RIVERSIDE PLACES FOUR ON WOMEN'S ALL-OEC SOCCER TEAM

SOCCER WOMEN (11/18/2011)


Following its Orange Empire Conference Championship, Santiago Canyon received top honors on the All-Orange Empire Conference Team. Freshman midfielder Bianca Frontino was named the OEC Most Valuable Player after scoring all nine of her goals on the season in OEC play. She also added nine assists during conference competition while recording 10 helpers on the season.

Coach of the Year honors went Golden West College's Raul Ruiz after he led the Rustlers to a fourth place finish with a 6-7-3 record in the conference. On the season, Golden West finished 8-10-3 overall, just a year after finishing 3-17-1 overall and 2-14-0 in conference.

Joining Frontino on the All-OEC list as representatives of the conference champions were first teamers Valerie Barrios, Monique Cherry, Janelle Hanna and Jennifer Martin. Representing the Hawks on the second team were Annie Brodzki, Crystal Mena, Amanda Scheatzle and Dena Wasielewski.

Representing second place Cypress College on the first team was Megan Ollar, Kayla Neujhar and Anisa Mahram. The Chargers also placed Samantha Rice and Kayla Arenas on the second team.

From third place Orange Coast College was Jessica Parker, Emma Pridmore and Jessica Amaral on the first team while Caitlin Padian, Nicole Vanderlaan and Kiley Leshin received second team honors.

Candice Holt and Katie Fosmire represented Golden West College on the first team with teammates Katy Swart and Cindy Torres on the second team. Following them from Riverside were Alyssa Mendibles and Yesenia Garcia on the first team with Jordin Crosby and Denise Zavala on the second team.

Brittany Solis and Yesenia Fonseca landed on the first team for Santa Ana College with Traci Kelley and Dania Gonzalez being named second team. Fullerton College placed Nadia Ruiz and Stephanie Castillo on the first Team and Jazmin Diaz and Andrea Torres on the second team.

Saddleback College was represented by Bailey Marquez and Kaelyn Kaichi on the first team with Valerie Hlozek and Phaedra Lujano on the second team. Finally, Irvine Valley College had Stephanie Horwitz named first team and Madison Lamont named second team.

TWO-SECOND HALF GOALS PROPELL TIGERS TO WIN

SOCCER WOMEN (11/8/2011)


Riverside women's soccer team scored in the 62nd and the 83rd minute as the Tigers rallied for a 2-1 victory over host Irvine Valley in an Orange Empire Conference match. The victory snapped a two-match losing streak for the Tigers and put an end to a scoreless streak that had last three and a half games.

Trailing 1-0 after halftime, Riverside was awarded a penalty kick in the 62nd minute after Yesenia Garcia was taken down in the box. Yesenia converted the penalty, beating the Lasers' freshman goalie Amanda Rashtian with a shot to the lower left corner. Irvine Valley played the final 24 minutes with 10 players as in the 66th minute Irvine Valley had a player given a red card. Riverside (8-9-3, 5-9-1) used the man advantage when, with seven minutes to play, Kayla Cates headed in a cross from Alyssa Mendibles.

Riverside finishes the regular season on Friday at Orange Coast in Costa Mesa. Match time is 1 pm.

CYPRESS SHUTSOUT RIVERSIDE, 3-0, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER MATCH

Riverside women's soccer team failed to score for the third consecutive match as the Tigers fell 3-0 to Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference match at soccer facility at Norco College. The loss was Riverside's second consecutive.

The Tigers have two matches remaining in their 2011 season - both on the road. Riverside will travel to Irvine on Tuesday to take on the Lasers of Irvine Valley at 3 pm then close out the season on Friday, November 11 with a 1 pm match with Orange Coast.

Riverside needs to win both matches to finish at .500 this season. Currently they Tigers stand at 7-9-3 overall.

In the loss to Cypress, Riverside gave up two quick goals as the Chargers scored in the 5th and 9th minutes of the match. The Tigers lost the services of goalie Jordin Crosby when she had to leave the game with a split ear, which required five stitches. She managed to play the second half, finishing with six saves, but Cypress beat her for three goals.

LATE GOAL DOOMS WOMEN'S SOCCER IN LOSS TO SADDLEBACK

Riverside women's soccer team have a goal in the 85th minute as the Tigers fell to Saddleback, 2-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match in Mission Viejo.

After a scoreless first half, Saddleback struck first in the 76th minute with a corner kick. Riverside, however, answered quickly scoring in the 79th minute as Amber Guerena scored her second goal of the season, tying the match 1-1.

After giving up what turned out to the the tying goal, Riverside had a chance to tie the match in stoppage play, but the Tigers missed a wide-open net from 20 yards out.

Riverside returns home on Friday to take on Santa Ana at 3 pm at the soccer complex at the Norco College campus.

