Dandy Signs with CSU, Bakersfield

The CSUB men's basketball team added a talented member to its backcourt rotation with the signing of Riverside City College transfer Anthony Dandy.

Dandy (6-0, 170) is an Inland Empire native who prepped at San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino before spending the last two seasons at RCC, where he led the Tigers to the 2007 Orange Empire League title and a pair of regional playoff berths.

"Anthony's speed, athleticism and ability to score in the open court will add components that improve the versatility of our backcourt," says CSUB Head Coach Keith Brown. "Also, his experience and intensity will be relied upon when he steps on the floor next season."

BASEBALL HAS FOUR NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE

Riverside had four players selected to the 2008 Orange Empire All-Conference Team it was announced this morning by the conference.

Eric Krzysiak, a designated hitter who has moved into the starting catcher spot late in the season, was selected to the first team, while teammates-outfielder Michael Hur, relief pitcher Sean Greer and utility player Daniel Duran-were named to the second team.

Riverside, the defending state champions, finished fifth in conference, but was selected for the regional playoffs. The Tigers open the playoffs on the road against Chaffey College. The best two-out-of-three series begins on Friday at 2 p.m. Riverside is seeded No. 10, while Chaffey, champions of the Foothill Conference, are seeded No. 7.

May leads 37 athletes in regional finals

Riverside men's head track coach Jim McCarron says the Tigers did exactly what they needed to do to win the Southern California Championship.

What they did is qualify 38 athletes for the finals Saturday at Bakersfield College.

"Needless to say, I was very pleased with the team's performance," said McCarron, who knows his team is one of two favorites for the state championship along with Sacramento City.

Riverside got standout performances from such athletes as Stephan May in the 800 meters. May posted a 1:56.13 time, while teammate Nick Matsueda finished in 1:56.27.

The 4x100 relay team had a strong showing, winning the event in a time of 40.48. The time is the fastest in the state this season and eight quickest in the program's history.

TIGERS SWEEP GROSSMONT TO ADVANCE IN SOCAL REGIONALS

Jessica Martinez had two hits and two RBI and the Tigers took advantage of four Grossmont errors to knock off the Griffins, 10-2, in five innings on Sunday in the second game of the Southern California Regionals opening round in El Cajon.

The win gave Riverside, the #9 seed in the playoffs, a two-game sweep of eighth-seeded Grossmont in the best-of-three series. The Tigers advance to the regional finals to face Orange Empire Conference rival Cypress. The top-seeded Chargers, who dispatched of 16th-seeded Oxnard, will host the regional next weekend at the Cypress College campus.

Christin Dun, who had a team-high 11 HR, was walked three times but scored three runs, and Leesa Galvan and Valerie Brown each scored twice for the Riverside, which won Saturday's opener by an 8-0 count.


BASEBALL SELECTED FOR PLAYOFFS

Five Orange Empire Conference teams have been selected for the Southern California Playoffs it was announced today. One of those teams was Riverside, which finished fifth in the conference and is the defending state champions.

Riverside, which is 27-17, struggled in conference play, but finished the regular season with the state's best RPI ranking, one of the criteria for being one of the 18 teams selected for the playoffs.

The Tigers were seeded No. 10 and will open the playoffs on the road against Chaffey College of the Foothill Conference. The Panthers won the conference championship and take a 30-9 record in their best-two-out-of-three series. Game 1 is Friday at 2 p.m. Game 2 is Saturday at noon, and if needed another will take place 30 minutes later.

TIGERS SWEEP MEN'S TENNIS FINALS

Daniel Coelho continued his strong post-season play as he won the Southern California Men's Tennis Championship singles' title, and then teamed up with Yair Banuelos to win the doubles competition.

The sweep marked the first time Riverside had a singles and doubles champion at the regional level. Next up the two will try to make it a three in a row when they compete in the state finals this weekend at El Dorado Park Tennis Center in Long Beach.

Coelho figures to be the No. 1 seed in singles, he and Banuelos should be the top seed in doubles, according to head coach Jim Elton.

Coelho appears to be on a roll, having won the Ojai Tournament the regional titles in consecutive outtings. In the finals of the regional tournament, he downed Ventura College's Hassan Abbas, who ....More

Glassey Qualifies for State Finals

One final, one Riverside athlete moving on.

Riverside sophomore Casey Glassey placed sixth in the Southern California Regional 10,000 meter final on Saturday earning the right to compete at the state finals later this month. Glassey finished in 40:16.3, a new personal best mark. Her time is the ninth fastest in the programmmââ‚s history. She managed to claim the final automatic spot for the finals by finishing in sixth place.

