RCC Cheer Team? Answer: We are looking for cheerleaders with tumbling experience. We would love to see backhandsprings. Any tumbling skills above that i.e., standing back tucks, and round-off backhandspring tucks if a plus. If you do not have tumbling experience do not let that detour you. You will have the opportunity for additional tumbling classes throughout the season to achieve tumbling skills. We would like cheerleaders with stunting experience. 6. If you are not currently 18 years of age you will need an adult to come to sign your registration information. 7. When do you find out if you make the team? Answer: You will find out by the end of the audition. There will be cuts during the audition until the coaches feel they have the team they need for the upcoming season. There will be a short meeting after the final cut is made to discuss the upcoming season. 8. How are tryouts run? Answer: The tryouts are run like any audition. First cuts will be after motions and jumps. Then we will move to tumbling for cheer. The dancers will go across the floor like any Jazz class. After that there will be a cut. From that point you will be taught material and expected to perform said material in which there will be another cut until the final team is chosen. Tryouts are closed to spectators. 9. What do you wear for tryouts? Answer: Cheerleaders will wear workout wear, but remember you do want to make a good impression on the judges so please take your appearance into consideration. Dancers please wear form fitting outfits so the judges can see your body alignment and posture. They will be judging your knowledge of correct dance form. You also will want to present yourself in a positive manner so please be aware that your appearance is important. 10. What type of financial commitment is required of the RCC Team members? Answer: All team members are expected to pay a $600 fee. Veteran members that already own a uniform will pay a fee of $200. For new members, this fee can be divided into two payments.
