ÂMen's 100-yard Freestyle Henry Chung, Ventura, 44.44 Chung, a freshman, picked up his third event victory, racing all 4s across as he comfortably defeated Santa RosaaaâÂs Trent Williams (45.84). ChungggâÂs mark fell .40 short of the state record.
ÂWomen's 100-yard Breaststroke Lisa Boozer, Diablo Valley, 1:04.88 After losing to teammate Shaila Yoder in the 50-breaststroke, Boozer, who won both events last year, became a repeat champion in the 100 sprint. She fought off the talented freshman, holding on to a .49 second victory.
****Men's 200-yard Breaststroke New State Meet Record--Jeff Lum, Santa Monica, 1:59.35 As if they were playing a game of anything you can do, I can do better, Lum set his third state meet record in two years and captured his sixth event crown less than an hour after teammate Mathlouthi set his third state meet record in winning the mile race. Lum smashed the 200 breaststroke record set just last year by Cerritos swimmer PJ Gabayeron (2:00.24). In 2011-2012, the SMC pair combined for nine event victories and six state meet records at the ELAC pool.
ÂWomen's 100-yard Butterfly Alexandria Holland, Santa Rosa, 57.06 Orange CoastttâÂs Mackenzie Bailie held a strong lead after 50 yards, but HollandddâÂs hard-fought second 50 scored her a second state meet event win in the 100 fly. ANTONISSEN WINS SECOND STATE TITLE, WINNING THE 200 FREE SWIMMING AND DIVING WOMEN (4/27/2012) |
Update after Day 2 of the CCCAA Swim Championships as written by Robert Lewis, CCCAA Sports Information, CCCSIA executive board, and Pasadena City College sports information director.
FIVE STATE RECORDS SHATTERED FRIDAY
WOMEN-Diablo Valley College has taken the lead over defending state champ Orange Coast, 321.5 to 313 points after the second day of the State Meet. Golden West is in third with 241.5 points, Ventura in fourth at 198.5, and Sierra holds fifth with 193.
MEN-North region Santa Rosa lengthened its lead in the mennâs team standings with a whopping 451 points, 155 ahead of second place Palomar through the second day of the CCCAA Championships. Grossmont stands in third with 209, Orange Coast in fourth at 193, and Ventura is in fifth with 190.
DAY 2, 2012 STATE EVENT CHAMPIONS Event 13-Women's 200-yard Medley Relay Diablo Valley (Courtney Leonard, Lisa Boozer, Hannah Voegtly, Taylor Henry), 1:48.02 DVC jumped out to the lead in the first 50 and maintained it throughout as it opened Day 2 competition with a solid relay victory.
***Event 14-Men's 200-yard Medley Relay New State Record--Santa Rosa (Sean Malley, John Bing, Trent Williams, Nolan Stimple) 1:29.99 SRJC started the ball rolling in the state record department by shattering a 14-year-old mark in winning the 200 medley relay. The Bear Cubs obliterated the old mark of 1:32.12 (Golden West, 1998) by 2.13 seconds.
Event 15-Women's 200-yard Individual Medley Alexandria Holland, Santa Rosa, 2:07.07 Holland, a freshman, won her second event of the meet, outdueling Jade Morton of Golden West (2:08.96). Holland won the 50 butterfly earlier on Thursday.
Event 16-Men's 400-yard Individual Medley Michael Kim, Orange Coast, 4:02.86 The freshman Kim held off prelim top seed Tom Bruce of Grossmont to win the 400 IM by 1.12 seconds.
Event 17-Women's 50-yard Butterfly Mackenzie Bailie, Orange Coast, 25.28 Bailie, a freshman for the Pirates, challenged the state record, but fell a bit short, winning the 50 fly sprint just .11 off the state record. Katie Elam (Merced) and Taylor Henry (Diablo Valley) tied for second at 26.05.
Event 18-Men's 100-yard Butterfly Trent Williams, Santa Rosa, 49.26 After participating in a state record relay earlier, Williams picked up the event win here as he hit the finish wall just moments before second-place finisher Ashkaun Hami of Orange Coast. The margin of victory was just .47 of a second.
Event 19-Women's 200-yard Freestyle Andrea Antonissen, Riverside, 1:54.37 Antonissen, a Tigers sophomore, proved sheeâs as quick in the longer freestyle as she was in winning the 50 sprint on Thursday. In yet another close finish, she beat out runner-up Miya Oto (San Mateo) by just .58 of a second. Antonissennâs slower prelim mark (1:57.39) was deceptive as she won the final while swimming in lane 1.
Event 20-Men's 200-yard Freestyle **New State Record--Ahmed Mathlouthi, Santa Monica, 1:35.29 One day after wiping out the 500 freestyle state record, the talented freshman Mathlouthi shattered yet another record in winning the 200 free. His winning time was 1.79 seconds faster than the 2009 mark set by Riki Yano of Orange Coast. Grossmont's Michael Cohn took second, nearly six full seconds behind the swift Corsair.
