RIVERSIDE HOLDS OFF SANTA ANA FOOTBALL MEN (11/10/2007) |
Freshman quarterback Coy Glass ran for two touchdowns and passed for another two as Riverside heldoff Santa Ana, 32-26, in a Mission Conference National Divisional game at Wheelock Field.
With the victory, Riverside concludes the regular season 5-4 overall and 2-2 in divisional play. The Tigers' home game against Mt. San Antonio was cancelled due the the fires. Riverside was hoping to gain a berth to a bowl game, but its chances appear to be slim after both Citrus and Allan Hancock scored victories today. Both had been ahead of the Tigers in the regional poll, and it was figured one would have to lose to gain a berth in a post-season game.
Riverside last played in a bowl in 2005 against El Camino.
In the win against Santa Ana, Glass led the Tigers by passing for 211 yards, and scrambling for 29 yards. He scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards. His final touchdown run proved to be the game winner. Sophomore wide received Josh Pender caught both touchdown passes—27 and 51 yards. He finished with five catches for 107 yards. Glass finished with 16 completions on 25 attempts.
However, it was the defense which in the end made it all matter as the Tigers held Santa Ana on its final drive. The Dons (1-3, 3-5) had managed to get to the Riverside 24-yard line with just over a minute remaining, but sophomore Tyler Floyd intercepted Mark Iddins' pass in the end zone to secure the victory.
The California Community College Athletic Association will announce bowl match-ups and what eight teams qualified for the Southern California Regional playoffs on Sunday afternoon. Pairings can be found at www.coasports.org. |

RIVERSIDE FALLS TO PASADENA FOOTBALL MEN (11/3/2007) |
While his heralded teammates David Reed and David Pittman continued to assault the Pasadena City College football record books, fellow sophomore wide receiver Marcus Anderson quietly has gone about leading the Mission Conference in punt returns. There was nothing quiet about Anderson Saturday afternoon as the speedy 5-foot-7, 170-pounder put on a show in scoring four touchdowns in the Lancers' 35-17 National Division victory at PCC's Robinson Stadium.
PCC improved to 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the division as the Lancers rubber-stamped their first better-than-.500 season since 2002. Riverside fell to 4-4 and 1-2.
Anderson became the first PCC player to ever run back a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in the same game. He totaled 246 all-purpose yards, scoring on an 8-yard pass reception from Pittman and running back a Riverside punt 77 yards for a second TD just 90 seconds apart during the first quarter.
With Riverside leading 17-14 after two quarters, Anderson returned the second-half kickoff 88 yards for his third toucdown and a 21-17 PCC lead. He capped the day by pulling in a 16-yard TD pass from Pittman with 8:13 left in the game. He finished with six receptions and touched the ball just six other times on returns to inflict his damage on the visiting Tigers.
Meanwhile, Reed broke a 35-year-old record to become PCC's single-season reception yards leader by catching 10 passes for 83 yards. Reed now has 1,232 yards and 80 receptions (adding to that PCC record) to break the mark of 1,205 yards set in 1972 by Jesse Roberts. Reed also scored his team-leading ninth touchdown on a 1-yard loft pass by Pittman with 10 seconds left in the third quarter. Anderson also has nine TDs this year.
Pittman completed 30 of 40 attempts for 254 yards and three touchdowns. He also broke his own single-season passing record for most yards as his season total is at 2,823. Last season, it took Pittman 10 games to reach a new PCC passing record of 2,703 yards. This season, he did it in eight games. His 5,526 yards is far and away the most for a career by a Pasadena passer.
PCC freshman kicker Manny Santizo was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points and now is 9-for-9 with a field goal since taking over the placekicking duties after week 5.
Lancer sophomore linebacker Jason Scott had a team season-high 15 tackles in a dominating defensive performance. Scott had four tackles for loss yardage, including two of the team's eight sacks v. Riverside. Scott added a pass breakup and a hurry. Lineman Luavalu Sagapolutele added 1.5 sacks. Also making sacks were Kevin Guyton, Anthony Gonzalez, Timothy Faatea, Anthony Smith and Jeremiah Onosai.
PCC limited Riverside's rushing attack to 51 yards in 43 plays. Overall, the Lancers outgained the Tigers in total offense, 417-260. The Lancers were whistled for a season-low six penalties for just 63 yards.
Riverside was paced by quarterback Coy Glass, who completed 10 of 26 for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
The Lancers' rushing game added a new wrinkle as freshman running back Joshua Morgan led the team for the first time with 71 yards in 10 carries. Morgan broke off a 53-yard run in the first half. Freshman back Chris Douglas added 49 yards in 7 attempts.
Safety Terell Carr contributed two pass break-ups, three tackles and threw a punishing block that cleared the way for Anderson's final 15 yards on the punt return TD.
The Lancers ended a five-game losing streak against Riverside and improved their all-time series lead to 14-8-1.

