FIRST-HALF STRUGGLES DOOMS MEN'S BASKETBALL

BASKETBALL MEN (3/3/2012)


Riverside City men's basketball team was trying to become the first basketball team to win four consecutive road-playoff games, but in the end Antelope Valley, who was trying to make its fourth state championship tournament, prevailed with a 87-73 victory over the Tigers in a Southern California Regional final in Lancaster.

A few days after scoring just 13 points in the first half against Saddleback, Riverside's offensive woes continued as the Tigers were held to 23 first-half points. Riverside, which finished the season 17-11, made just 6 of 22 field goals in the first half. The Tigers were able to remain within 20 points thanks to 10 of 12 shooting from the free throw line. Riverside, which was led by Bernard Ireland with 21 points, used a second-half press which cut the Marauder (24-7) lead from 20 point to 10 with just eight minutes left. Antelope Valley, which will take on Yuba in a state championship semifinal game on Saturday, recovered in time to close out the Tigers.

Antelope Valley had five players score in double figures, led by Jason Johnson who had 20.

THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM AS RIVERSIDE WINS AT SADDLEBACK, 50-41

MISSION VIEJO -- Proving that the third time is the charm, the No. 19 seed Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers outlasted the host and No. 6 seed Saddleback College Gauchos, 50-41, in a third-round Southern California Regional Playoff game Wednesday night at the Saddleback Gym.

On Leap Day, the Tigers did just that after seeing Saddleback defeat Riverside twice in Orange Empire Conference (OEC) action adding more evidence on how difficult it is to defeat the same team three times in the same season.

Both teams limped through a woeful-shooting first half with the scored tied, 13-13, after the first 20 minutes. Riverside (17-10) shot only 27.8% (5 of 18) from the floor in the opening half, but Saddleback (20-9) was worse at 17.4% (4 of 23).

Midway through the second half, RCC snapped a 25-25 tie with an 8-0 run for a 33-25 lead with 7:34 left on back-to-back three-point field goals by Maurice Johns (8:38) and Corey Walker (7:34). Saddleback crept to within 35-33 with 4:17 remaining, but the Tigers kept the Gauchos at bay by converting 10 of 13 free throws down the stretch, including 9 of 10 in the last 1:32.

All told, there were six ties and 11 lead changes.

Eight of the ten Tigers who played, scored, but none in double figures. Dominique Lanier led RCC with nine points, while freshman guard Mason Biddle and Maurice Johns each added eight markers. Bernard Ireland chipped in with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. For Saddleback, Darnell Taylor put in a game-high 17 points (2-10 FGs, 13-14 FTs) and Josh Smith had a game-high ten rebounds.

With the win, Riverside advances to the regional finals when it visits the No. 7 seed Antelope Valley College Marauders on Saturday, Mar. 3, at 7 p.m.


SMITH TO BE HONORED AT ANNUAL UNSUNG HEROES RECEPTION

Riverside City men's basketball coach John Smith will be honored by Riverside Africa American Historical Society at its annual Unsung Heroes Reception, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 11 at California Baptist University. Coach Smith and his Tigers will play in the regional semifinals tomorrow, Wednesday, February 29 at Saddleback College. Coach Smith is in his eighth season at Riverside City. During his time as the Tigers' head coach, Smith has led Riverside City to a state title, three conference titles and a post-season bid each season. Five times he has posted a 20-win season.

He is being honored along with Bishop Lacy Sykes, Jr, Chief Pastor of Cross Word, Thelma Tynes Davis, Banning Chief of Police Louis Davidson, community leader Eunice Lisberg and McKays Mortuary. Riverside Mayor Ronald Loveridge will be presented the Medal of Justice Award. A reception will be held at 2:30 pm with the program beginning at 3 pm in the Copenhagen Room at CBU. RIVERSIDE RETURNS THE FAVOR; EDGES #3 SEED MT. SAN JACINTO, 79-76, IN OVERTIME ON THE ROAD

SAN JACINTO -- Avenging their overtime playoff loss at home last season, the #19 seed Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers -- on the brink of elimination for the first 35 minutes of the game -- rallied from a 14-point deficit with 14 minutes left in regulation and pulled out a 79-76 overtime win over the host No. 3 seeded Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) Eagles in a Southern California Regional Playoff second-round game.