Event 21-Womennâs 50-yard Breaststroke Shaila Yoder, Diablo Valley, 29.81 DVC swimmers went 1 and 2 in this sprint as Yoder came valiantly short of matching the state meet record (just .10 behind) and needed every bit of her blistering swim to defeat teammate Lisa Boozer at 30.15.
***Event 22-Men's 100-yard Breaststroke New State Record-Jeff Lum, Santa Monica, 54.48 Ittâs been a historic meet for Santa Monica as the Corsairs now can boast two different swimmers with a pair of state meet records. Lum scored his second state record (he set the 200 IM mark last year) with an explosive mark that beat the old mark by .70 of a second. Seemingly upstaged by teammate Mathlouthi and his two meet records just in the past two days, Lum made sure people realize that heeâs hardly a slouch with now five gold medals at the East LA Swim Stadium in the past two seasons. Mt. San Antonio's Taylor Kneisley challenged Lum in the opening 50, but his swift 55.52 was not enough to overtake the SMC letterman.
Event 23-Women's 50-yard Backstroke Julianne Allison, Santa Monica, 27.80 In the closest race of the evening, the freshman Allison beat Riverside's Kamaehu Alboro by a finger tip as Alboro took second with a 27.89 mark.
***Event 244â- 100-yard Backstroke New State Record-Henry Chung, Ventura, 48.53 There's something about the ELAC indoor pool that continues to bring out the best of the top swimmers. Chung, Venturaaâs freshman sensation, shattered his own state record in less than 24 hours by winning the 100 back. Chung had set a 48.80 record on the opening leg of the 400 medley relay on Thursday. In Chung's Thursday win in the 50 freestyle, he swam the second fastest California Community College time ever at 20 seconds flat. It was an amazing fifth overall state record set for the day (see diving below), sixth of the meet, and 11th record shattered in 2011-2012 combined.
Event 25-Women's 800-yard Freestyle Relay Ventura (Abby Puczkowski, Taylor Amstutz, Jessie Ball, Christina Robledo), 7:50.00 The Pirates foursome trailed Golden West early, but picked up steam to roll to a 2.27 seconds win in the long freestyle relay.
Event 26-Mennâs 800-yard Freestyle Relay Palomar (Kevin Reichel, Misaki Onoue, Wyatt Woodward, Kody Moffat), 6:47.66 Despite the presence of Lum and Mathlouthi, Santa Monica's monster pair, Palomar proved to have the best four in this relay race as the Comets outraced the SMC squad by nearly two seconds.
Event 27-Women's 3-Meter Diving Paige Lampert, Sierra, 232.20 points Lampert, a freshman, outscored second-place Megan Morse (217.40) of Cypress to take the 3-meter competition title.
****Event 28-Men's 1-Meter Diving New State Record-Nicolas Suissa, Santa Rosa, 286.60 points During the prelims session, Suissa set a new state standard in the 1-meter dive only a year after American River's Eddie Kollar established a record in 2011 (held at Pasadena) with 285.20 points. It was a sweep of the diving golds for Suissa.
The CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will hold prelims for Day 3 Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. and the finals at 4 p.m. |

Riverside City women's swim team broke four Golden West Invitational records at last weekend's event. The Tigers also had two swimmers, Ashley Antoniseen and Kamaehu Alboro win two individual events at the invitational.
The 200 free relay team (Danielle Pedroso, Alboro, Allison Arch and Andrea Antonissen) shaved over two and half seconds off the previous record with a 1:43.78 time. The record bettered a 2011 mark by a Riverside team. Andrea Antonissen swam the final leg in a blistering 23.97 seconds to capture the win over Golden West. The same four girls teamed up for the 200 medley relay and it produced the same result as they broke Cerritos' 2010 record with a 1:57.58 time, 3.21 seconds faster than the previous record. Arch's final leg time of 26.99 pushed the Tigers to the record as she was the only swimmer of the group to finish under 27 seconds.
In the 400 medley relay, Alboro, Pedroso, Ashley Fedler and Andrea Antonissen shattered the invitational previous record mark (4:24.52), set in 2010 by Cerritos. Thanks to final leg of 53.68 by Andrea Antonissen, the only leg swam by the team under a minute, the Tigers finished in a time of 4:17.79, nearly five seconds faster than the previous record. Riverside then broke its fourth relay record of the meet in the 400 free as Pedroso, Arch, Alboro and Andrea Antonissen teamed up to swim 3:49.78, breaking the old record of 3:53.34, which was held by Riverside's 2011 relay team. Alboro found enough in the tank to claim the 100 backstroke, finishing in a time of 1:02.59, over three seconds faster than the second-place finisher, yet .53 seconds slower than her time last year which set the event's record. However, she made up for it in the 50 backstroke as she swam a 28.52 to set a new invitational record.
Not to be outdone by her sister, Andrea, Ashley Antonissen captured two individual titles, winning the 50 free in 25.16. Earlier in the day in her preliminary event, Ashley posted a 24.15 timing which set a new meet record. She then followed it up with a 55.63 clocking and a first-place finish in the 100 free.
