WOMEN'S TRACK FOURTH AT REGIONAL, TWO ATHLETES WIN REGIONAL TITLES TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (5/12/2012) |
Riverside City women's track and field team had two athletes win regional titles, while the team finished fourth overall in the team race. The Tigers finished with 50 points, while Cerritos, which will host the state championship meet beginning on Friday, May 19, won the regional title with 75 points. Glendale was second with 70 points, with Antelope Valley edging Riverside with 55 points.
Two athletes - pole vaulter Amy Hop and hammer thrower Jessika Byrd - won regional titles. Hop cleared 12-feet, 4 1/2 inches in winning the title. Meanwhile, Byrd, who is in her first year of throwing the hammer, managed a throw of 174-9 in winning the title. Teammate Fatima Vegara, who finished sixth in the shot put (39-10 3/4) and seventh in the hammer (172-4), will compete at the state championship meet. As will Marya Carter who finished third in the triple jump after leaping 37-9 1/2.
In running events, Birttany Osborne advanced in the 100 meters after finishing fourth in a time of 12.02. Breyonna Arnwine also advanced after finishing fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 55.69. The Tigers' 4x400 advanced with a second-place finish. El Camino, who ran a 3:49.38, edged the Tigers who finished in a time of 3:49.83. |

WOMEN'S TRACK QUALIFY ATHLETES IN 15 OF 21 EVENTS, SMITH COACH OF THE YEAR TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (5/5/2012) |
Riverside City women's track and field team qualified student-athletes in 15 of the 21 events a the Southern California Regional Prelim Meet at San Diego Mesa College. Meanwhile, the Orange Empire Conference also announced that head coach Damien Smith has been selected the conference's track and field women's coach of the year, after leading the Tigers to the conference title.
Smith and his athletes will return to San Diego on Saturday, May 12 for the regional finals. Top finishers advance to the state meet at Cerritos College in Norwalk, CA on May 19. |

WOMEN'S TRACK TAKE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (4/27/2012) |
Riverside City women's track and field team won its second consecutive Orange Empire Conference title, edging Orange Coast, 205 to 172. The back-to-back titles is the first for the Tigers since the 1994 and 1995 seasons. Golden West was third with 138 points, with Saddleback (107), Fullerton (104), Santiago Canyon (41) and Santa Ana (31), finishing fourth through seventh, respectively.
"The ladies really stepped up and showed some heart," said head coach Damien Smith. "I am very proud of this group of young ladies."
Riverside had four athletes win conference titles and 21 advance to the Southern California Meet next weekend in San Diego at Mesa College. Leading the list of conference champions is pole vaulter Amy Hop, who tied for the conference title, after tying the conference record with a vault of 11-feet, 11 3/4 inches. The vault also broke the college record, which Hop set earlier this season. Teammate Jessica Giacoletti won the triple jump at 5-5 1/4. He jump was a personal-best in the event. Meanwhile, freshman Jessika Byrd scored a huge upset when she threw the hammer 178-4 1/4 to beat Saddleback's Elizabeth Tepe. Two weeks ago, Tepe set a national record in the hammer, and was the clear favorite in the event to take the title. Byrd's throw was not only a school record, but also set a new conference record.
In running events, Riverside went 1-2 in the 100 meters as Brittney Osborne, who ran a 12.16, became a conference champion. Teammate Camille Williams, who also was second in the 200 meters (25.25) was second as she ran a personal-best time of 12.29 in the 100. Breyonna Arnwine became a two-time conference champion in the 400 meters. He time of 56.67 was her best time of the season. Shiloah Williams was fourth in the event, and she too posted a personal-best mark with a 58.47 time. In the shot put, Fatima Vegara led a contingent of Tiger finishers. Riverside had four athletes finish in the top five of the event. Vegara finished five inches behind the overall winner, Tawnya Turton of Saddleback who throw of 38-4 1/4 was good for the win. In the 800 meters, Tara Trevino and Quiana Winston finished second and third, respectively. However, they both set new personal-best marks. Trevino finished in 2:18.92, with Winston crossing the finish line in 2:20.03. The 4x100m and 4x400m relays were not pushed and cruised to an easy victories. J.J Dixon finished 2nd in the Steeple Chase with a PB of 12:14.10. |

