CYPRESS SCORES A 7-0 VICTORY OVER TIGERS
FASTPITCH WOMEN (3/10/2010)
Cypress pitchers Katrina Pinkowski and Mia Magalona combined for a two-hit, shutout as the Chargers (9-0, 18-0) scored a 7-0 victory over Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference game in Cypress.
Jackie Serna (single) and Lindsay Monk (double) had the only hits for the Tigers (5-4, 10-9). Pinkowski, a graduate of Corona High School, struck out 12 batters and walked one in 5 2/3 innings. All but one Riverside player - Shelby Vanderwall - was a strike out victim.
Riverside returns home on Friday for a 6 p.m. game against Fullerton at the Evans Sports Complex.
RIVERSIDE ROLLS OVER SADDLEBACK, SETS SITES ON CYPRESS

It's never a good idea for teams to look ahead, but the men's tennis team just can't help themselves. Riverside held serve against Saddleback downing the Gauchos 8-1, but they did it with their sights set on a rematch with Cypress next Thursday.
As of now, Cypress, which shared the conference title with Riverside last season, is in the driver's seat for the 2010 crown. But a Riverside victory on March 11 can split that crown in half once again. The Chargers beat Riverside, 5-4, at home on March 4.

CYPRESS SNAPS BASEBALL'S WIN STREAK

Riverside had its four-game win streak snapped as Cypress defeated the visiting Tigers, 12-5, in an Orange Empire Conference game.
The game was a showdown for first place in the conference race. Cypress (12-4) improved to 4-0 in conference, while the Tigers (6-7) fell to 3-1. The Chargers are now left as the only unbeaten team in conference play.
Cypress erupted for four runs in the first three innings and then added eight runs over the course of three innings to secure the win. The Chargers roughed up Riverside pitching for 15 hits, 7 of which were for extra bases. Meanwhile, Riverside managed just six hits against seven Cypress pitchers.
Starter Ray Hanson picked up the win - his fourth of the season - by working 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball.
Saddleback, one of the top programs this year in women's tennis, scored a 9-0 Orange Empire Conference victory over Riverside as the Gauchos remained undefeated at 10-0. The loss drops Riverside to 0-4 in conference and 4-4 overall headed into Saturday's home match against Weslyn University of Kansas at the Fran Bushman Tennis Complex.
Against Saddleback, Riverside didn't have many answers as the Gauchos won the first five single matches in straight sets. The Tigers' Dayana Salgado battled at No. 6 singles, but ended up falling, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
GOLF TEAM SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON

Riverside suffered its first loss of the season as the Tigers fell to Cypress, 376 to 386, in an Orange Empire Conference match at the Navy Course in Cypress.
Caleb Malcolm led Riverside with a 75. Four other players managed to finish in the 70s - Steve Anderson (77), Justin Sandoval (77), Trent Combs (78) and Nick Paez (79).
FASTPITCH CAPS WEEK BY WINNING 4 OF 5 IN FRESNO

Riverside's fastpitch team capped a busy week by winning four of five games. The Tigers won six of seven games last week and have won eight of their last nine and nine of their last 11 games after starting the season with four consecutive losses.
At the Fresno Tournament, Riverside scored wins of 6-3 over DeAnza, 15-0 over Reedley, 5-0 over Redwoods and 9-1 over Victor Valley. The Tigers' only blemish was a 9-3 loss to host Fresno.
Sophomore outfielder Jackie Serna had a big week, going 9 for 21 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Olivia Wilcox had a strong tournament with three home runs and 5 RBIs. She went 5 for 15 in Fresno.

Pilchur heads for home in the 400 meters
Competing against universities and top community college programs on a cloudy, rainy day, Riverside's Chris Benard and the Tigers' 4x400 relay team took it upon themselves to shine a little at the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton.
Benard finished second in the long jump and triple jump, while the relay team of Garrett Baxter, Marquis Pilchur, Khurtis Henry and Cory Evans won the event, beating such programs as Cal State Los Angeles, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside in the process. Riverside's time was 3:14.50, over four seconds faster than their best time this year. The foursome beat Cal State Los Angeles by nearly a second.
Benard jumped 23-feet, 8.25 inches in the long jump. He was beaten by four inches by UCLA's Nelson Rosario. Teammate Charles Smi....More
WOMEN'S TRACK HAS STRONG SHOWING AT INVITATIONAL
TRACK AND FIELD WOMEN (3/6/2010)
Riverside had a strong showing at the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton, led by its relay squads. Riverside's 4x100 relay posted a season-best 48.50, good for fifth place and the 4x400 relay team posted a 4:05.08 for a sixth-place finish.
Individually, Vivian Ibewiro made an impression on the four-year coaches finishing third in the long jump with a 17-6.75 mark. Only UC Santa Barbara's Tamara Thomas and Veronica Gines had better marks as they tied for first place with 17-9 jumps. Ibewiro also competed in the 100-meter hurdles where she finished 13th in a time of 15.81, a season-best mark.
In running events, Riverside had a couple Top 10 finishers as Casey Candelaria finished fifth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:17.67, 2.5 seconds off the time for ....More
MEN'S SWIM SWEEPS DUAL MEET
SWIMMING AND DIVING MEN (3/6/2010)
Riverside men's swim team opened the Orange Empire Conference dual meet season with victories over Fullerton and Golden West. The Tigers defeated Golden West, 161-51, and Fullerton, 188-24.
Riverside won seven events. Patrick Griffitts was a double winner, winning the 1,000 free (10:40.11) and the 500 free (5:01.98). Teammate Kevin Garcia was also won two events - 200 IM (2:06.48) and the 200 breaststroke (2:20.81). Single-event winners were: Kurt Williams (200 free, 1:52.69), Alex Serrano (200 butterfly, 2:06.75) and Brian Terwilliger (200 backstroke, 2:12.69).

SWIMMING AND DIVING WOMEN (3/6/2010)
Riverside women's swim team got off to a 2-0 start in the race for the Orange Empire Conference dual championship as the Tigers edged Golden West, 149-132, and rolled past Fullerton, 239-43.
Riverside was led by Chelsea Ankeny who won three events and Amy Heitman who won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competition. Ankeny won the 200 free (2:03.44), 100 backstroke (1:01.79) and the 500 free (5:27.11).
SIGN-UPS BEING ACCEPTED FOR TIGER BACKER TOURNAMENT
GOLF MEN (2/4/2010)
The Riverside Community College Tiger Backer Association is accepting player applications for the 2010 Tiger Backer Classic Golf Tournament, which benefits the District's 19 athletic programs. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, April 5 at Canyon Crest Country Club.
The tournament is limited to the first 175 entry fees. Fees cover green fee, lunch, dinner and awards. It is a four-man scramble.
