Riverside had its 10-game win streak snapped as Irvine Valley scored a 68-65 victory over the Tigers in an Orange Empire Conference game in Irvine. The victory puts the Lasers (6-2, 21-3) back in the race for the conference title with three games remaining.

How good of a steal did UC Riverside get in signing sophomore forward Kevin Bradshaw? Just ask Orange Coast. Bradshaw scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 27 minutes of play as Riverside dominated Orange Coast, 83-59, in an Orange Empire Conference game in Wheelock Gym.
Bradshaw was 10 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 9 from the free throw line and pretty much unstoppable as the Tigers improved to 7-0 in conference and 19-4 overall.

Riverside took a 30-24 halftime lead after the Gauchos were held to 28 percent shooting (6 of 21) and missed both three-point attempts. Saddleback managed to stay in the game by making 12 of 17 free throws in the first half. The second half, both teams struggled from the floor. Riverside was 9 of 23, while Saddleback was 10 of 30 - with five of their makes being three pointers.
The Tigers, who have a bye in Wednesday's round of conference play, had three players score in double figures led by UC Riverside recruit Kevin Bradshaw, who had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Teammates Daniel Redmon and Davie Champagnie each added 10 points. Saddleback's Perry Webster led the Gauchos with 14, while teammate Robert Curtis chipped in 12.
Riverside returns home on Friday for the start of the second round. The Tigers host Orange Coast in a 7:30 p.m. game at Wheelock Gym. |

The victory keeps Riverside undefeated in conference play headed into its showdown with Saddleback on Monday (Jan. 25) at 5:30 p.m. in Mission Viejo. The Riverside-Saddleback game had to be moved from last weekend after the Gaucho Gym sprung some links for the heavy rains.
Both teams come into the game Monday sporting undefeated conference records.
In the win over Cypress, Riverside opened a 15-point halftime leadm 38-23, and cruised from there as the Tigers had three players score in double figures, led by sophomore Kevin Bradshaw who had 23 points. Sophomore Daniel Redmon added 20. Donovan Buford chipped in 16.

RIVERSIDE SWATS HORNETS, 82-47 BASKETBALL MEN (1/15/2010) |
Riverside had 11 players score, three in double figures, as the Tigers mauled Fullerton, 82-47, in an Orange Empire Conference game at Wheelock Gym.
The win keeps Riverside undefeated in conference play at 3-0 and 16-4 overall. Meanwhile, Fullerton falls to 1-2 and 9-11 overall. The victory sets up a showdown with Saddleback next Wednesday in Mission Viejo as two contenders for the conference title collide. The Tigers, the defending state champions, have won six straight.
In the win over Fullerton, Riverside put the game away early as the Tigers opened a 40-21 lead with 2:24 remaining in the first half. The Hornets never recovered. Riverside's defense gave Fullerton nothing but fits. The Hornets turned the ball over 26 times, 17 times in the first half. When the Hornets managed to get a shot off, they weren't very accurate. Fullerton shot 29 percent from the floor and 25 percent from the three-point line. In the second half, Fullerton managed just six made free throws.
Riverside got 13 points from Willie Trimble, 12 from Donovan Buford and 11 from Valentine Ike as every player saw playing time. Fullerton didn't have a player score in double figures. |

REDMON MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN BASKETBALL MEN (1/13/2010) |
Riverside sophomore guard Daniel Redmon, who has missed the last six games with an ankle injury, made his much anticipated return and he didn't disappoint as he scored a game-high 27 points in a 71-66 victory over Irvine Valley in an Orange Empire Conference game at Wheelock Gym.
Redmon, who suffered the injury in the Tigers' third game of the Wells Fargo Holiday Tournament, started and played 35 minutes. He finished 8 of 14 from the floor, 3 of 4 from the three-point line and made 8 of 10 free throws. He also had two assists and two steals. Redmon, who has signed with Northern Arizona University, committed three turnovers. Teammate Kevin Bradshaw, who is headed to UC Riverside next year, added 19 points, 7 rebounds, five on the offensive end, and 3 blocks.
Irvine Valley (0-2, 15-3)countered with 17 points from Travis Fulton and 15 from Travis Ballard. Andrew Arnold came off the bench to chip in 11.
At one point, the Lasers were the top ranked team in the state, but since earning that ranking they've lost two of three. With the exception of a couple five-minute stretches, Irvine Valley showed they could hang with Riverside, the defending state champions and the favorite in the race for the conference title. The Lasers used a 16-4 run to take a 31-21 lead with 6:04 remaining, but Riverside went on its own run, taking a 40-38 halftime lead.
In the second half, Riverside appeared to be pulling away for the win when the Tigers (3-0, 15-4) opened its biggest lead at 63-54. However, Irvine Valley managed to creep with one at 67-66 with 1:21 remaining. Questionable shot selection, however, proved costly as the Lasers were held scoreless in the final minute.
Riverside returns to action on Friday when the Tigers host Fullerton in a 5:30 p.m. game at Wheelock Gym. Irvine Valley will host Santa Ana, also at 5:30 p.m. |

FORMER TIGER COACH BILL MULLIGAN PASSES BASKETBALL MEN (1/12/2010) |
Former Riverside Community College men's basketball coach Bill Mulligan passed away today (Tuesday, Jan. 12) at the age of 79. Coach Mulligan was a month short of his 80th birthday. He had been in failing health for the last five years.
In addition to coaching at Riverside, coach Mulligan coached at Saddleback College and UC Irvine, with former Tiger coach and close friend Bob Schermerhorn, and came out of retirement to start the program at Irvine Valley College in 1992.
"We lost a great person and coach today," said Schermerhorn, a close friend.
Coach Mulligan coached the Tigers for nine seasons (1966-1975), compiling a record of 167-87 before becoming the head coach of the Saddleback Gauchos. He replaced Jerry Tarkanian as the Tiger coach.

RIVERSIDE WINS 10TH HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT TITLE BASKETBALL MEN (12/12/2009) |
Riverside, the defending state champions, claimed its tenth Wells Fargo Holiday Tournament as the Tigers downed College of the Sequoias, 57-43. The appearance in the championship game was Riverside's 23rd all-time. The Tigers have now won 10 of their 23 appearances.
Riverside played without Northern Arizona bound guard Daniel Redmon. Redmon, who was MVP of the Antelope Valley Tournament last week, suffered an ankle injury in Friday's win over Mt. San Antonio. What was thought to be a broken ankle is a severely sprained ankle, which will cause the sophomore to miss next week's game at Oxnard and the Imperial Valley Tournament after Christmas.
With Redmon out of the line-up, sophomore James Calhoun, who was named to the all-tournament team, started in place of Redmon. He responded with 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 points and 7 rebounds. Tournament MVP led the Tigers (10-2) with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 rebounds. Jordan Richard came off the bench to chip in 15 points and 10 rebounds and Donovan Buford added 11 points.
Sequoias (9-4), who had played some of the best basketball in the tournament, struggled with its shooting touch - especially in the second half. The Giants shot 23 percent from the floor in the game and just 14.8 percent in the second half. At one point, Sequoias scored just two points over the course of 8 minutes and 44 seconds. In the first 3:55 of the second half, the Giants scored nine points, but managed just another nine over the course of the final 16 minutes.
Kenny McGowan, who was named to the all-tournament team, led Sequoias with 13 points. Teammate Rob Walters also earned all-tournament honors after capping his week with 7 points and 6 rebounds in the final game.
There will not be a tournament in 2010 as the District shutters Wheelock Gym for a remodel and expansion. The project, which is scheduled to begin this summer, is expected to be complete in 17 months.
