WOMEN'S WATER POLO SETTLES FOR THIRD PLACE WATERPOLO WOMEN (11/21/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team finished third at the California Community Colleges Athletic Association Championship this past weekend. Riverside, which opened the tournament with a victory, was upset in the second round by its nemesis Golden West. The Rustlers' 8-5 victory over the Tigers in the second round was their third victory over Riverside this season. All of Riverside's losses came at the hands of Golden West, which went on to beat Long Beach City in the championship match.
Riverside closed out the tournament by beating Sierra, 18-6, to take third place. The Tigers had two players - Jamie Clark and Maria Quiroz - named to the all-state team.
Riverside finished the 2009 season with a 29-3 record. |

WOMEN'S WATER POLO OPENS STATE FINALS WITH A WIN WATERPOLO WOMEN (11/19/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team opened the 2009 California Community Colleges Athletic Association State Championship with a 14-3 rout of Foothill College, the north's No. 3 seed.
Riverside, the south's top seed, will take on Golden West, the south No. 3 seed and the only team to beat them this season, in another pool-play match on Friday (Nov. 20) at 3 p.m. The championship is being held at Golden West College in Huntington Beach. The tournament concludes on Saturday, Nov. 21.
In the win over Foothill, Riverside held the Owls to one first-half goal behind All-American goalie Jayme Pekarske. Meanwhile, the Tiger offense was roaring, scoring two goals in the first quarter and adding two more in the second quarter. Riverside, winners of its last eight matches, put the match away with four third-quarter goals.
Seven different players scored in the match, led by Katie Teets and Brianna Bloom who scored three goals apiece. Jamie Clark, Jasmine Duran and Maria Quiroz each added two. |

WOMEN'S WATER POLO REGIONAL CHAMPS WATERPOLO WOMEN (11/14/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo won the Southern California Regional Tournament this past weekend in Huntington Beach, and will take the south's No. 1 seed into the California Colleges Athletic Association State Championship in Huntington Beach on November 19.
Riverside, the Orange Empire Conference Champion for the sixth consecutive season, opens the state finals against Foothill College, the north's No. 3 seed, on Thursday at noon. The Tigers, who are the favorites to win their third title in five years, will also face Golden West - the only team to beat them this year - Friday at 3 p.m.
In winning the regional championship, Riverside won three matches - two against Orange Empire Conference opponents - both by one goal - Golden West (5-4) and Orange Coast (8-7).

RIVERSIDE TOP SEED FOR REGIONAL TOURNEY WATERPOLO WOMEN (11/8/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team secured the south's No. 1 for this week's Southern California Water Polo Tournament at Pasadena after downing Orange Coast 9-4 in the finals of the Orange Empire Conference Tournament. The title is Riverside's sixth consecutive conference title.
Riverside will face the winner of the (No. 8) Palomar-(No. 9) San Diego Mesa match on Friday, Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. at Pasadena City College. Four of the 10 teams in the regional tournament come from the Orange Empire Conference. Three teams will advance to the state championship tournament, which will be held at Golden West College on Nov. 19.
In wining the conference tournament, Riverside held Orange Coast to one second-half goal as the Tigers' offense unleashed six goals over the final 16 minutes. Jamie Clark scored four goals in the victory. Meanwhile, All-American goalie Jayme Pekarske stopped 14 of 20 shots on goal. Riverside improved to 24-2 headed into the regional tournament. |

RIVERSIDE ADVANCES TO CONFERENCE FINALS WATERPOLO WOMEN (11/5/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team advanced to the finals of the Orange Empire Conference Tournament in Fullerton with a 15-4 victory over the host Hornets. Riverside will take on Orange Coast after the Pirates stunned Golden West, 8-7, in the other semifinal match. Golden West is the only program this season to have beaten the Tigers. The Rustlers have handed Riverside both of its losses this season.
In the win over Fullerton, Riverside took a 7-2 halftime lead and cruised from there. The Tigers held Fullerton scoreless in the second and third quarters. By the end of the third quarter, Riverside led 13-2.
Seven different players scored goals. Three players - Katie Teets, Ashley Antonissen and Jamie Clark - each scored three goals. |