OSBORNE SHINES AT MT. SAN ANTONIO RELAYS TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (4/14/2012) |
Riverside City's Brittany Osborne ran a 12.34 as she won the 100 meter dash at the Mt. San Antonio Relays this past weekend. The time was her second fastest time of the season. Previously she ran 12.24 at the Riverside Open on March 23. Meanwhile, high jumped Jessica Giacoletti finished second in the high jump despite finishing with a season-best 5-foot- 4 1/2 inch jump. In the shot put, Fatima Vegara finished third with a 30-10 throw and teammate Jessika Byrd also finished third after a 135-7 throw in the hammer.
Riverside will compete in the Orange Empire Conference Championship meet this Friday, April 20 and the following Friday. In addition to many prelim event this coming Friday, the conference will hold the finals in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the 10,000 meters and a few field events. The conference meet is being held at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. |

WOMEN'S TRACK SWEEPS THE COMPETITION TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (3/31/2012) |
Riverside City women's track and field team swept its last Orange Empire Conference dual meet, downing Orange Coast, 98-55, and Santiago Canyon, 137-13. The Tigers finished the dual meet season undefeated.
One of the highlights of the meet was Amy Hop clearing 12-feet in the high jump, more than good enough to win the event. She became the first Tiger this season to clear the 12-foot mark and it was 2 1/4 inches better than her previous best mark this season. In all, Riverside won all but two field events, and in one of those the Tigers had an athlete throw a season-best mark. Marya Carter, who finished second in the triple jump, won the long jump with a 16-feet, 2 1/4 effort. Jessika Byrd continued her dominance in the hammer, winning the event with a 172-1 throw. Teammate Fatima Vegara won the discus at 126-4 and the shot put with a 37-7 effort. Aariana Goshen, who finished second in the javelin, managed a season-best mark at 95-4.
In running events, Riverside won four events, including the 100 meters when Brittany Osborne posted her second fastest time of the season at 12.35. Breyonna Arnwine won the 400 meters with a 57.42 clocking. Hop won the 100 HH with a 15.60. In the 3000 meters, Lisbet Castaneda lowered her season-best time by over five seconds in winning the race. She finished in a time of 11:21.36. |

WOMEN'S TRACK HAS FOUR WIN EVENTS AT RIVERSIDE OPEN TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (3/23/2012) |
Riverside City women's track team had four athletes win events at the Riverside Open, led by Brittany Osborne who took the 100 meters in a time of 12.24. The time is an event best this season. Osborne holds the team's top three times in the event now. Teammate Camille Williams finished fourth with a 12.81 clocking.
The three other event winners all came from the field events. Jesskia Byrd won the hammer with a 163-foot, 11-inch effort. The throw is her third longest of the season and gives her the team's top six distances in the event. Fatima Vegara won the discus as she set the team's best mark this season at 127-8. The throw was her second over 127 feet and beat her previous best by five inches. Meanwhile, Marya Carter won the triple jump with a 35-9 1/4 jump.
Riverside also dominated in the relays, winning the 4x100 (1:10.01), the 4x200 (1:45.50) and the 4x400 (4:01.58). |

Riverside City freshman Aariana Goshen finished third at the Orange Empire Conference Heptathlon Championship. She amassed 3694 points, earning the Tigers seven points toward the conference title. Teammate Michelle Uy finished eighth with 2647 points. Golden West's Jaci Powell was the overall winner after collecting 4,999 points. The conference meet will be held on April 28 at Saddleback College in Missing Viejo. |