Trailing, 49-35, with 14:04 left, Riverside pulled into a 70-70 tie with 2.1 seconds left in regulation time when freshman point guard Mason Biddle (Riverside / Arlington HS) converted all three free throw attempts to send the game into overtime.

In the five-minute extra session, RCC (16-10) took its first lead of the game at 75-73 when sophomore forward Jacob Straley (Riverside Poly HS) knocked down a three-pointer with 2:59 left.

The win avenged last season's regional playoff loss at RCC's temporary home, California Baptist University, when MSJC prevailed, 71-70, also in overtime.

The Tigers had four players in double figures, led by freshman guard Bernard Ireland (Eisenhower HS)
with 17 points, Biddle with 16 and Straley with 14. Sophomore guard Solomon Singer (Santa Monica) chipped in with 11 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, 15 defensive, and a game-high seven assists.

MSJ, which finished its season with a 23-6 overall record, was led by sophomore guard Anthony Dees (Los Angeles) with 20 points and a team-high ten rebounds. Sophomore forward Josh Gouch (Columbus, OH) had 16 markers.

With the win, Riverside leaps to play the No. 6-seeded Saddleback College Gauchos (20-8) at Mission Viejo on Leap Day, Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS PLAY-IN GAME, TAKES ON MT. SAN JACINTO

Riverside City men's basketball team won its Southern California Play-in game, earning a spot in the 16-team field. The Tigers overcame Los Angeles Harbor's zone to post a 67-55 victory over the Seahawks in Wilmington. Riverside, the third-place team from the Orange Empire Conference, will travel to Mt. San Jacinto on Saturday, February 25 for a 7 pm game against the Eagles. Mt. San jacinto, co-champions of the Foothill Conference, are the No. 3 seeded team in the 16-team field.

Against Los Angeles Harbor (18-10), Riverside struggled from the field in the first half, making just 8 of 33 shots and 2 of 15 from beyond the three-point line. Fortunately, the Seahawks weren't much better, shooting 29 percent from the floor on 5 of 17 shooting and committing 14 turnovers. The Tigers (15-10) eventually managed to pull out to a 24-19 halftime lead.

In the second half, Riverside got on track, making 10 of 22 field goals, but more importantly managed to outscore Los Angeles Harbor, 22 to 14 at the free throw line. After attempting just 10 free throws in the first half, the Tigers were awarded 29 in the final 29 minutes, making 22. The Seahawks, whose struggles continued from the floor (11 of 31), made 14 of 17 free throws.

With 7:44 remaining, Riverside had built its biggest lead of the night at 45-31. Los Angeles Harbor managed to get within seven at 58-51 with 1:19 left, but the Tigers were able to hold off the Seahawks. Riverside, who had eight of its nine players score, had four players finish with 10 points. Los Angeles Harbor's Dennis Hardwell, who came off the bench, led all scorers with 14 points.

MEN'S BASKETBALL TO TAKE ON LA HARBOR

Riverside City men's basketball team will travel to Wilmington to take on Los Angeles Harbor in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs. The Tigers, who are the No. 19 seed, finished the regular season 14-10 and in third place in the Orange Empire Conference. Los Angeles Harbor (18-9), the No. 14 seed, finished second in the South Coast-South Division. Game time is 7 pm.

MEN'S BASKETBALL HAS THREE HONORED BY THE CONFERENCE

Riverside City had three basketball players honored by the Orange Empire Conference. The Tigers, who finished third in this year's conference race, had freshman guard Mason Biddle (Arlington HS/Riverside, CA) and sophomore guard Corey Walker (Santa Monica/Inglewood, CA) selected to the first team. Sophomore Soloman Singer (Santa Monica/Santa Monica, CA) was selected to the honorable mention team.