WOMEN'S WATER POLO CLOSES OUT CONFERENCE WITH A WIN WATERPOLO WOMEN (10/28/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo closed out the Orange Empire Conference dual meet season with a 16-7 rout of Saddleback in Misison Viejo. Riverside will now prepare for the conference tournament next week at Fullerton College. The conference title figures to come down between Riverside, the defending champions, and Golden West. The Rustlers have defeated the Tigers twice this season - Riverside's only losses of the year.
In the win over Saddleback, Riverside jumped out to a 12-3 halftime lead and cruised from there. Seven different players scored goals. Jamie Clark and Maria Quiroz led Riverside with four goals apiece. |

WOMEN'S WATER POLO HAS WIN STREAK STOPPED WATERPOLO WOMEN (10/24/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team had its won streak snapped as Golden West scored an 8-3 victory over the Tigers at the Battle at the Beach Tournament at Long Beach City College. The loss was just the second of the season for Riverside - both at the hands of Golden West. The Rustlers beat Riverside on September 23rd, 8-4, in an Orange Empire Conference match.
Riverside closes out the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 28th when the Tigers travel to Mission Viejo to take on Saddleback in a conference match. Then, beginning on Thursday, Nov. 5, Riverside will compete in the Orange Empire Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by Fullerton College.
Riverside did win three matches at the tournament in Long Beach - beating Grossmont, 14-5, Chaffey, 10-6, despite not scoring in the first quarter, and Long Beach City, 8-3. Katie Teets had a big weekend, scoring nine goals - four against Chaffey and Long Beach City. |

RIVERSIDE ROLLS PAST CYPRESS, 19-4 WATERPOLO WOMEN (10/21/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team scored 19 goals on 37 shots as the Tigers posted an easy, 19-4, victory over Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference match. Riverside has one conference match remaining - Oct. 28 at Saddleback in Mission Viejo.
Against, Cypress, 12 different players scored goals, led by Jamie Clark and Maria Quiroz. They each scored three goals. Back-up goalie Whitney Turner started in place of All-American Jayme Pekarske. Turner was impressive as she stopped 7 of 11 shots on goal.
Riverside will travel to Long Beach this weekend for the Battle at the Beach Tournament. The Tigers take a 10-match win streak into the tournament. |

TIGERS WIN GOLDEN WEST TOURNAMENT WATERPOLO WOMEN (10/16/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team won the one-day, three-team Golden West Tournament on Friday as the Tigers scored a 12-6 over host Golden West and then won a 7-6 thriller over Long Beach City in sudden death.
In the win over Long Beach City, Riverside fell behind 3-1 after the first quarter and 4-2 at halftime. The Tigers pulled even in the third quarter as goalie Jayme Pekarske held the Vikings scoreless, and Riverside added two goals. Each team scored one goal in the fourth period and in the first overtime period. In the sudden death period, freshman Jaime Clark (North) scored her third goal of the game to give the Tigers the win and the tournament title.
The victory was Riverside's ninth straight victory.
In the win over Golden West, Riverside dominated the match as the Tigers took a leads of 6-2 at halftime and 9-3 after the third period.
The Tigers travel to Cypress on Wednesday before competing in the Long Beach Tournament on Friday and Saturday. |

PEKARSKE PITCHES A SHUTOUT AGAINST ORANGE COAST WATERPOLO WOMEN (10/14/2009) |
Riverside sophomore Jayme Pekarske stopped all 12 shots on goal as the Tigers recorded a 10-0 victory over Orange Coast in an Orange Empire Conference match at Sippy Woodhead Pool. The shutout of an opponent is a first since the 2007 season when the Tigers routed Santa Rosa 17-0 in a semifinal match of the state tournament.
Pekarske had plenty of offensive and defensive help as Riverside extended its 3-0 halftime lead with four goals in the third quarter and another three in the final period. The victory is Riverside's seventh in a row headed into the Golden West Tournament this weekend in Huntington Beach.

