VOLLEYBALL CONCLUDES SEASON WITH A VICTORY

VOLLEYBALL WOMEN (11/16/2011)

Riverside women's volleyball team ended the 2011 season with a straight-set victory over Santa Ana. The final game scores were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-16.

The first game opened with neither team taking control of the game. As the two teams played up to a 12-12 there were 11 ties with the biggest belonging to Riverside (12-13, 5-9) at 8-6. The Tigers broke the 12-12 tie with four-straight points to establish the largest lead of the game at 16-12. The Dons (1-19, 0-14) then answered with three-straight points to cut the Tigers lead to 16-15. Riverside answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 10-10 before the teams traded ties to 12-12. The Dons then established leads at 15-13 and 16-14 before Riverside scored five straight points to take a 19-16 lead. Arroyo snapped that run with a kill to pull the Dons within two at 19-17 before Riverside pulled out to a 24-17 lead. The Dons scored back-to-back points but their rally fell short as the Tigers won the game 25-19.

After the Dons battled back from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the third game 4-4, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-4 lead. The Dons answered with five of the next six points to claim their first lead of the game at 9-8. Riverside came back to tie the game at 10-10 before jumping out to a 16-12 lead. VOLLEYBALL SNAPS THREE-MATCH LOSING STREAK

VOLLEYBALL WOMEN (11/4/2011)

It was the battle for sixth place in the conference standings and, although Saddleback had its sights set on revenge for an earlier loss to the Tigers in Riverside, it wouldnnâ€t happen tonight.

Riverside jumped out quickly and raced to a 25-15 victory in the first set. Saddleback bounced back to even the match with a 25-19 victory in the second set, leading the whole way. The third set was tied at 11 and then again at 15-all before Saddleback edged out to a 21-19 lead. Riverside, however, tied the set at 21-21 and went on to win 25-23.

It appeared that Saddleback would take the fourth set as the Gauchos jumped out to an early 15-11 lead. But Riverside would win 14 of the next 18 points to win the set 25-19 and take the match, 3-1.

VOLLEYBALL SLIPS FURTHER OUT OF PLAYOFF CONTENTION

VOLLEYBALL WOMEN (10/28/2011)

Riverside slipped further out of playoff contention after falling to Orange Coast, 25-12, 25-21, 25-22 in an Orange Empire Conference match in Costa Mesa. The Tigers are now 2-7 in conference (9-11 overall) and sit in sixth place with five matches remaining. Traditionally the conference, due to its strength, sends five teams to the regional playoffs. Cypress currently sits in fifth place, three games in from of the Tigers, who host fourth-place Fullerton on Wednesday at 6 pm in Huntley Gym. Riverside''s schedule still includes matches against seventh place Saddleback on the road, Cypress at home and road matches against Irvine Valley (third place) and last place Santa Ana.

In the loss to second-place Orange Coast, Riverside struggled in getting the offensive attach started. The Tigers registered just 21 kills over the course of the three games. Breeana Mayes, a sophomore out of Patriot High School, led the Tigers with six kills.
