RECAP OF DAY 1 OF THE CCCAA SWIM & DIVE CHAMPIONSHIPS, ANTONISSEN WINS 50 FREE

SWIMMING AND DIVING MEN (4/26/2012)


STATE MEET, DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS

A national and state record was set in the 500-yard freestyle by Santa Monica's Ahmed Mathlouthi in a time of 4:18.90.

WOMEN--Defending state champion Orange Coast takes the first day lead with 144 team points while Orange Empire Conference rival Golden West is right behind the Pirates in second at 133. Diablo Valley is third with 128. Riverside is fourth (83) and Santa Rosa and Ventura are tied for fifth (73).

MEN-North region Santa Rosa holds the Day 1 lead with 213 points, holding a large margin over second place Palomar (129). Third place is a current tie between Santa Monica and Ventura (both with 94 points). Grossmont is in fifth with 83. Defending state champ Orange Coast is sixth with 78.

DAY 1, 2012 STATE EVENT CHAMPIONS
Event 1-Women's 200-yard Freestyle Relay
Golden West (Gabriela Cabrera, Saibrah White, Brooke Roy, Margaret Dix), 1:37.52.
The Rustlers edged out second place and fellow Orange Empire Conference foe Orange Coast by .18 of a second.

Event 2-Men's 200-yard Freestyle Relay
Santa Rosa (Trent Williams, John Bing, Sean Malley, Nolan Stimple) 1:22.55
The Bear Cubs defended their state record win of a year ago, but finished .35 off that 2011 mark with a 1:22.55 winning time. Palomar placed second at 1:23.60.

Event 3-Women's 500-yard Freestyle
Jade Morton, Golden West, 4:57.32
Morton, a sophomore, shaved off eight seconds from her state fastest seed time to comfortably win the 500 in a margin of more than nine seconds faster than second-place finisher Katherine Gabayeron of Cerritos.

Event 4-Men's 500-yard Freestyle
Ahmed Mathlouthi, Santa Monica, 4:18.90
***Santa Monica freshman Ahmed Mathlouthi shatters a state record with a phenomenal swim in the 500. His time of 4:18.90 broke the national record and a 3-year old state meet record by an amazing 4.62 seconds (previous state mark Riki Yano, Orange Coast, 4:23.52). It is the second straight year that a SMC swimmer broke a state meet record. Old national NJCAA mark-4.22.17-Mateo De Angulo (Indian River State College, 2009). It is the fifth state meet record broken in two years at the East LA Swim Stadium.

Event 5-Women's 100-yard Individual Medley
Alexandria Holland, Santa Rosa, 57.99
Holland, a freshman, came oh so close to the state record, missing out by just .08 seconds
in a win over second-place Michelle Liu (58.67) of Santa Monica.

Event 6-Men's 200-yard Individual Medley
Jeff Lum, Santa Monica, 1:49.43
Lum became a back-to-back state champion in an event that he set the state record only a year ago at the same East LA pool. Lum's time was 1.49 seconds slower than his freshman winning time, but nearly a full four seconds faster than his nearest competitor. It was the Corsairs second win of the day.

Event 7-Women's 50-yard Freestyle
Andrea Antonissen, Riverside, 23.62
Antonissen soared to a win over Orange Coast's Mackenzie Bailie (23.89) in the 50 sprint after setting the top time in the prelims at 23.57. Her prelim time was just .34 off the state record.

Event 8-Men's 50-yard Freestyle
Henry Chung, Ventura, 20.00
The freshman Chung broke his own school record in winning the 50 sprint with one of the fastest state meet times ever. His mark of 20 seconds even was .32 behind the state record of 19.68 set by Joey Hale in 2009 for Golden West.

Event 9-Women's 400-yard Medley Relay
Diablo Valley (Courtney Leonard, Shaila Yoder, Hannah Voegtly, Taylor Henry) 3:58.35
After falling behind early, Diablo Valley picked up speed and never looked back in taking the medley relay race and beating the 4-minute mark. DVC defeated second place Ventura by 2.88 seconds.

Event 10-Men's 400-yard Medley Relay
Santa Rosa (Sean Malley, Curtis Tinloy, Trent Williams, Nolan Stimple) 3:23.44
SRJC wins its second relay race of the day to fuel its top team standing after Day 1 of the state meet.