Saddleback's Josh Smith and Darnell Taylor were selected as the Orange Empire Conference Players of the Year after leading the Gauchos to the conference title. Gaucho head coach Andy Ground was selected as the conference coach of the year after guiding Saddleback to a 10-2 conference record and the conference title.

MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS SHORT IN BATTLE FOR CONFERENCE TITLE

Riverside City men's basketball team fell short in its bid to claim a share of the Orange Empire Conference Championship as Saddleback scored a 66-50 victory over the visiting Tigers. With the loss, Riverside, the two-time defending conference champions, will slip to third place, Saddleback will claim this year's conference title, its first in three years, with Irvine Valley finishing second after its win over Fullerton. Despite the loss, Riverside figures to be an at-large selection for the regional playoffs, which start Wednesday with four play-in games. The Tigers (14-10, 8-4) could possible play in one of those play-in games.

Riverside struggled throughout the game. In the first half, Riverside was 6 of 20 from the field, missing both thee-point attempts. Saddleback (19-8, 10-2) turned the Tigers' struggles into a 23-16 halftime lead. It didn't get any better in the second half as the Gauchos outscored Riverside, 43-34. Riverside made just 12 of 31 shots in the final 20 minutes.

The Tigers' starting five scored just 16 of the team's 50 points, as two starters failed to score. Bernard Ireland led Riverside with 15 points and Maurice Johns added 10 in 19 minutes of action. Saddleback was led by Darnell Taylor, who led all scorers, with 20 points. The Gauchos also enjoyed a 16-rebound advantage as they out rebounded the Tigers, 42 to 26. Saddleback scored 17 second-chance points.

WHEELOCK GYM IN FINAL STAGE OF ITS SEISMIC RETROFIT

Riverside City's Wheelock Gym, which has been closed for nearly two years for remodeling, is in the final month of construction. According to Tilden-Coil officials, the gym should be completed by the middle of next month. The seismic retrofit project totals $22,639,735 ($9,165,000 coming from the state and Measure C pitching in $13,474,735). The remodeled gym will feature a new basketball floor, seat-back seating at mid-court, heating and air conditioning, new coaches' offices and a state-of-the-art fitness room as well as two kinesiology class rooms.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PULLS WITHIN A GAME OF FIRST PLACE

Riverside City men's basketball pulled within a game of first place with one game remaining after beating Orange Coast, 68-52, in an Orange Empire Conference game at California Baptist University. The Tigers (14-9, 8-3) travel to Mission Viejo on Friday at 7:30 pm for a showdown with Saddleback for the conference title. Riverside, which is the two-time defending state champions, lost the first meeting between these two schools.

In the win over Orange Coast, Riverside built a 44-24 lead with 14:38 remaining after opening a 29-20 halftime lead. The Tigers led from start to finish after scoring 17 of the first 21 points of the game. Riverside got 17 points from sophomore Corey Walker and 14 from Maurice Johns. Solomon Singer grabbed 15 rebounds for the Tigers. Orange Coast (9-19, 3-8) was led by Darnell Banks who scored 10 points off the bench.

MEN'S BASKETBALL RALLIES, BUT COMES UP SHORT

Riverside City men's basketball team rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit, but came up short as Irvine Valley edged the Tigers, 54-50, in an key Orange Empire Conference game at Californai Baptist University. The loss drops Riverside (13-9, 7-3) into a two-way tie with the Lasers (20-6, 7-3) for second place with two games remaining in the regular season. Riverside, the two-time defending champions, and Irvine Valley are now a game and half behind Saddleback in the race for the conference title.

Irvine Valley, which led 28-26 at halftime, went on a 19-2 run, taking a 47-28 lead with 11:34 remaining. However, Riverside countered, pulling within two at 52-50 with 13 seconds remaining on a Mason Biddle lay-up. Cypress, however, got a Michael Bolden dunk with nine seconds left to seal the victory.

Irvine Valley's Ramon Mejia led all scorers with 18 points. Riverside was led by Biddle who finished with 12. Riverside closes out the season next week with a home game against Orange Coast (8:30 pm tip-off) and then a road game in Mission Viejo against Saddleback (7:30 pm tip-off).

MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUTS SANTA ANA, 83-46

Riverside City men's basketball team found their offensive attack, scoring 43 second-half points, in a 83-46 rout of Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference game at California Baptist University. The victory keeps Riverside, the two-time defending Orange Empire Conference Champions, on the heels of Saddleback, which maintained its one-game lead with a win over Fullerton. Riverside will meet an Irvine Valley on Friday at 8:30 pm at CBU in a key conference game. The Lasers come into the game a game and a half behind the Tigers at 6-3.

In the win over Santa Ana (8-15, 2-8), Riverside led from start finishing, jumping out to a leads of 5-0, 12-2 and eventually a 38-14 lead with 2:28 remaining. The Tigers (13-8, 7-2) eventually settled for a 21-point halftime lead at 40-19. Riverside continued to pour in on in the final 20 minutes, building a 35-point lead at 75-40 with 2:39 remaining in the game.

Riverside had three players score in double figures, led by guard Mason Biddle who finished with 20 points. He also had seven assists and four rebounds. Teammates Bernard Ireland and Corey Walker added 11 and 10, respectively. Santa Ana was led by Kashif Williams who finished with 20 points.


MEN'S BASKETBALL KEEPS CONFERENCE TITLE HOPES ALIVE

Riverside City men's basketball team kept its Orange Empire Conference title hopes alive with a 67-53 victory over host Fullerton. While the win kept Riverside (6-2, 12-8) in the hunt to win a third-consecutive conference title, the loss eliminated Fullerton (5-3, 8-14) from post-season play.

Riverside got 21 points from Mason Biddle and Corey Walker added 20 in pacing the Tigers to the win. The Tigers opened a 35-26 halftime lead and steadily pulled away in the second half, at one point opening a 16-point lead with 2:05 remaining. Fullerton, who got 23 points from Gregory Bewernick, held an eight-point lead with 13 minutes left in the first half, but the Hornets couldn't maintain its lead.

Riverside will continue its hunt for the conference title next Wednesday when the Tigers host Santa Ana in an 8:30 pm game at California Baptist University. Santa Ana upset the Tigers in their first meeting.

RIVERSIDE OUTLASTS CYPRESS, 69-64

Needing a victory to remain a game behind Saddleback in the race for the Orange Empire Conference title, Riverside held off a stubborn Cypress squad, 69-64, tonight at California Baptist University. The Tigers continue their conference schedule next Wednesday when they travel to Fullerton to take a re-energized Hornet squad. Fullerton downed Orange Coast and now find themselves in third-place and making a run a possible post-season bid. Saddleback posted a 25-point victory over Santa Ana to remain a game ahead of the Tigers, the two-time defending conference champions.

For Cypress (8-14, 1-6), it was another frustrating loss. The Chargers continued to give its opposition fits, but can't come away with a win. The Chargers were down 61-60 with 3:10 remaining, but couldn't keep Riverside off the boards. The Tigers finished with 18 offensive rebounds. Riverside finished the game with 23 second-chance points.

Riverside continued to show balanced scoring as four players finished in double figures, led by Solomon Singer and Bernard Ireland who scored 13 points apiece. Mason Biddle added 11 with Keenan Brande chipping in 10. Cypress got 18 points from Chris Maheras.

SADDLEBACK TAKES CONFERENCE LEAD WITH 74-65 WIN

Saddleback men's basketball team took a one-game lead over Riverside in the race for the Orange Empire Conference title after the Gauchos scored a 74-65 victory over the Tigers at California Baptist University. The victory broke a deadlock at the top of the conference standings between Saddleback and Riverside. When the second round of conference plays begin on Friday the Tigers, who are the two-time defending conference champions, will be sitting a game behind the Gauchos.

Trailing 31-30 after the first 20 minutes, Saddleback used an 18-1 run to take a 55-37 lead with 9:32 remaining. Riverside (4-2, 10-8) went nearly eight minutes between baskets as the Gauchos (14-7, 5-1) built a 20-point lead at one point. Riverside rallied down the final five minutes, but ran out of time. The Tigers got within six at 7-64 with 29 seconds left, but couldn't pull off the comeback.