GOAL SIX MINUTES IN STANDS UP AS TIGERS BEAT FULLERTON

SOCCER WOMEN (10/14/2011)


Riverside scored six minutes into the match as Alyssa Mendibles found Amber Guerena as the Tigers managed a 1-0 victory over host Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference match.

Riverside goalie Jordin Crosby made the goal stand up as she posted five saves. The closest Fullerton came to scoring in the match was in the first half when the Hornets got behind Crosby and fired a 10-yard shot. Riverside defender Gabi Vasquez, however, managed to sprint to goal and cleared the ball as she slid near the goal line.

In the second half the match turned physical as Fullerton picked up five yellow cards. Riverside was cited once.

The Tigers, who have a bye on Tuesday, host Golden West on Friday, October 21 at Norco College at 3 pm.

WOMEN'S SOCCER STOPS DRY SPELL WITH 3-1 WIN

Having scored just one goal in the their last two matches - both losses - Riverside women's soccer tied its team high with three goals in a 3-1 victory over Irvine Valley in an Orange Empire Conference match in Norco.

Riverside scored in the ninth minute of the match on a goal by sophomore Yesenia Garcia off a pass from freshman Amber Guerena. It was quiet until the 89th minute when Irvine Valley tied the match 1-1. Riverside, however, responded quickly as the Tigers took the kickoff up the middle and the Lasers committed a foul, which resulted in a free kick which sophomore Denise Zavala buried in the back of the net. Less than a minute later - in extra time - Guerena found sophomore Alyssa Mendibles all alone for the final goal.

Riverside remains home, hosting Orange Coast at 3 pm on Tuesday, October 11.

WITH CROSBY OUT, RIVERSIDE NO MATCH FOR CYPRESS

SOCCER WOMEN (10/4/2011)


Playing without sophomore goalie Jordin Crosby, Riverside struggled to keep Cypress out of the net as the Chargers downed Riverside 4-0 in an Orange Empire Conference match in Cypress.

The loss drops Riverside to 2-4 in conference and 4-5-2 overall. Crosby is out of the week after suffering a concussion in a loss last week. She's expected to miss Friday's home match against Irvine Valley as well.

Sophomore Kayla Cates (Norco High School) stepped into goal for the Cypress match, but against one of the best offensive units in Southern California she had her hands full from the outset. Cypress scored just 22 minutes into the match, and after the intermission added a goal in the 65th minute on a corner kick. From there it was downhill, said head coach Lynsey Jalayer.

"Mentally, going down two goals, killed us," she said.

Riverside, which was playing without five starters, went on to surrender to two more late goals. Many of the missing starters won't return until at least next week, said Jalayer.

WOMEN'S SOCCER LOSE MATCH, CROSBY

SOCCER WOMEN (10/1/2011)


Riverside women's soccer team fell to 2-2-0 in Orange Empire Conference play and 4-4-2 overall after dropping a 3-1 Orange Empire Conference match to host Santiago Canyon.

Crosby, a sophomore, will be lost for at least a week after she was "blind-sided" by a Santiago player who knocked her down and recovered the loose ball, scoring the Hawks' final goal. Crosby, who was blooded by the collision, suffered a concussion and has been told to take at least the next week off.

Santiago also scored another controversial goal in the 34th minute when the Hawks scored on ball that hit the "c-post" and rebounded back into play.

"The linesman was out of position," said head coach Lynsey Jalayer. "he ruled the ball cross the line, but it clearly didn't."

Riverside's lone goal came in the 22nd minute when Ashley Felton scored, tying the game 1-1. The Tigers managed just one more shot on goal in the half and couldn't muster any offense in the second fall, failing to take a shot on goal.


GOALS BY ZAVALA, MENDIBLES PACE RIVERSIDE

Riverside's Denise Zavala goal in the second half broke a 1-1 tie as the Tigers edged visiting Santa Ana, 2-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match at Santa Ana.

Zavala's goal came on a free kick int he 65th minute. Alyssa Mendibles had given the Tigers (2-2, 4-3-2) and early 1-0 lead when she beat the Santa Ana goalie off a pass from Yesenia Garcia in the first half. Santa Ana tied the match just seconds before the end of the first half on a penalty kick.

Riverside remains on the road as the Tigers visit first-place Santiago Canyon on Friday at 3 pm.

WOMEN'S SOCCER SCORES A CONFERENCE WIN

SOCCER WOMEN (9/21/2011)


Riverside women's soccer team scored a 3-1 victory over Golden West in an Orange Empire Conference match in Huntington Beach. The win improved the Tigers' record to 1-0-1 in conference play and 3-2-2 overall headed into Friday's match against Saddleback at 3 pm at the Norco College soccer complex.