DISTRICT SETS ASIDE $5 MILLION GENERAL NEWS (9/20/2007) |
On September 11 the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees approved spending $5 million to build a new aquatics complex on the downtown Riverside campus. The expenditure, drawn from Measure C funds, will go toward the construction of a joint-use facility that includes a 65-meter Olympic quality pool that will be home to RCC water polo, swimming, and dive teams.
The planned aquatics complex, with an estimated cost of $14 million, is the result of a partnership between RCCD, the city of Riverside, the county of Riverside, and the RCCD Foundation. Construction is expected to begin by 2009. When completed, the new facility will provide a venue for water fitness education, youth aquatics instruction, and training and competition for RCC teams, local swim organizations such as the Riverside Aquettes, and the community. Popular programs such as the College for Kids swim classes will continue at the new aquatics complex.
In voting to approve the project funding, board member Virginia Blumenthal said, "This is the type of partnership that I love to see. Not only does it provide much needed 'water' for our young athletes who have had to travel outside the region to train and compete, but it brings the community on to the campus and gives people an opportunity to learn more about RCC."
The board's action follows a similar vote by the Riverside City Council in August, which approved the allocation of $3 million for the project and the development of a joint-use agreement between the city and the College District. Riverside County Supervisors John Tavaglione and Bob Buster recently pledged support over the next four years.
Blumenthal's comments were echoed by local businessman Ted Weggeland, who has agreed to chair the RCCD Foundation's effort to raise private support to complete construction and help cover ongoing operations. "RCC is the single best location for an aquatics facility that will benefit both the community and student athletes," Weggeland told the board. "The College has a great tradition of first-rate aquatics programs and of welcoming the community onto its campuses. The youth in our community deserve the very best aquatics facility we can build."
Plans for the aquatics complex include adding to the existing Cutter Pool building and swim and dive pools a 65-meter competition pool, which can be sectioned off to allow simultaneous multiple use. New locker rooms, coaches' offices, and grandstands will also be constructed, said Riverside City College interim president Dr. Linda Lacy. And the possibility of installing a photovoltaic system on the shade cover over the grandstands is being discussed with representatives of Riverside Public Utilities.
"The community recognizes the need for a facility of which we can all be proud," Weggeland said. "I'm confident that individuals and businesses will step forward with the necessary private support to complete what will be one of the premier aquatics complexes in California." |

ATHLETICS LAUNCHES STATE-OF-THE-ART WEBSITE GENERAL NEWS (7/23/2007) |
Riverside Community College District today unveiled its new state-of-the-art athletic website. The website uses the latest technology available in statistical gathering, video presentation and other features which will help promote Tiger student-athletes to four-year programs.
The site also allows the District to reach out to former Tigers by creating an alumni page where former student-athletes can register and keep in touch with one another.
"This was a huge undertaking by our Sports Information Office," said athletic director Barry Meier. "Our goal was not to only service our current student-athletes, but to reach out to our former players. We want this site to be inclusive to all of our players-both present, past and future."
Former players can register through the Alumni section. Meanwhile, future players can contact coaches through Become a Tiger.
"From the beginning our thoughts were centered on helping our student-athletes to move on through timely statistical posting and game stories," said Robert Schmidt, Sports Information Director. "But the further we got into the site, the more we realized how much more potential the site had to offer."
The site will give potential students the ability to find out not only about athletic teams, but athletic programs like the District's Athletic Training Program, the cheer program and physical education classes.
"I still think there are areas that can be enhanced," said Schmidt "and we will be looking at them as we begin the process to bring everything online." |