The game took nearly two hours to complete as the two teams were whistled for 54 hours with two Saddleback technicals. Riverside finished the game shooting 39 percent from the floor. In the second half, the Tigers managed just 9 makes and finished 19 of 49 from the floor. Riverside was also 6 of 20 from the three-point lead. Saddleback, which shot 60 percent from the floor, committed 25 turnovers, 16 in the first half.

Saddleback's Josh Smith led all scorers with 19 points. Teammate Miles Green added 17 and Darnell Taylor chipped in 16. Riverside was led by Mason Biddle who finished with 16 points. Ten of his points came from the free throw line. Bernard Ireland added 13, with Jacob Straley coming off the bench to add 12.

Riverside, which is playing its home games this season at California Baptist University, hosts Cypress on Friday at 8:30 pm.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUTS ORANGE COAST

BASKETBALL MEN (1/20/2012)


Riverside men's basketball team got 17 points from Corey Walker and 14 points from Keenan Braden as the Tigers routed Orange Coast, 73-56, in an Orange Empire Conference game in Costa Mesa. The victory moves Riverside into a tie for first place and sets up a showdown next Wednesday at 6:30 pm at California Baptist University with Saddleback, which also comes into the game with a 4-1 conference record.

Against Orange Coast, Riverside shot 48 percent from the floor, making 15 field goals in the first half when the Tigers (4-1, 10-7) took a 38-20 halftime lead. The Pirates (1-4, 6-15) struggled from the opening tip-off. Orange Coast was 9 of 35 from the floor in the first 20 minutes and made just 1 of 13 three-pointers in first half. The Pirates picked it up in the second half, but never could recover from its first 20-minutes of play. Orange Coast's Will Ligon came off the bench to score 21 points, but the Pirates didn't have any other player score 5 points or more.

MEN'S BASKETBALL STUNS NO. 14 IRVINE VALLEY

Riverside men's basketball team held Irvine Valley to 19 first-half points as the Tigers stunned No. 14 Lasers, 62-59, in an Orange Empire Conference game in Irvine. Riverside (9-7, 3-1) held Irvine Valley (15-5, 2-2) to just six first-half field goals (24 percent from the floor) and one three-pointer (percent). The Tigers used the advantage to build a 20-point halftime lead, 39-19. The tables, however, were turned in the second half as Riverside struggled from the floor, making just 7 of 17 shots and 2 of 6 three-pointers. Irvine Valley recovered from its first-half woes, making 15 of 32 shots and 6 of 13 three-pointers. However, Irvine Valley ran out of time as Kalob Hatcher missed a three-pointer at the buzzer after a Corey Walker turnover with three seconds remaining in the game.

Riverside got 13 points from Jacob Straley off the bench. Walker added 10 points and 6 rebounds, but committed four turnovers. Irvine Valley was led by Hatcher, who led all scorers with 16 points. Austin Loeb came off the bench for the Lasers to chip in 12 points. The Tigers continue its road trip on Friday with a game at Orange Coast at 5:30 pm.

SANTA ANA STOPS RIVERSIDE IN OVERTIME

BASKETBALL MEN (1/13/2012)


The Santa Ana men's basketball team handed Riverside its first Orange Empire Conference loss of the season, 71-70, in overtime.

The win stopped a six-game losing streak to the Tigers. It was also just the Dons' second win over the Tigers in their last 18 games between the two teams.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with the Tigers (8-7, 2-1) holding the early lead at 9-6 before the Dons (8-9, 2-2) came back to establish a 18-12 lead halfway through the first half. The Dons continued to lead until the 2:14 mark when a pair of Solomon Singer free throws gave the Tigers a 27-26 lead. Kashif Williams hit a free throw moments later to tie the game at 2727 before Kacy Barlow hit a pair of jumpers around a Tigers three-pointer to give the Dons a 31-30 lead.