"Casey did a great job of finding great position in the race and maintaining the pace to stay with the chase group," said head coach Mike Barbee. "Her early commitment to remain in the top six proved enough, as the next racer was never able to catch her."

Jones named OEC sprinter of the year

The Orange Empire Conference announced today that Riverside sprinter Ennis Jones and Lance Gonzales, a multi-sport competitor, have been selected as the male athletes of the year. Head coach Jim McCarron, who led the Tigers to their second consecutive conference championship, was named coach of the year for the second consecutive time.

Jones, a graduate of North High School in Riverside, generated 40 of Riverside's conference-record 347 points. At the conference championships, he won the 400 meters, 200 meters and ran legs on both of the 4x100 and the 4x400, which finished first.

Jones, who moves on to the regional competition in Bakersfield this weekend, currently ranks second in the 400 meters and third in the 200 meters. Meanwhile, the 4x100 relay team is the state top-ran....More

Hoover signs with UC Irvine

Riverside freshman pitcher Nicholas Hoover announced that he has signed with UC Irvine, a Division I program and a member of the Big West Conference, for the 2009 season.

Hoover, a graduate of Alta Loma High School, has appeared in 11 games for the Tigers this season through Sunday, April 27. He has started eight of those games and takes a 1-2 record and a 4.29 ERA into the final week of the regular season.

He has struck out 40 batters in 38.2 innings and walked just 17. He has allowed 31 hits. The opposition is hitting .214 against him.

Trainer named volleyball coach

Riverside Athletic Director Barry Meier announced today that he has hired Monica Trainer as the Tigers' volleyball coach. Trainer has been an assistant coach at UC Riverside for the past 22 years to UC Riverside Head Coach Sue Gozansky.

Trainer becomes Riverside's first full-time coach in nearly 10 years.

"This is a great time for me in my career," said Trainer. "I'm excited to run my own program. Obviously, I've learned a lot while at UCR, but I'm so excited to try things on my own."

Trainer said she knew from the beginning this was the right move for her.

"It's funny as soon as I stepped on campus I felt welcome," she said. "I remember thinking after the interview how much I would love to work at the college.

Bills signs with Cal Poly Pomona

Sophomore pitcher Graham Bills, a graduate of Paloma Valley, announced this morning that he has signed a letter-of-intent with Cal Poly Pomona for the 2009 season.

A 6-1, 220 righthander, Bills has leads the Riverside staff with a 1.04 ERA. He has appeared in 10 games, making one start. Headed into the final week of the season, Bills is 1-0.

Coelho wins Ojai Tournament single's title

Riverside men's tennis team won the Ojai Tournament as the Tigers' number two singles player Daniel Coelho became just the second student-athlete to win an Ojai Tournament title when he downed Tiago Hayashi of College of the Desert.

Coelho joins Steve Kluse as the only player to ever win an Ojai Tournament title. Kluse, who now teaches tennis locally, won the Ojai Tournament singles title in 1982.

Coelho won the first set 6-4 then fell behind 2-5 in the second before battling back and posting a 7-6 (3) victory. Ironically, four of the single semifinalists were from the Orange Empire Conference. Yair Banuelos, Riverside's No. 1 singles player, lost to Hayashi in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1.

FIVE TIGERS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE SOFTBALL HONORS

Riverside had five players selected to the 2008 Orange Empire Conference Softball Team it was announced by the conference this weekend.

Leading the list was Leesa Galvan and Christin Dunn, both of whom were selected to the first team. Outfielder Amber Lozan, Long Beach State transfer Jaime Schmidt, a short stop, and outfielder Diana Torrez were named to the second team.

Cypress' Ashley Boyd was named the conference player of the year and Alyssa Freight of Cypress were named conference pitcher of the year.

Galvan, a graduate of Valley View High School in Moreno Valley, hit .368 with 11 home runs and 21 runs knocked in. Dunn, who graduated from AB Miller on Fontana, hit .358 with 11 doubles, 11 home runs and a team-best 38 runs knocked in.

Results

Riverside women's track team fell short in its goal of repeating as Orange Empire Conference Champions as Orange Coast squeezed out the win by a mere six points.

"We fell about six points short of winning this year's Orange Empire Conference Championship," said head coach Mike Barbee. "Before the meet began we knew it would be very close. Early in the meet, the team was exceeding our expected team point totals. However, we had one major breakdown event-wise and the ultimately cost us the meet. Orange Coast did a very good job, and their strength in distance and hurdles proved to be more than we could overcome."
