WOMEN'S TRACK HAS STRONG SHOWING AT INVITATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (3/6/2010) |
Riverside had a strong showing at the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton, led by its relay squads. Riverside's 4x100 relay posted a season-best 48.50, good for fifth place and the 4x400 relay team posted a 4:05.08 for a sixth-place finish.
Individually, Vivian Ibewiro made an impression on the four-year coaches finishing third in the long jump with a 17-6.75 mark. Only UC Santa Barbara's Tamara Thomas and Veronica Gines had better marks as they tied for first place with 17-9 jumps. Ibewiro also competed in the 100-meter hurdles where she finished 13th in a time of 15.81, a season-best mark.
In running events, Riverside had a couple Top 10 finishers as Casey Candelaria finished fifth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:17.67, 2.5 seconds off the time for the winner - Justine Diaz of UC Santa Barbara. In the 1500 meters, Adrianna Davidek was ninth in a time of 4:54.26, a season best for her.

RIVERSIDE ROLLS TO EASY WIN OVER SADDLEABCK TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (2/26/2010) |
Riverside women's track and field team posted a 111-22 victory over Saddleback in an Orange Empire Conference dual meet at Wheelock Field.
Jazmine Weatherspoon typified the day that Riverside had. She won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash and helped the 4x400 relay team to a victory. He times in the 100 and 200 meters were conference-best times. Ironically, Kierra Auguster also posted a conference-best time, but she finished second to Weatherspoon in the 100 meters.
Jessica Reeder continues to improve from week to week as she won the 400-meter hurdle event with a time slightly faster than her last meet clocking. Currently, she has the second fastest time in Southern California in the event.
The two-team dual meet also served as Tamika Cornell's coming out event as the freshman from North High School won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.89 and ran a leg on both winning relays.
In field events, Riverside also cleaned up as Tanya Martinez was a double winner in the discus and shot put, while Ana Latu took a victory in the hammer throw.
The Tigers travel to Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Saturday (March 5 & 6) for the Ben Brown Invitational. The Invitational features teams from four-year colleges and universities as well as community colleges.

RIVERSIDE SETS TWO RECORDS AT CERRITOS EVENT TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (2/20/2010) |
Riverside women's track team set two school relay records at the Cerritos Invitational, which was what head coach Mike Barbee had in mind when he boarded the bus to Norwalk.
"We went to Cerritos with the intention of concentrating on relays," said Barbee. "We wanted to see how we stacked up."
How the Tigers stacked up was on top.
The distance medley relay team of Casey Candelaria, Brenda Perez, Adrianna Davidek and Katherine Gomez set the school record with a time of 12 minutes 43 seconds, eclipsing the old record by four seconds, which was set last season at the same meet. They finished second to Glendale in the event. Not to be out done, the 4x200 relay team - Tamika Cornell, Zina Bascom, Kierra Auguster and Jessica Reeder - set a school mark with a 1:43.00 time. They won the event by nearly a three-second advantage.
In the 4x800 relay, Riverside entered two teams. The team of Tiffany Akaniro, Katherine Gomez, Pilar Gamboa and Candelaria won with a time of 10 minutes, 1 second. Ironically, the team they edged out was the Tigers' other team of Perez, Davidek, Astyne Price and Larissa Davis, which finished two seconds behind. Both of these times put them in the top 5 in school history.
The sprint medley team of Bascom, Auguster, Cornell and Reeder placed second to host Cerritos with a time of 1 minute 52 seconds, placing them fifth all-time at RCC.
A big draw of the Cerritos Invitational is the field events as well. And, again, Riverside's student-athletes excelled as Samantha Gutierrez won the discus with a toss of 143-feet, 10-inches - a full foot further than her best mark last year at the state finals where she placed eighth. She also placed second in the javelin with a 118-feet, 1-inch throw. She also finished fourth in the hammer. Also sophomore Vivian Ibewiro won the triple jump event.
On the track, Ibewiro placed third in the 100-meter hurdles and Cornell was fifth in the same event.
Riverside returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 24) when the Tigers host Cal State Long Beach in a non-scoring event at 2 p.m. Then on Friday (Feb. 26) host Saddleback in a conference dual meet.

Riverside won every event, but three. Some of the Tigers' wins in the running events were by good margin. For instance, in the 100 meters Zina Bascom won in a time of 12.90, 1.64 seconds better than the second-place finisher. In the 200 meters, Brenda Perez dominated the field, finishing in a time of 28.99. In the 800-meter run, Riverside's Casey Candelario finished in 2:22.29 - more than eight seconds faster then the second-place finisher.
In the 400 meters, Riverside runners Astyne Prince and Tiffany Akaniro put on the day's best battle as the two finished .24 apart with Prince edging Akaniro at the finish line. In the 1500-meter event, Riverside's Katherine Gomez bettered the field by almost nine seconds with her 5:07.60 finish. Rebekah Failey won the 3000-meter run by nearly five seconds over the next finisher.
Jessica Roeder swept the hurdle events, winning the 100-meters in 15.86 and the 400-meter event in 15.86.
In field events, Tamika Cornell hit 16-feet to win the long jump. Teammate Vivian Ibewiro won the triple jump with a mark of 36-9.75. Latu Anna was a double winner, winning the discus (102-3, only athlete to clear 100 feet) and the hammer (116-8). |