Mason Biddle ended the half for Riverside with a jumper that gave the Tigers a 32-31 lead at the break. Biddle was one of four Tigers with five points in the half, while Ashton Coleman led the Dons with eight points.

In the second half, the two teams played each other close with the largest lead of the half belonging to the Dons at 64-58 with 1:30 left. Riverside scored the final six points of regulation to force overtime. The Dons opened overtime with a three-pointer by Barlow to go up 67-64 before a pair of Kevin Ramirez free throws gave the Dons a 69-64 lead. Riverside answered with a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 69-68 with just over one minute remaining. After a pair of Ramirez free throws gave the Dons a 71-68 lead, Keenan Braden hit a lay-up for Riverside as time expired, giving the Dons the 71-70 win.

Barlow and Ramirez led the Dons with 16 points apiece followed by Coleman with 12. For Riverside, Biddle led the way with 15 points with Braden adding 13 and Corey Walker 11.

MEN'S BASKETBALL OUTLASTS FULLERTON, 58-50

Riverside mens' basketball team had three players score in double figures, led by Mason Biddle with 16, as the Tigers scored a 58-50 victory over the Hornets in an Orange Empire Conference game at California Baptist University. Riverside, which improved to 2-0 in conference and 8-6 overall, plays its next three games on the road, including next Friday game at Santa Ana. The Tigers have a bye on Wednesday.

Leading by two points at halftime, Fullerton (1-1, 4-12) managed to tie the game at 39-39, but an 8-0 run by the Tigers, four points coming on free throws by Biddle, Riverside was able to regain control of the game and pulled away. With 2:51 remaining the Tigers had built it largest lead of the night at 56-45.

Freshman Keenan Braden, who came off the bench, helped Riverside's cause with 15 points (and a game-high 12 rebounds), while sophomore guard Corey Walker added 11 points. Fullerton was led by Chris Nelson who came of the bench to score 18 points.

BIDDLE, BERNARD PACE RIVERSIDE TO WIN OVER CYPRESS

BASKETBALL MEN (1/4/2012)


Riverside men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 74-62 victory over Cypress in both team's Orange Empire Conference opener in Cypress. The Tigers, who host Fullerton on Friday at California Baptist University at 6:30 pm, got 17 points apiece from Mason Biddle and Bernard Ireland. Keenan Braden added 13 for Riverside, which improved to 7-6 overall.

Riverside dominated the first 20 minutes of the game. The Tigers shot over 60 percent from the floor in the first half, opening at one-point a 20-plus lead at 48-27. Cypress (7-9) rallied in the second half. The Chargers hit back-to-back three pointers to get within seven points at 53-46, but Bddle responded seven consecutive points to return the Tigers' lead to double digits which they maintained down the stretch.

MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO VENTURA, 92-67

BASKETBALL MEN (12/18/2011)


Riverside fell to Ventura, 92-67, in the third-place game of the College of the Sequoias Tournament. The game was dominated by the Pirates from the opening tip-off. The game also served as Riverside's final preseason game. The Tigers, who will open Orange Empire Conference play with a 6-6 record, travels to Cypress on January 4 for a 5:30 pm game.

Allan Hancock outscored Riverside by 17 points at the free throw line in the second half as the Tigers fell to Allan Hancock, 69-57, in a championship semifinal game at the College of the Sequoias Tournament. Riverside will play for third place on Sunday, December 18 at 2 pm against Ventura College. Riverside, which shot just three free throws in the second half, held a 30-25 halftime lead, but the Bulldogs wiped it out as they made 20 of 28 second-half free throws. Riverside sophomore Stephan Shepard led Riverside with 13 points.

MEN'S BASKETBALL SNAPS TWO-GAME LOSING STREAK

BASKETBALL MEN (12/16/2011)


Riverside men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak thanks to a 77-62 victory over Modesto in the first round of the Sequoias Tournament. The Tigers, who led the entire game, had four players score in double figures, led by Stephan Shepard who scored 17 points and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds. Teammate Corey Walker also had 17 points, behind three, three-pointers. Solomon Singer added 13 and Reggie Kindle chipped in 12.