Riverside got on the board quick, scoring 10 minutes in on a penalty kick by Yesenia Garcia. Golden West tied the match in the 37th minute, but Riverside scored nine minutes later on a free kick by Denise Zavala and put the match away in the 54th minute when Alyssa Mendibles fed Jennifer Caceres for a goal.

Tiger goalie Jordin Crosby stopped 15 of 16 shots on the goal.

WOMEN'S SOCCER OVERCOMES WIND TO NOTCH A TIE

Playing into the wind in the first half, Riverside rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to tie Victor Valley 2-2 in a non-conference match in Victorville.

Victor Valley scored back-to-back goals in the 30th and 35th-minute as the Tigers (2-2-2) struggled moving the ball down field. With the end change in the second half, Riverside was able to muster and offensive attack. The Tigers scored in the 68th minute as Ashley Felton knocked home a rebound off a Denise Zavala shot on goal. Then in the 85th minute, Zavala found the net on a free kick just out of the box.

Riverside goalie Jordin Crosby, who had 10 saves in the first half, finished with 12 overall.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND VIEWPOINTS LAUNCHES TIGER TV

The Riverside athletic department, in conjunction with Viewpionts, the District's on-campus newspaper, has launched Tiger TV.

James Martinez, Matt Dziak and Javier Cabrera, editor in chief of Viewpoints, will cover Tiger athletics from the sidelines to the locker room, giving Tiger fans an inside look at the week's happenings.

There will be post-game interviews as well as a weekly wrap up and highlights from all 19 athletic teams during the 2011-12 season.

"We're excited about Tiger TV," said Athletic Director Barry Meier. "It will be another way for us to keep the community involved in the 19 athletic programs and the student-athletes who work so hard - in the classroom and on the field.

"Viewpoints is a top-notch college newspapers and (associate professor of Journalism) Allan Lovelace does a tremendous job working with his students to put them in a position to pull off a project like this. In the end, this is a win-win, a win for our student-athletes and win for the students wanting a career in broadcast journalism."

RIVERSIDE FALL'S IN FIRST CONFERENCE GAME

SOCCER WOMEN (9/13/2011)


Riverside women's soccer team suffered a tough loss in its first conference game of the year as Fullerton scored the tie-breaking goal in the 73rd minute when Madisen Winder was able to break through Riversides defense and put away the game winning goal.

Riverside went down in the first half as Jazmin Diaz was able to beat Jordin Crosby and take a 1-0 lead for Fullerton. but Riverside was able to answer back in the opening minutes of the second half with a quick goal by Alyssa Mendibles that came 7 minutes in to the second half.

The loss drops Riverside to a 2-2-1 record and a 0-1-0 conference record for the season. Riverside begins a two-match road trip with matches at Victor Vally (Friday, Sept. 16) and Golden West (Tuesday, Sept. 20). The matches begin at 2 and 3 pm respectively.

WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO MOORPARK ON LATE GOALS

Riverside and Moorpark battled for 78 minutes before the Raiders were able to get pass the Tigers' defense and eventually get one pass sophomore goalie keeper Jordin Crosby. Moorpark added another goal in stoppage time taking a 2-0 non-conference win.

Crosby made 13 saves in the loss.

The loss drops Riverside to 1-1-1 on the season headed into Friday's (Sept. 9) match at home against Mt San Jacinto. The match begins at 4 pm.

WOMEN'S SOCCER WINS ON LATE PENALTY KICK

Riverside's Crystal Patterson was fouled with four minutes remaining in the match giving the Tigers a penalty shot which sophomore Caitlin Crouse converted sending Riverside to a 1-0 victory over Santa Monica in a non-conference match.

The win moves Riverside to 1-0-1 on the season headed into Tuesday's (Sept. 6) match at home against Moorpark. The match begins at 2 pm.

WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS SEASON WITH A 1-1 TIE

Riverside women's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a 1-1 tie against Cochise College of Arizona. The Tigers' lone goal came from freshman Caitlin Crouse, who scored in the 11th minute. Riverside managed five shots on goal.

Cochise managed to tie the match in the 65th minute on a penalty kick by Ellyn Dunn. The Apaches are 0-2-1 on the season headed into its match Wednesday against Palomar College. The Tigers return to action on Friday when they travel to Santa Monica for a 6 pm match.

Community Education Football Offense/Defense Class

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Football Fundamentals (KIN-A60/A61 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course provides the student an opportunity to learn general and specific individual defensive and offensive football fundamental techniques and strategies, emphasizing active participation in the game of football. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 3. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the football practice field. Students should come in proper football attire, which includes shorts and cleats. Cost is $36, please bring exact change. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Tom Craft.

Community Education Out of Season (Basketball) Conditioning Class

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Out of Season Basketball Conditioning Class (KIN-A95 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course applies advanced conditioning and weight training principles for an out-of-season training program for varsity sport competition. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 17. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm in Wheelock Gym, on Monday through Friday with the end date being June 7.