PEKARSKE NAMED COUNTY COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WATERPOLO WOMEN (9/23/2009) |
Riverside women water polo goalie Jayme Pekarske has been selected the Riverside County College Player of the Week, as selected by the readers of the Riverside Press Enterprise.
Pekarske earned her second straight nomination of the award by extending the Tigers' season-opening winning streak to eight games with her play in goal at the Chaffey Tournament last weekend, with 47 saves and just 11 goals allowed in four matches. Against defending state champion Cerritos, she faced 20 shots on goal and stopped 14. She has allowed 19 goals on the season, and RCC has outscored its opponents 123-33 this season.
Other college athletes nominated included:
Jose Moreno, La Sierra soccer: The junior scored the winning goal against San Diego Christian last Friday in a 2-1 victory, and (although it technically falls outside the window of eligibility) added his second goal of the year in a 1-0 victory over Caltech Monday night.
Daylan Swedlow, Redlands football: A junior running back from Lake Arrowhead, Swedlow played a key role in Redlands' 29-24 victory at Whitworth Saturday with 27 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown. Swedlow accounted for 37 of the 68 yards on a Redlands scoring drive in the fourth quarter, and added 44 yards during the Bulldogs' final clock-draining drive to seal the game.
UCR women's cross country team: The Highlanders are 2 for 2 this season, adding a team victory in the UCR Invitational last week to their triumph at the Nevada meet earlier in the year. This time the Highlanders topped No. 25 BYU, putting three runners in the top 15 and all five in the top 34.
Jane Chafeh, Cal State San Bernardino volleyball: The junior outside hitter from Riverside Notre Dame High School averaged 4.85 kills and 2.42 digs per set for the No. 2 Coyotes in their weekend victories over No. 24 Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus. Chafeh, ranked second in the nation in kills going into the weekend, had 25 kills against Chico State and nine against Stanislaus. The Coyotes are 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA.
Allison Pena, Cal State San Bernardino women's soccer: Pena, a freshman, scored the eventual winning goal in her first college start Friday in the Coyotes' 2-0 victory over Humboldt State, and assisted on Unity Beddingfield's game-winning goal in the second overtime Sunday in San Bernardino's 2-1 victory over Sonoma State. Both opponents were ranked in the West region. |

Golden West stopped Riverside's eight-match win streak as the Rustlers scored an 8-4 victory over the Tigers in an Orange Empire Conference match in Huntington Beach.
Golden West, a traditional powerhouse in aquatic sports, scored four goals in the second quarter to take a 5-2 halftime lead and then used solid defense to shut down what had been a powerful Riverside offense. The Tigers managed just one goal a quarter, after scoring 123 goals in their first eight matches. Riverside was successful on just for 4 of 26 shots on goal. Four different players scored for Riverside.

WIN STREAK AT EIGHT FOR WOMEN'S WATER POLO WATERPOLO WOMEN (9/20/2009) |
Riverside women's water polo team ran its win streak to eight with a sweep of the competition at the Chaffey Tournament this past weekend. With the four victories this past weekend, Riverside has now outscored its opponents, 123 to 33. In only one match has the Tigers been held to less than 10 goals and no team has yet to score more than six goals against Riverside's defense and sophomore goalie Jayme Pekarske.
In winning their second tournament of the season, Riverside scored wins over San Diego Mesa (17-3), Santa Rosa (12-2), defending state champions Cerritos (7-6) and Citrus (18-4). By far, Riverside's toughest match of the season was against Cerritos, which beat Long Beach City in last year's final. The Falcons jumped out to a 3-2 first-quarter lead, but Riverside stormed back with four second-quarter goals as the Tigers took a 6-4 lead at halftime. In the final 16 minutes of the match, defense ruled as the two teams combined for just three goals. Riverside got goals from six different players. Chelsea Harrod had a team-high two goals in the win over Cerritos. For the weekend, she finished with eight goals.

RIVERSIDE OPENS SEASON BY WINNING AMERICAN RIVER TOURNAMENT WATERPOLO WOMEN (9/13/2009) |
Riverside Ashley Antonissen, a freshman forward from ML King High School, scored a team-best 13 goals, and sophomore goalie Jayme Pekarske dominate the net as the Tigers won the American River Tournament.
Riverside scored victories over American River (17-3), Fresno City (21-2), Santa Rosa (13-6) and West Valley (18-6). Three of these programs qualified for the state championship tournament last year.
Pekarske, an All-American last season, stopped 20 of the 28 shots on goal (.714 percent) against her as she shut down some of the best competition Northern California had to offer this past weekend. She also had 7 assists and 2 steals from the goalie position.
Riverside returns to the pool this weekend for the Chaffey Tournament, which begins on Friday and concludes on Saturday (Sept. 19).

2010 Tiger Backer Golf Tournament
The Riverside Community College Tiger Backer Association is accepting player applications for the 2010 Tiger Backer Classic Golf Tournament, which benefits the District's 19 athletic programs. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, April 5 at Canyon Crest Country Club.
The tournament is limited to the first 175 entry fees. Fees cover green fee, lunch, dinner and awards. It is a four-man scramble.