Event 11-Women's 1-meter Diving
Kristen Brimage, Cuesta, 216 points

Event 12-Men's 3-meter Diving
Nicolas Suissa, Santa Rosa, 262.40 points
The Bear Cubs went 1-2 in the event with Michael Kurrels finishing behind Suissa (238.20).

The CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will hold prelims each morning at 9:30 a.m. and the finals in the evenings at 5 p.m. (4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 only).

MEN'S SWIM SECOND AT CONFERENCE FINALS

SWIMMING AND DIVING MEN (4/21/2012)


Riverside City men's swim team finished second at the Orange Empire Conference swim championship event. The Tigers finished the three-day meet with 681.5 points. Orange Coast, the two-time defending state champions, won the conference title after amassing 856.5 points. Golden West was third with 496 points, followed by Cypress (471), Saddleback (403) and Fullerton (281).

Head Coach Doug Finfrock saw three college records broken and another tied, but the Tigers managed to win just two events at the conference meet. Sophomore James Inglett became a conference champion after edging Orange Coast's Ian McPherson in the 100 free. Inglett, a graduate of North High School, shaved over two seconds off his previous best time as he finished in a time of 46.70, tying the school record. He was .09 seconds faster than McPherson. Inglett also broke the school record in the 50 free at 21.38, good for second place as he finished .02 behind Orange Coast's Conrad Trzeciecki.

Riverside driver James Mauldin was the only other participant to win an event as he took home the gold in the 1-meter diving event. Mauldin, a graduate of Vista Murrieta High School, won the event with a combined score of 272.30, beating back Cypress' Frank Grey who finished with 245.5 points.

Riverside set a school record in 800 free relay as Luke Obert (Patriot HS), Morgan Dillon (Fontana), William Koenig (Redlands East Valley) and Inglett teamed up to nearly break the seven-minute barrier with a time of 7:00.22. The time, while a school record, was only good enough for second place as Golden West team finished under seven minutes at 6:58.81. Overall, Dillon had a strong meet. In addition to helping the 800 relay to school record and a second-place finish, he took second in tree other events - 500 freestyle (4:50.80), 400 IM (4:12.50) and the 1650 freestyle (16:34.43). In another relay event, the team of William Koenig (Redlands East Valley HS), Jeffrey Morelos (Bloomington), Branko Fernandez (Riverside Poly) and Inglett tied the school record in the 200 free with a 1:25.29 finish.

In the 100 butterfly, Obert broke a 36-year-old school record with his 51.47 finish. His time netted him a fourth-place finish in the event.

Riverside will compete in the state swim championship meet on Saturday, April 28. The meet is being held at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, CA. The following athletes have qualified for the state finals:

MAULDIN QUALIFIES FOR REGIONAL SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Riverside City's Terrell Mauldin qualified for the CCCAA Regional Swim Championships in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive next month after winning the 1-meter dive competition and then finishing third in the 3-meter at the Orange Empire Conference Dive Championships. Mauldin, a freshman from Vista Murrieta, won the 1-meter competition with 272 points, and will enter the regional competition as the region's No. 1-ranked diver. In the 3-meter competition he accumulated 212 points, 35 points behind the overall winner, Frank Grey of Cypress. Josh Arno of Cypress finished second and also advanced to the state finals.

RELAYS SHINE FOR MEN'S SWIM IN MEET WITH PALOMAR

Riverside City men's swim team hosted Palomar in non-scoring, non-conference meet at the Riverside City Aquatic Center, and while the Tigers had a few swimmers turn in season-best times only one individual event produced a new seasonal-best mark. Alan Madrid managed a 2:08.66 in the 200 butterfly, bettering teammates Luke Obert's previous best mark of 2:09.31. Two relays also turned seasonal-best marks. In the 200 free (James Inglett, William Koenig, Jeffrey Morelos and Luke Obert) teamed up to swim a 1:27.82 and in the 200 medley relay, Matthew Hopf, Inglett, Morelos and Obert shaved nearly 2 1/2 seconds off the previous best mark with a 1:41.48.

Riverside returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when the College hosts the Orange Empire Conference Championship meet.