WOMEN'S TRACK SHINES AT BROWN INVITATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (3/10/2012) |
Riverside City women's track and field coach Damien Smith was in good spirits after the completion of the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton. "We're in the right place," said Smith. "I am excited about what I saw at the meet. Several athletes came away with personal bests, which means they are progressing."
Smith saw both Rebecca Virrey and Fatima Vegara post personal bests on Friday when Virrey, a freshman, threw the hammer 123-feet, 7-inches, which turned out to an 11-foot improvement over her previous best effort. Vegara then stepped up and hit her personal-best with a 148-9 effort. Meanwhile, freshman Jessika Byrd just missed her personal-best throw as she finished with a 171-6 effort.
On Saturday, sprinter Brittney Osborne ran a 12.39 in the 100 meters, which was her seasonal-best, but just missed her personal-best time of 12.20, which she ran last year as a freshman. Freshman Suzy Holt trimmed three seconds of her personal-best time in the 400 hurdles, finishing in a time of 1:07.76. Breyonna Arnwine, who typically runs the 400 meters, stepped up to the 800 meters and responded with a 2:17.94, which is the fifth fastest time in the state this season. Her appearance in the 800 meters was a first for the sophomore out of San Dimas High School. She'll return to the 400 meters for the remainder of the season. In the 5000 meters, Jennifer Dixon, who was running in the 5K event for the first time this season, posted a 18:19.64 time, good for fifth fastest in the state.
Riverside will be back in action March 14th 15th for the Heptathlon Championship at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo . The Tigers then will compete at the Aztec Invite in San Diego on March 16th & 17th.

HOP BREAKS POLE VAULT RECORD AT BEACH CLASSIC TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (3/3/2012) |
Riverside City sophomore Amy Hop (Jurupa Valley/Riverside, CA) broke the college record in the pole vault. Hop cleared 11-feet, 7 3/4-inches, bettering the previous mark of 11 feet. Hop previous career best mark had been 11-3. Meanwhile, Britanya Norwood (Summit/Fontana, CA) was the top community college finisher in the 100 meters. Norwood clocked a 12.74 time. Teammate Breyonna Arnwine (San Dimas/San Dimas, CA) was also the top community college finisher in the 400 meters, covering the track in a time of 55.10, good for fifth overall.

Throwing the hammer in just her third-career event, Riverside City freshman Jessika Byrd finished fifth overall and was the top community college finisher with a 162-foot, 11-inch throw. The throw is her second best after breaking the college record last week. She now holds the top three hammer throws in the college history. Teammate Fatima Vegara finished 11th overall with a toss of 136-0. |

WOMEN'S TRACK RUNS PAST SADDLEBACK TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (2/24/2012) |
Riverside City women's track team ran circles around Saddleback as the Tigers posted a 110-38 victory over the Gauchos in an Orange Empire Conference meet at Wheelock Field. The Tigers won every event, but eight.
Amy Hop set a team-best mark in the 100 meter hurdles at 15.40. The top three finishers in the 100-meter dash all bettered the previous best seasonal mark. Brittany Osborne won the event with a time of 12.40. All three finished under 13 seconds. In the 200 meters, Britonya Norwood set a new season-best time with a 26.29 clocking. Riverside swept both relay events.
In field events, Marya Carter bettered her previous best mark by a foot and four inches with a 37-6.50 effort in the triple jump. Jessica Giacoletti also bettered her team-leading mark in the high jump as she cleared 5-4.25. Fatima Vegara won the shot put with a toss of 38-9. Aariana Goshen won the javelin with a 84-7 effort. |

BYRD BREAKS HAMMER RECORD TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (2/22/2012) |
Riverside City freshman Jessika Byrd (Arlington/Riverside, CA) broke the college hammer record with a toss of 174-feet, 6-inches, highlighting the Tigers' nonconference meet with Division I Cal State Long Beach at Wheelock Field. The 174-6 throw shattered the record of Ashley Mercado who in 2008 threw 159-1. Byrd out threw Cal State Long Beach's Shari Harris who managed a 161-9 effort.
Riverside had two other individual winners in Fatima Vegara (Corona/Corona, CA) and Jessica Giacoletti (Rim/Rim of the World, CA). Vegara, a freshman, won the shot put with a 40-9.5 throw. She edged out CSLB's Alexandria Cervantes whose best throw was 39-7.75. Meanwhile, Giacoletti out jumped CSLB's Amber Britt in the high jump. Giacoletti managed a 5-3.75 effort jump, the only competitor to clear 5-feet. Britt finished at 4-11.75.
Riverside remains home on Friday, February 24 for a three-way Orange Empire Conference meet with Saddleback and Santa Ana. |