Riverside advances to the championship semifinals at 7 pm on Saturday, December 17 where the Tigers will meet Allan Hancock. The Bulldogs upended host College of the Sequoias.

RIVERSIDE ELIMINATED FROM SADDLEBACK TOURNAMENT

BASKETBALL MEN (12/9/2011)


Riverside was eliminated from the Saddleback Tournament after falling to Antelope Valley, 66-46, in a consolation semifinal game. The Tigers continue to struggle offensively. Riverside (5-4) shot just 29 percent from the floor in the first half (8 of 27) and made one of seven three-pointers as Antelope Valley took a 29-17 halftime lead. Although, Riverside turned it around in the second half it was nearly enough as the Marauders outscored Riverside, 37-29, in the final 20 minutes of the game. Antelope Valley was bolstered by its bench, which scored 38 of its 66 points. Joshua Blaylock came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points for Antelope Valley, whose only loss this year was to No. 1 Citrus. Riverside, which is off until December 16 when it competes in the Sequoias Tournament, was led by Mason Biddle who managed 11 points, the only Tiger to score in double figures.

RIVERSIDE FALLS IN FIRST ROUND OF SADDLEBACK TOURNEY

BASKETBALL MEN (12/8/2011)


Mt. San Antonio had all five starters score in double figures as the Mounties scored an 81-75 victory over Riverside in the first round of the Saddleback Tournament. The Mounties (8-2) advance to the championship semifinals where they will face the state's No. 1 ranked team in Citrus, which defeated Antelope Valley, 83-73. The Tigers (5-3) will try to remain in the tournament at 1 pm when they take on Antelope Valley in a consolation semifinal.

In the loss to Mt. San Antonio, the Tigers held a 72-70 lead with 4:59 remaining, but the Mounties outscored Riverside 11-3 down the stretch to advance. In the game, Riverside trailed by as much as 11 points and 10 at halftime (46-36). Mt. San Antonio, which was led by Darnell Martin with 17 points, shot 53 percent from the floor in the first half. The Mounties finished the game 28 of 56 from the floor and 8 of 13 from the three-point line. Riverside, which had four players score in double figures, struggled in the second half - making 15 of 39 shots and 2 of 11 three-pointers. Bernard Ireland led the Tigers with 15 points.


RIVERSIDE HOLDS OFF MIRAMAR, 57-53

BASKETBALL MEN (11/22/2011)


Riverside's Stephen Shephard scored six key points down the stretch as the Tigers held off Miramar, 57-53, in a non-conference game in San Diego. Riverside (5-2) held a sizable lead halftime, 30-21, but Miramar slowly chipped away at it getting within two points. That's when Shephard put the game away.

Riverside, which will compete in the Saddleback Tournament on December 8th, was led in scoring by Mason Biddle who had 15 points. Corey Walker added nine.

MEN'S BASKETBALL CAPTURES THIRD AT SBVC TOURNEY

BASKETBALL MEN (11/20/2011)


Shannon Fowler scored 18 points and Dominque Lanier added 14 as Riverside captured third place at the San Bernardino valley Tournament with a 73-57 victory over Compton. Lanier scored 11 of his point in the first half as the Tigers (4-2) opened a four-point halftime lead at 35-31. Riverside extended their lead in the second half as the Tartars struggled from the floor, shooting 33 percent from the floor (10 of 30). The Tigers also used an advantage at the free throw line as Riverside made 11 of 13 free throws in the final 20 minutes.

Riverside will take on Miramar on Tuesday at 5 pm before breaking for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO MT. SAN ANTONIO

BASKETBALL MEN (11/19/2011)


Despite having four players score in double figures, Riverside fell to Mt. San Antonio in the championship semifinals of the San Bernardino Valley Tournament. The Tigers will face El Camino Compton Center in the third-place game at 4 pm on Sunday.