MEN'S SWIMMING WINS OEC DUAL MEET CHAMPIONSHIP

Riverside City men's swim team captured the Orange Empire Conference Dual Meet Championship after posting wins over Saddleback (159-59) and Fullerton (167-57) at the Riverside City Aquatic Center. The Tigers, who will host Palomar on Friday, April 6, will host the conference swim championships on April 21.

Three swimmers captured their events while also posting season-best times. James Inglett won the 100 yard free in a time of 48.86. The time bettered the previous best mark by .09 and is only the second sub-49 seconds mark in the event this season. Luke Obert won the 200 yard breast, and in doing so became the first Tiger swimmer to break the 2:20 mark. His time of 2:15.52 was nearly five seconds faster then the previous best time by a Tiger (Matthew Hopf at 2:20.14). Morgan Dillon won the 500 yard freestyle in a time of 5:02.76, shaving nearly five seconds off his previous best time in the event.

MAULDIN SWEEPS THE DIVING COMPETITION AT CHAFFEY INVITATIONAL

Riverside City freshamn James Mauldin won the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions at Chaffey Invitational as the Tigers placed third overall with 685.5 points. Grossmont won the invitational with 840 points, followed by Palomar which earned 795 points. Mauldin, a freshman from Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, CA, amassed 210.85 points in the 3-meter competition and 192.05 points in the 1-meter.

Luke Obert (Patriot/Riverside, CA) was the Tigers' only other individual winner as she swam a 1:59.40 in the 200-yard individual medley. His time was a season-best for the freshman, who also posted seasonal-best times in the in the 400-yard individual medley (3rd/4:19.91) and 100-yard backstroke (6th/56.16) and the 100-yard free (6th/48.97). He also helped four relay teams to top 10 finishes and their best times of the season - 200-yard medley relay (5th/1:43.76), 400-yard free (3rd/3:15.71), 400-yard medley relay (6th/3:48.32) and 800-yard free relay (3rd/7:28.84).

Riverside, which will be off this week, returns to action on Friday, March 23 when the Tigers host Saddleback and Fullerton in a 2 pm Orange Empire Conference meet at the Riverside City Aquatic Center.

MEN'S SWIM UPSETS ORANGE COAST, 4-TIME STATE CHAMPS

Riverside City men's swim team upset Orange Coast, the four-time defending state champions and four-time Orange Empire Conference Champions today. The Tigers outscored Orange Coast, 111-106, in the Orange Empire Conference meet at the Riverside City Aquatic Stadium.

Riverside's Luke Obert won two events, claiming the 200 yard IM and the 200 backstroke. In the 200 IM, he became the first swimmer this season to break the 2-minute barrier with a time of 1:59.55. In the 200 back, Obert swam a blistering 2:04.59, shaving seven seconds off the Tigers' previous best time. Meanwhile, Riverside also got victories from James Inglett in the 200 yard free and Jeffrey Moreles in the 50 free. Inglett finished in 1:50.65, giving him his best mark of the season. Meanwhile, Moreles also set the team's best mark in the 50 free as he finished in a time of 22.42.

OBERT SHINES AT GOLDEN WEST INVITATIONAL

SWIMMING AND DIVING MEN (2/25/2012)


Riverside City freshman Luke Obert won two events, finished second in a third and helped the 400 free relay team to a second-place finish last weekend at the Golden West Invitational. Obert, a graduate of Patriot High School in Riverside, CA, broke the meet record in the 100 butterfly with a 53.24 clocking. He also shined in the 200 individual medley as he broke the invitational record in his preliminary swim at 2:01.05 and then came back in the finals, swimming 2:01.24, good for first place.

After finishing second in the 50 butterfly (24.11), he took to the pool and helped the Tigers to a second-place showing in the 400 free relay. Three of the swimmers, William Koenig, Branko Fernandez, Obert, all swam thier legs in under 51 seconds, but Luke Obert, on the final leg, finished at 48.66 as the Tigers finished three seconds out of first place and five seconds faster than third-place Golden West.

Riverside will host Orange Coast in an Orange Empire Conference meet on Friday, March 2 at 1 pm at the Riverside City Aquatic Stadium.