WOMEN'S TRACK HAS STRONG SHOWING IN AZUSA PACIFIC EVENT TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (2/18/2012) |
Riverside City women's track and field team had four individual winners at the Azusa Pacific Meet this past weekend. Sophomore Breyonna Arnwine (San Dimas HS/San Dimas, CA) won the 600 meter run. Her time of 1:37.39 was over two seconds faster than the runner-up from Concordia University.
Riverside's other winners were all in field events, led by freshman Rebecca Virrey (Elsinore/Lake Elsinore) in the discus. Virrey threw 118-feet, 4-inches almost two feet further than the second-place finisher. Sophomore Marya Carter (Alta Loma/Alta Loma), who was fourth in the long jump, won the triple jump with a leap of 36-2.25. Teammate Jasmine Ogbonna (Upland/Upland) was second with a jump of 35-3.75. Freshman Jessica Giacoletti (Rim/Rim of the World, CA) took the high jump. She was the only athlete to clear five feet at 5-1.
In the 60-meter dash, Riverside's Britanya Norwood (Summitt/Fontana, CA) was one of only nine athletes to finish in under eight seconds. Her time of 7.37 was second best, just .07 behind Leslie Cole of Run With Us Track Club. In the 60-meter hurdles, Riverside's Amy Hop and Ogbonna, finished second and third, respectively. Hop (Jurupa Valley/Riverside, CA) finished in a time of 9.25, with Ogbonna finishing in a time of 9.43.
Riverside will host Cal State Long Beach on Wednesday, February 22 in a non-scoring event at Wheelock Field and then host Saddleback and Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference meet on Friday, February 24. Both meets begin at 2 pm.

WOMEN'S TRACK OPENS WITH THREE WINS TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (2/10/2012) |
Riverside City women's track and field team opened its 2012 season by sweeping Golden West, Santa Ana and host Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference meet at Cal State Fullerton. The Tigers, the defending conference champions, posted a 107-45 victory over Fullerton, a 93-60 win over Golden West and a 120-20 pasting of Santa Ana.
Freshman Shiloah Williams (North HS/Riverside, CA0 stood out for the Tigers. Williams won the 200 and 400 meters. In the 200 meters, she ran a 26.89, edging teammate Breyonna Arnwine by .01. In the 400 meters, Williams won in a time of 60.27. She also helped the 4x100 relay team to a first-place showing and the 4x400 relay team to a second-place finish. |

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND VIEWPOINTS LAUNCHES TIGER TV GENERAL NEWS (9/15/2011) |
The Riverside athletic department, in conjunction with Viewpionts, the District's on-campus newspaper, has launched Tiger TV.
James Martinez, Matt Dziak and Javier Cabrera, editor in chief of Viewpoints, will cover Tiger athletics from the sidelines to the locker room, giving Tiger fans an inside look at the week's happenings.
There will be post-game interviews as well as a weekly wrap up and highlights from all 19 athletic teams during the 2011-12 season.
"We're excited about Tiger TV," said Athletic Director Barry Meier. "It will be another way for us to keep the community involved in the 19 athletic programs and the student-athletes who work so hard - in the classroom and on the field.
"Viewpoints is a top-notch college newspapers and (associate professor of Journalism) Allan Lovelace does a tremendous job working with his students to put them in a position to pull off a project like this. In the end, this is a win-win, a win for our student-athletes and win for the students wanting a career in broadcast journalism." |

Community Education Football Offense/Defense Class
Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Football Fundamentals (KIN-A60/A61 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course provides the student an opportunity to learn general and specific individual defensive and offensive football fundamental techniques and strategies, emphasizing active participation in the game of football. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 3. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the football practice field. Students should come in proper football attire, which includes shorts and cleats. Cost is $36, please bring exact change. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Tom Craft. |

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Out of Season Basketball Conditioning Class (KIN-A95 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course applies advanced conditioning and weight training principles for an out-of-season training program for varsity sport competition. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 17. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm in Wheelock Gym, on Monday through Friday with the end date being June 7. Students should come in proper attire, which includes gym shoes. Cost is $36, please bring exact change in you plan on registering in person. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Joshua Thomas. |

This course is designed to introduce students to the rules, basic skills, and offensive/defensive strategy in soccer Emphasis will be placed on improving individual skills and applying these skills to game situations Subsequent enrollment in additional semesters will provide the student an opportunity for added skill competency development. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, July 3. The Community Education class will take place from 8 am to 10 am at the Norco College Soccer Stadium and meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (ending date is August 14, will be no class on Wednesday, July 4).
