GLASSEY ADVANCES TO STATE FINALS TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (5/4/2008) |
One final, one Riverside athlete moving on.
Riverside sophomore Casey Glassey placed sixth in the Southern California Regional 10,000 meter final on Saturday earning the right to compete at the state finals later this month. Glassey finished in 40:16.3, a new personal best mark. Her time is the ninth fastest in the programmmââs history. She managed to claim the final automatic spot for the finals by finishing in sixth place.
"Casey did a great job of finding great position in the race and maintaining the pace to stay with the chase group," said head coach Mike Barbee. "Her early commitment to remain in the top six proved enough, as the next racer was never able to catch her."
Teammate Gaby Del Toro finished 24 seconds behind Glassey in eighth position. Her finishing time equaled her time in the conference finals, but more importantly netted the Tigers a point in the race for the regional championship.
According to Barbee the remainder of the races went as predicted as the Tigers qualified an athlete in every race. The regional finals are this Saturday at Bakersfield College.
"The sprinters we able to advance without having to run their personal best times," said Barbee. "Arianna Celis needed to run her best time by almost two seconds to advance into next weekkkââs finals, and that is exactly what she did."
In the field events, the Tigers showed their strength in the hammer throw as Renee Espinoza, Ashley Mercado and Brittiney McGhee all advanced to the finals. Jasmine Peggese came through with another personal-best mark to advance in the discus. In the shot put, McGhee threw far enough to advance. Karee Nordby continued her momentum in the javelin with a season best and eleventh best mark in school history with a 124-2 effort.
Triple jumpers Tiana Wills and Jasmine Seymour advanced to the finals, with Wills also advancing in the long jump.
The relay teams of Brittany Manuel, Djquara Jackson, Sharayza Jackson and Moriah Jubrey ran the second fastest qualifying times of the day. Both relay teams are chasing West LA College.
"The last Southern California Regional ranking put us tied for 5th place," said Barbee "I feel we've certainly advanced enough athletes into the finals to make a run at the top 5."

DISTRICT SETS ASIDE $5 MILLION GENERAL NEWS (9/20/2007) |
On September 11 the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees approved spending $5 million to build a new aquatics complex on the downtown Riverside campus. The expenditure, drawn from Measure C funds, will go toward the construction of a joint-use facility that includes a 65-meter Olympic quality pool that will be home to RCC water polo, swimming, and dive teams.
The planned aquatics complex, with an estimated cost of $14 million, is the result of a partnership between RCCD, the city of Riverside, the county of Riverside, and the RCCD Foundation. Construction is expected to begin by 2009. When completed, the new facility will provide a venue for water fitness education, youth aquatics instruction, and training and competition for RCC teams, local swim organizations such as the Riverside Aquettes, and the community. Popular programs such as the College for Kids swim classes will continue at the new aquatics complex.
In voting to approve the project funding, board member Virginia Blumenthal said, "This is the type of partnership that I love to see. Not only does it provide much needed 'water' for our young athletes who have had to travel outside the region to train and compete, but it brings the community on to the campus and gives people an opportunity to learn more about RCC."
The board's action follows a similar vote by the Riverside City Council in August, which approved the allocation of $3 million for the project and the development of a joint-use agreement between the city and the College District. Riverside County Supervisors John Tavaglione and Bob Buster recently pledged support over the next four years.
Blumenthal's comments were echoed by local businessman Ted Weggeland, who has agreed to chair the RCCD Foundation's effort to raise private support to complete construction and help cover ongoing operations. "RCC is the single best location for an aquatics facility that will benefit both the community and student athletes," Weggeland told the board. "The College has a great tradition of first-rate aquatics programs and of welcoming the community onto its campuses. The youth in our community deserve the very best aquatics facility we can build."
Plans for the aquatics complex include adding to the existing Cutter Pool building and swim and dive pools a 65-meter competition pool, which can be sectioned off to allow simultaneous multiple use. New locker rooms, coaches' offices, and grandstands will also be constructed, said Riverside City College interim president Dr. Linda Lacy. And the possibility of installing a photovoltaic system on the shade cover over the grandstands is being discussed with representatives of Riverside Public Utilities.
"The community recognizes the need for a facility of which we can all be proud," Weggeland said. "I'm confident that individuals and businesses will step forward with the necessary private support to complete what will be one of the premier aquatics complexes in California." |

Five of his gold medals came in international competition, which includes stops in Barcelona, Spain, Austria, France and Cape Town, Africa.
Bushman represented the United States in Senior Davis Cup competition, reaching No. 1 ranking in his age division.
As a young athlete in the Inland Empire, Mr. Bushman played in summer baseball leagues against Jackie Robinson and Ewell Blackwell, two future baseball greats. Bushman went on to play baseball at the University of Santa Barbara, and earned all-league honors.

ATHLETICS LAUNCHES STATE-OF-THE-ART WEBSITE GENERAL NEWS (7/23/2007) |
Riverside Community College District today unveiled its new state-of-the-art athletic website. The website uses the latest technology available in statistical gathering, video presentation and other features which will help promote Tiger student-athletes to four-year programs.
The site also allows the District to reach out to former Tigers by creating an alumni page where former student-athletes can register and keep in touch with one another.
"This was a huge undertaking by our Sports Information Office," said athletic director Barry Meier. "Our goal was not to only service our current student-athletes, but to reach out to our former players. We want this site to be inclusive to all of our players-both present, past and future."
Former players can register through the Alumni section. Meanwhile, future players can contact coaches through Become a Tiger.
"From the beginning our thoughts were centered on helping our student-athletes to move on through timely statistical posting and game stories," said Robert Schmidt, Sports Information Director. "But the further we got into the site, the more we realized how much more potential the site had to offer."
The site will give potential students the ability to find out not only about athletic teams, but athletic programs like the District's Athletic Training Program, the cheer program and physical education classes.
"I still think there are areas that can be enhanced," said Schmidt "and we will be looking at them as we begin the process to bring everything online." |