MEN'S SWIMMING SWIMS TO A THIRD-PLACE FINISH AT WATERMAN FESTIVAL

Riverside men's swim team, backed by a first-place finish from freshman Luke Obert (Patriot/Riverside, CA) in the 100 fly, finished third at the Waterman Festival this past weekend. The Tigers, who finished with 540 points, finished behind overall winner, Palomar (733 points) and Grossmont (598). Riverside beat out Cerritos (351), San Diego Mesa (283), Chaffey (256) and Fullerton (211).

In the 100 backstroke, Riverside got a seventh-place finish from Matthew Hopf (Canyon Springs/Moreno Valley, CA), while Kyle Lee (North/Riverside, CA) came through with an 11th-place showing in the 100 breaststroke. Hopf covered the course in a time of 1:02.81, while Lee was 1:10.60. In the 50 yard free, Riverside advanced two swimmers to the finals. William Koenig (East Valley/Redlands, CA) placed third in a time of 22.75, while James Inglett (North/Riverside, CA) was fourth at 22.81. Branko Fernandez (Poly/Riverside, CA) wan the B Final in a time of 23.32. In addition to winning the 100 fly, Obert was fourth in the 400 IM, finishing in a time of 4:28.44. Riverside had three swimmers finish in the top 10 in the 1000 free, led by Morgan Dillon (Fontana/Fontana, CA) who finished in a time of 10:58.34, good for fifth place.

In relay events, Riverside was best showing was in the 350 free and 400 free where the Tigers placed third. In the 350, Riverside swam a 3:09.86, 9 seconds slower than Palomar and in the 400 free, the Tigers were 3:28.08, 10 seconds off the pace set by Palomar.

Riverside will host Golden West and Cypress in an Orange Empire Conference meet on Friday, February 10 at noon at the Riverside City College Aquatics Center.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND VIEWPOINTS LAUNCHES TIGER TV

The Riverside athletic department, in conjunction with Viewpionts, the District's on-campus newspaper, has launched Tiger TV.

James Martinez, Matt Dziak and Javier Cabrera, editor in chief of Viewpoints, will cover Tiger athletics from the sidelines to the locker room, giving Tiger fans an inside look at the week's happenings.

There will be post-game interviews as well as a weekly wrap up and highlights from all 19 athletic teams during the 2011-12 season.

"We're excited about Tiger TV," said Athletic Director Barry Meier. "It will be another way for us to keep the community involved in the 19 athletic programs and the student-athletes who work so hard - in the classroom and on the field.

"Viewpoints is a top-notch college newspapers and (associate professor of Journalism) Allan Lovelace does a tremendous job working with his students to put them in a position to pull off a project like this. In the end, this is a win-win, a win for our student-athletes and win for the students wanting a career in broadcast journalism."

Community Education Football Offense/Defense Class

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Football Fundamentals (KIN-A60/A61 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course provides the student an opportunity to learn general and specific individual defensive and offensive football fundamental techniques and strategies, emphasizing active participation in the game of football. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 3. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the football practice field. Students should come in proper football attire, which includes shorts and cleats. Cost is $36, please bring exact change. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Tom Craft.

Community Education Out of Season (Basketball) Conditioning Class

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Out of Season Basketball Conditioning Class (KIN-A95 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). The course applies advanced conditioning and weight training principles for an out-of-season training program for varsity sport competition. The community education class is open to all students. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, April 17. The Community Education class will take place from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm in Wheelock Gym, on Monday through Friday with the end date being June 7. Students should come in proper attire, which includes gym shoes. Cost is $36, please bring exact change in you plan on registering in person. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Joshua Thomas.

Community Education Women's Summer Soccer Class

Riverside City's Kinesiology Department will be offering a spring Community Education class for Men's Soccer (KIN-A64 in the spring schedule or the college catalogue). This course is designed to introduce students to the rules, basic skills, and offensive/defensive strategy in soccer Emphasis will be placed on improving individual skills and applying these skills to game situations Subsequent enrollment in additional semesters will
provide the student an opportunity for added skill competency
development. Participants can sign-up on the Community Education website or in person the first day of class, which is Tuesday, July 3. The Community Education class will take place from 8 am to 10 am at the Norco College Soccer Stadium and meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (ending date is August 14, will be no class on Wednesday, July 4). Students should come in proper attire, which includes soccer cleats. Cost is $36, please bring exact change in you plan on registering in person. This is a noncredit class. Instructor is Lynsey Jalayer.