Riverside (3-2) had three starter score in double figures, led by Bernard Ireland, who had 18 points. Shannon Fowler added 12 points (and 15 rebounds) while Mason Biddle chipped in 10 points to go with 7 assists. Dominque Lanier came off the bench to score 11 points. Mt. San Antonio (3-2) had three players manage double figures, led by Garret Nevels, who came off the bench to pour in 18 points to lead all scorers. The Mounties built a 39-32 halftime lead, behind 50 percent shooting from the floor (14 of 28) and 5 of 9 shooting from beyond the three-point line. Riverside struggled to get back into the game in the second half. The Tigers shot just 36 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes (11 of 30) and made 2 of 9 three pointers in the half.

BIG SECOND HALF SENDS TIGERS TO VICTORY

BASKETBALL MEN (11/18/2011)


Clinging to a two-point lead at halftime, Riverside outscored Pasadena City 48-39 in the second half en-route to a 75-64 victory in the first round of the San Bernardino Valley Tournament. The Tigers will take on Mt. San Antonio at 4 pm in one of the championship semifinals games. The Mounties scored a 102-79 victory over Victor Valley earlier in the day.

Against Pasadena, Riverside outscored Pasadena (1-3) by 11 at the first throw line. The Tigers (3-1) made 20 of 26 free throws, while the Lancers were 9 of 14 from the line. Riverside had three players score in double figures. Bernard Ireland led Riverside with 17 points, while Keenan Braden and Mason Biddle added 15 and 13, respectively. Pasadena's Kameron Burch led all scorers with 25 points.

MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP

BASKETBALL MEN (11/12/2011)


Riverside men's basketball opened the 2011 season by winning the Consolation Championship at the San Jose City College Tip-off Tournament. The Tigers fell to Foothill in the opening round, 57-53, but recovered to beat Merced, 78-60, in the consolation semifinals and then downed Merritt, 86-71, in the consolation finals. Foothill would eventually fall into the championship game to Hartnell, 70-56.

Riverside's Bernard Ireland was selected to the all-tournament team after averaging 21 points per game over the weekend. He had 9 pts vs. Foothill in the first game, 29 pts. vs. Merced, and 24 pts. in the consolation championship game vs. Merritt. Shannon Fowler was another bright spot for the Tigers, averaging 11 rebounds per game over the three-game tournament.

The Tigers, who will play their non-conference schedule on the road due to the continued construction on Wheelock Gym, play in the San San Bernardino Valley Tournament, beginning on Friday, November 18. Riverside will open the eight-team tournament against Pasadena City at 6 pm.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND VIEWPOINTS LAUNCHES TIGER TV

The Riverside athletic department, in conjunction with Viewpionts, the District's on-campus newspaper, has launched Tiger TV.

James Martinez, Matt Dziak and Javier Cabrera, editor in chief of Viewpoints, will cover Tiger athletics from the sidelines to the locker room, giving Tiger fans an inside look at the week's happenings.

There will be post-game interviews as well as a weekly wrap up and highlights from all 19 athletic teams during the 2011-12 season.

"We're excited about Tiger TV," said Athletic Director Barry Meier. "It will be another way for us to keep the community involved in the 19 athletic programs and the student-athletes who work so hard - in the classroom and on the field.

"Viewpoints is a top-notch college newspapers and (associate professor of Journalism) Allan Lovelace does a tremendous job working with his students to put them in a position to pull off a project like this. In the end, this is a win-win, a win for our student-athletes and win for the students wanting a career in broadcast journalism."

Community Education Football Offense/Defense Class

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Football Fundamentals (KIN-A60/A61 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course provides the student an opportunity to learn general and specific individual defensive and offensive football fundamental techniques and strategies, emphasizing active participation in the game of football. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 3. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the football practice field. Students should come in proper football attire, which includes shorts and cleats. Cost is $36, please bring exact change. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Tom Craft.

Community Education Out of Season (Basketball) Conditioning Class

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Out of Season Basketball Conditioning Class (KIN-A95 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course applies advanced conditioning and weight training principles for an out-of-season training program for varsity sport competition. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 17. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm in Wheelock Gym, on Monday through Friday with the end date being June 7. Students should come in proper attire, which includes gym shoes. Cost is $36, please bring exact change in you plan on registering in person. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Joshua Thomas.
