Riverside snapped a three-match losing streak with an action-packed 27-30, 30-16, 27-30, 30-27, 15-12 victory over Saddleback in an Orange Empire Conference match.
There were some long rallies and hard-fought points as the two teams battled it out at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano.
With Saddleback's gym getting a new floor this month after water damaged the old floor in August, the Gauchos have been vagabonds looking for a place to stay and play. Against a closely matched Riverside team, the Gauchos opened the match with a narrow 30-27 victory before the Tigers found a go-to girl in Markeshia Richie. Richie (26 kills on the night) helped the Tigers cruise to a 30-16 win in game two to knot the match.
Saddleback overcame a 15-11 deficit in game three behind the strong serving of Sarah Martin (Capistrano Valley HS) who served out eight straight points, giving the Gauchos a 19-15 lead and enough momentum to take game three, 30-27.
Riverside repaid the favor in game four after the score was tied at 15-15. The Tigers never again trailed, winning 30-27 to force a fifth game. The Tigers scored four straight points to open up a 9-5 advantage, but Saddleback's Paulina Swiatkowski (Irvine HS) served up six straight points to help the Gauchos gain an 11-9 lead. The teams traded points and the score was knotted at 13-13 until a Saddleback kill attempt sailed wide. Riverside was able to win the match on the next point when Saddleback was unable to cleanly dig out a ball on defense.
In addition to Richie, Brittany Rush had 28 kills for Riverside while Brittany Whitlock (36 digs) and Andrea Valenzuela (35 digs) provided the defense. Saddleback was led by Martin (17 kills, 39 digs) and Hannah McElroy (14 kills) while Megan Ozurovich had 43 digs on defense. |

DISTRICT SETS ASIDE $5 MILLION GENERAL NEWS (9/20/2007) |
On September 11 the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees approved spending $5 million to build a new aquatics complex on the downtown Riverside campus. The expenditure, drawn from Measure C funds, will go toward the construction of a joint-use facility that includes a 65-meter Olympic quality pool that will be home to RCC water polo, swimming, and dive teams.
The planned aquatics complex, with an estimated cost of $14 million, is the result of a partnership between RCCD, the city of Riverside, the county of Riverside, and the RCCD Foundation. Construction is expected to begin by 2009. When completed, the new facility will provide a venue for water fitness education, youth aquatics instruction, and training and competition for RCC teams, local swim organizations such as the Riverside Aquettes, and the community. Popular programs such as the College for Kids swim classes will continue at the new aquatics complex.
In voting to approve the project funding, board member Virginia Blumenthal said, "This is the type of partnership that I love to see. Not only does it provide much needed 'water' for our young athletes who have had to travel outside the region to train and compete, but it brings the community on to the campus and gives people an opportunity to learn more about RCC."
The board's action follows a similar vote by the Riverside City Council in August, which approved the allocation of $3 million for the project and the development of a joint-use agreement between the city and the College District. Riverside County Supervisors John Tavaglione and Bob Buster recently pledged support over the next four years.
Blumenthal's comments were echoed by local businessman Ted Weggeland, who has agreed to chair the RCCD Foundation's effort to raise private support to complete construction and help cover ongoing operations. "RCC is the single best location for an aquatics facility that will benefit both the community and student athletes," Weggeland told the board. "The College has a great tradition of first-rate aquatics programs and of welcoming the community onto its campuses. The youth in our community deserve the very best aquatics facility we can build."
Plans for the aquatics complex include adding to the existing Cutter Pool building and swim and dive pools a 65-meter competition pool, which can be sectioned off to allow simultaneous multiple use. New locker rooms, coaches' offices, and grandstands will also be constructed, said Riverside City College interim president Dr. Linda Lacy. And the possibility of installing a photovoltaic system on the shade cover over the grandstands is being discussed with representatives of Riverside Public Utilities.
"The community recognizes the need for a facility of which we can all be proud," Weggeland said. "I'm confident that individuals and businesses will step forward with the necessary private support to complete what will be one of the premier aquatics complexes in California." |

ATHLETICS LAUNCHES STATE-OF-THE-ART WEBSITE GENERAL NEWS (7/23/2007) |
Riverside Community College District today unveiled its new state-of-the-art athletic website. The website uses the latest technology available in statistical gathering, video presentation and other features which will help promote Tiger student-athletes to four-year programs.
The site also allows the District to reach out to former Tigers by creating an alumni page where former student-athletes can register and keep in touch with one another.
"This was a huge undertaking by our Sports Information Office," said athletic director Barry Meier. "Our goal was not to only service our current student-athletes, but to reach out to our former players. We want this site to be inclusive to all of our players-both present, past and future."
Former players can register through the Alumni section. Meanwhile, future players can contact coaches through Become a Tiger.
"From the beginning our thoughts were centered on helping our student-athletes to move on through timely statistical posting and game stories," said Robert Schmidt, Sports Information Director. "But the further we got into the site, the more we realized how much more potential the site had to offer."
The site will give potential students the ability to find out not only about athletic teams, but athletic programs like the District's Athletic Training Program, the cheer program and physical education classes.
"I still think there are areas that can be enhanced," said Schmidt "and we will be looking at them as we begin the process to bring everything online." |
